From the tiiest child i a Spiderma costume to adults havig fu with their ow geeratio s comic book heroes, they made it a colorful ad ejoyable time for the spectators who lies the streets. Most importatly, the comic book classics were accompaied by may real life hometow heroes, such as service me ad wome both past ad preset, police officers, firefighters, paramedics ad other commuity leaders. Veteras played a large part i the day s festivities. May youth activity groups, such as White Tiger Karate ad Graite State Martial Arts, thaked moms ad dads who made it possible for childre to grow ito heroes through their programs promotig positive behavior. Frakli Visitig Nurses Associatio applauded those i health care, like Super Nurse Gretche, Nurse Kratchit ad her dog, ad all the others who work to keep residets healthy, happy ad at home. The Tilto Seior Ceter also saluted Seiors Helpig Seiors as the oldest group of heroes i the commuity, proclaimig them all to be Super Heroes for the Day. LOCAL NEWS HALL MEMORIAL LIBRARY WINNISQUAM ECHO Saborto Public Library kicks off summer readig program with some exotic visitors BY DONNA RHODES Drhodes@salmopress.com SANBORNTON This year s statewide summer readig program is Fizz, Boom, Read, but i Saborto the program was kicked off with a few oohs, ahhs, ad eeks whe Wildlife Ecouters brought a variety of Aimal Athletes to visit with the boys ad girls at their public library. Wildlife Educator Krista Butts greeted early 80 childre ad adults last Wedesday with aimals that have uique capabilities to survive i the moist raiforests of South America, the arid eviromet of the Sahara Dessert ad eve right here i the Uited States. The Sugar Glider from Australia was a popular creature that had may childre clamorig for a closer look at the adorable octural aimal. Butts coaxed the tiy tree-dwellig marsupial from a pouch ad told the group about all of its atural habits. Sugar Gliders are related to the flyig squirrel, see alog lake frots i New Hampshire, but either of the two actually fly. They have a flap of ski uder their legs that they use to glide dowward to aother brach, but they ca t fly upward. They re great climbers, though, ad they keep to the trees so they do t become prey to aother aimal, she explaied. Ad, as cute as they are, Butts said, they will bite first ad ask questios later. They re used to beig prey, so they react first to protect themselves, she said. The Red-Eyed Tree Frog was aother amazig creature ad childre leared that its ability to leap log distaces ad the suctio cups o their feet make them a great athlete, too. He ca clig to both the top or the bottom of a leaf to hide from his predators, said Butts. Reptilia visitors from South America were Ki the Commo Red Tail Boa Costrictor ad Louise, a Gree Iguaa. Boa Costrictors have icredibly strog muscles that squeeze their prey to death. They ca the disted their jaws to eat creatures more tha three times the size of their ow heads. We keep our boa costrictors well fed, though, so there s o worry today, Butts said with a smile as five-foot log Ki wrapped aroud her waist ad shoulders. Besides beig great climbers, the most iterestig feature of the Gree Iguaa, she poited out, is their capability to discoect their tail should they be grabbed by their mai predator, the eagle. If a eagle grabs them by the tail, a iguaa will wait util they re over water, the let go of their tail ad belly flop ito the water. That way, they wo t get hurt too badly whe they lad, Butts explaied. The tail, she reassured the group, would grow back but it would t have the same protective coloratio of the origial tail. Other iterestig visitors were Nibbles, a Patagoia Cavy (or Mara), ad Irwi the baby alligator. Kow as Olympic-class ruers i the aimal world, cavy s use their athletic abilities to protect them from predators. Cavy s also have large eyes o each side of their head ad Butts gave the childre a easy rhyme to help recogize which aimals are predators ad which aimals are potetial prey. Eyes o the side, they like to hide. Eyes i the frot, they like to hut, she said. Childre also leared some of the differeces betwee the America alligator ad a crocodile whe Butts brought Irwi out to meet them. O Jue 9, Northfield Police received a warrat to eter a bar at Southwick Farm where horses belogig to the two idividuals were kept. After state officials from the Departmet of Agriculture deemed the coditios uacceptable, all aimals iside the bar were seized ad tured over to Live ad Let Live Farm Rescue i Chichester. Belmot picked up a 5-1 wi over Gilford i the decisive game three at Odell Park to advace to this weeked s state touramet. I caot say eough about this group, said Belmot maager Brett Sottak. We lost two heartbreakers (i the touramet), ad both times istead of hagig their heads ad feelig bad for themselves, they wet out ad played better ad got the job doe every time they had to. Gilford erased a 10-3 lead i this oe, scored seve rus i the top of the fifth to tie the game at Carmilia drove i the game-wiig rus i the sixth whe he took a high fastball over the left field fece for a two-ru homer, drivig i Alex Muthersbaugh (walk) for a lead.
