The departmet s ew ladder truck was the perfect settig for a repellig demostratio by Firefighter Jo Powell, ad iside the statio, people were able to tour other apparatus. The fire prevetio trailer was set up for the public, there were fire extiguisher demostratios ad the law was covered with a harmless soapy foam for childre to play i, too. The departmet has t held a ope house for a while. This week was Fire Prevetio Week, so we thought it would be a good way to raise awareess of the beefits of fire prevetio ad show what we ca do to help people, said Chief Michael Sitar. Touramet of Champios draws a variety of aglers BY ERIN PLUMMER eplummer@salmopress.com Aglers gathered from across New Eglad from all ages ad backgrouds for Norther Bass Supply s Touramet of Champios. The two-day touramet lauched from Silver Sads Maria, ad aglers fished i Wiipesaukee aroud the area. Participats were the previous wiers from other competitios alog the Norther Bass trail. Boats first lauched o Saturday morig for a day of fishig that started up agai Suday morig. Aroud 3 p.m. o both days, boats retured to Silver Sads Maria with their catches. All fish were to remai alive to qualify, weighted ad stored i special bags ad taks before beig throw back. The evet wrapped up o Suday with a fial awards ceremoy. The grad prize was a fully equipped 2015 Z117 Rager bass boat worth 23,000. Participats could also take home 40,000 i prizes. The evet also icludes categories for husbad ad wife, disabled veteras, ad youth ad adult teams. Sady Oja, ower of Norther Bass Supply, said the weather ad water coditios were great o Saturday. O Suday however the water was locked i fog i the morig, the aglers had to deal with rough chop ad colder weather throughout the day. Roughly 300 differet aglers ad aroud 162 boat etries took part i the touramet. Oja said the touramet is a uique oe. We re probably oe of the oly outside touramet trails that Rager doated a boat to because it is a uique [touramet], Oja said. It s uique because it s family orieted. Oja also listed the differet categories of aglers who take part i the touramet. The grad prizewier was the team of Josh Lae of Litchfield ad Bob Savoie of Shirley, Mass., who caught pouds of fish. They also wo for largest luker smallmouth ad largemouth bass respectively, wiig a additioal 500 for each of them. Lae said the two have bee doig the trail for over a decade. We love it; we worked hard to get it, Lae said. Lae said they had a big day o their first day, takig the lead that they maaged to keep throughout the weeked. This is the third week i a row the pair have wo touramets; Lae said this week s wi makes this a trifecta. The two said they will sell the prize boat, as both of them have their ow boats. Lae ad Savoie said they ejoy takig part i Oja s touramets. It s the biggest trail i the coutry, ad it s the best trail, Lae said. We certaily ejoy fishig this lake; I ve fished it for 30 years, Savoie said. Savoie said they always eat at George s Dier i Meredith whe they are i the area. Mike Guilbault of Attleboro, Mass. ad Mike Goodspeed of Dedham, Mass., were the team represetig the New Eglad Paralyzed Vetera s of America. The team came out o top at the NEPVA touramet at Camp Robidel i Moultoborough i September ad made it to the Touramet of Champios. Guilbault is a Air Force vetera ad the Assistat Sports Director of the NEPVA. This was his first time i Touramet of Champios. Goodspeed is the boat s captai with Guilbault ridig aboard ad fishig. Guilbault said Oja has bee a great sposor ad a great supporter of the NEPVA. This tourey was quite a eye-opeig experiece, Guilbault said. He said overall, they did well durig the touramet despite some rough coditios o Suday. It was a lot of fu, ad the people were really good helpig us out, Goodspeed said. We had a great time fishig. Both said they make a great team. He s a lot of fu out there, Goodspeed said. The etry fee ad lodgig expeses for the PVA team was covered by Norther Bass Supply. Tiy LaFotaie, touramet director for the NEPVA touramet, said his orgaizatio has had a great relatioship with Norther Bass. He said Oja has bee a great supporter for more tha 15 years. Rya ad Josh Roy of Fitzwilliam were oe father-so team i the Adult/Youth Divisio. Josh has bee fishig sice he was three-yearsold, ow he is 13 ad came out to his secod Touramet of Champios with his dad. The two fish together o a regular basis ad are ivolved i Moadock Bassmasters. The Roy s boat eded up breakig dow o Suday, Rya Roy said someoe did come out ad help them. There s still good people out there, Rya Roy said. Josh said he was happy with his catch, which icluded two smallmouth bass. Fishig together has bee a log traditio for the Roy family. Rya first wet out with Josh s older brother, the Rya ad Josh started goig out. I love it; it s fu, Josh said, Rya Roy said he loves comig out fishig with the kids. You lear a lot, Rya said. He takes care (of me) as much as I take care of him. Terry ad Lucas Baksay were aother father-so team, comig up to Gilford from Easto, Co. Lucas has bee fishig sice he was aroud 5, ow he is also 13. Both said they hade a good weeked. It was good, it was fu, Lucas Baksay said. I thought that it was great, said Terry Baksay. Perfect weather; what else could you wat? Terry Baksay said his so has bee learig so much about fishig. He s a very good fisherma; he s leared more ad more as we go, Terry Baksay said. Pey Teey said they have fished i may touramets Oja had bee ivolved with. The two have a good system whe they go out: Pey rus the trollig motor while Kevi takes the back of the boat. We work good together, we do a lot together, Kevi Teey said. We hut together, we work together. They caught eight fish o Saturday; despite some hard times gettig a bite; they also caught eight o Suday. Pey ad Kevi said they ejoy the compay of other people at the touramet. Hassa s omiees to the Site Evaluatio Committee, the regulatory body that reviews ad approves eergy projects i the state of New Hampshire. This is a issue that is ear ad dear to my heart sice I was the prime sposor of the legislatio (SB245) that made reforms to the Site Evaluatio Committee. As backgroud to SB245, the Legislature previously passed SB99 (for which I was also the prime sposor). That legislatio required the Office of Eergy & Plaig to coduct a public stakeholder process relative to the Site Evaluatio Committee. Over the course of may moths, members of the public participated i this process it was a real grassroots effort. Throughout the meetigs, a strog ad recurret theme was evidet; the public did ot trust the curret site evaluatio process, they felt that the public was ot beig represeted ad that their views were t valued or cosidered. But by workig together, local citizes idetified issues of cocer, examied possible solutios, ad outlied areas of agreemet. I kow some of my costituets were skeptical of the process ad doubtful that ay meaigful chage would occur. I implored them to believe we were makig progress ad that their opiios were valued. The fial report of SB99 served as the framework to help the Legislature idetify reforms to improve the curret sitig process ad from that process, SB245 was bor. Seate Bill 245 was a act relative to the procedures ad authority of the Site Evaluatio Committee. The legislatio sought to restructure the size ad makeup of the Site Evaluatio Committee, stregthe public participatio (pre-applicatio, public iformatio sessios), provide adequate fudig ad staff capacity (applicatio fees, moitorig/decommissioig, operatios i additio to permits), ad esure projects provide a et commuity beefit (evirometal, commuity, ecoomic). At the very heart of SB245 was the commitmet to ivolve the public, to ear back their trust by makig them part of the sitig process. I February 2014, I testified i the Seate Eergy & Natural Resources Committee, advocatig for a stroger role i the decisio-makig process by the public. I told the Committee that public appoitmets to supplemet the SEC membership would provide additioal ad importat perspectives o projects ad their value to the state ad the commuities where they would be sited. The week did get off to a good start agaist Frakli, as the Red Raiders shook off a first set loss to pick up a much-eeded 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, wi o Oct. 6. This was huge, said BHS head coach Melissa Mier. We made chages i our offese throughout ad we fially saw the hard work pay off. Adreya Murphy led the offese, which totaled 36 kills o the day, with 10 kills, while sophomores Shao Davies (eight kills) ad Lidsey Huckis (five kills) also chipped i. Seior Louisa Bergero tossed i five aces ad two kills for Belmot. Thigs did't go quite as well agaist the Cougars, as Belmot dropped a 25-15, 25-10, decisio to the top-seeded side o Friday ight. We struggled i our passig game which made it extremely difficult for the setters, said Mier. Belmot fiished with just four kills i the loss, the team's lowest total of the seaso.
