As she displayed the may service pis eared throughout her ursig career, she was joied by her husbad Dick Howe ad NHVH Commadat Peggy Labrecque. Logtime Nursig Director says goodbye to Veteras Home BY DONNA RHODES Drhodes@salmopress.com TILTON For more tha 25 years, Saborto residet Ae Howe has bee a dedicated member of the staff at New Hampshire Veteras Home, but o Moday she stepped away from her logtime role as ursig director, also kow as Director of Residet Services, to start a ew chapter i her life. I m ot just walkig away, though, she said. I ll be here o a limited basis to keep my ursig licese active, but I ll have the flexibility to take care of my gradchildre, go hikig, skiig ad to travel. I m goig to voluteer here, too. That s really importat to me. Howe, who lives i Saborto, said that arrivig for work each day at NHVH has bee like walkig ito a aother special commuity of which she was a member, ad that is somethig she ca t give up. They have a really great missio statemet here, to take care of the residets, ad comig from a family of veteras, that meas a lot to me, she said. It s their home, ad we wat them to be comfortable ad cared for here. Amog those veteras is her mother-i-law, Okie Howe of Saborto, who curretly resides at SEE VETERAB, PAGE A11 BY DONNA RHODES Drhodes@salmopress.com TILTON Studets of the Wiisquam Players at Wiisquam Regioal High School will be brigig the classic Broadway ad film musical Grease to life this Friday ad Saturday i the first sprig musical productio the school s drama club has preseted i a few years. Director Aliso O Brie said she selected Grease for a couple of reasos. Sice they had t doe a musical i a few years, I was lookig for somethig fu that the whole commuity could get behid, she said. But there s also a whole lot of really great talet at Wiisquam, ad I wated to fid somethig that would showcase as much of that talet as I could. I December, O Brie assembled early 40 studets who were eager to take part i the productio, from actig to costumes, props, or eve helpig with the soud ad set desigs. They ve worked really hard. I like seeig studets get ivolved i all aspects of a play like this. If they go o to theater i college, they ll have a good backgroud i everythig goes ito a productio, said O Brie. Grease is cetered o a group of teeagers from workig class families i the 1950 s who came to be kow as greasers. Fast cars ad fast times become their way of life. The storylie follows the advetures of these sometimes troubled studets from the fictioal Rydell High School. It addresses issues such as friedships, gags, tee pregacy ad other importat topics i a musical fashio that helps brig light to the ever-edig trials ad tribulatios of tee-aged years i ay decade. Playig the lead female role of Sady Dumbrowski, the slightly aïve ew girl at Rydell High, is WRHS juior Olivia Martiso. Bad boy Day Zuko, who is captivated by Sady, will be portrayed by juior Daiel Kehr. The show starts right off with a big dace scee with the cast. It s bee woderful to see the kids come together, workig as a esemble ad eve helpig each other out as they build o their performaces, said O Brie. While the story is based i the 1950 s, the musical is filled with timeless sogs, lively dace ad a lot of high eergy fu for people of ay age, whether they SEE GREASE, PAGE A11 Committee uveils plas to Celebrate Saborto BY DONNA RHODES Drhodes@salmopress.com SANBORNTON Plas have bee i the works sice early last fall for a ew style of commuity togetheress i Saborto, ad those ivolved would like to reach out for other voluteers, ideas, ad eve a few cakes. Whe Saborto s Old Home Day was cacelled last summer due to a lack of participatio, a committee quickly formed to develop a more casual but fu fall evet that they are callig ow Celebrate Saborto. The oly requiremet is that each cake, however decorated, will eed to iclude a letter that will be assiged to them oce 19 bakers are oboard. We wat to lie the cakes up, each with a letter that will spell out Celebrate Saborto. We just thought it would be somethig differet ad fu to do, said Wells. I ay celebratio for the Tow of Saborto, its rural heritage could ot be igored ad Wells assures everyoe there will be plety of horse shoeig ad black smithery, a wood miser, spiig demostratios ad hopefully other skilled crafts to observe ad lear about. If ayoe has a talet they would like to come out ad demostrate that day, we d love to hear from them. There will be plety of room, she said. 4 Opiio A4 Thursday, WINNISQUAM ECHO FROM THE CAPITAL STEPS BY SEN. JEANIE FORRESTER District 2 Last Thursday was cross over i the Seate, which meas all Seate bills must be voted o ad set over to the House of Represetatives. Likewise, i the House all House bills must cross over to the Seate. There were early 60 bills that we eeded to vote o from as easy as a bill o child restrait practices, to as thought-provokig as the gas tax. It was a iterestig ad surprisig day for me. Sice my first term i office, I have bee workig to improve the Site Evaluatio Committee (the committee that approves eergy projects i New Hampshire). SB245, which would be voted o that day, was my secod attempt to pass legislatio to address deficiecies i the SEC process. The fial bill provides eeded improvemets to RSA 162-H, which govers the Site Evaluatio Committee. SB245 icludes four importat aspects: -Requires the SEC to make a fidig that each ew eergy facility proposed is i the public iterest as a coditio of approval; -Requires two publicly appoited members to serve o the SEC ad reduces the size of the SEC from 15 to 7 state agecy heads; -Makes the SEC process more user friedly to the public by restructurig the public iformatio ad public hearig schedule to allow more time for the public to acquire iformatio about the project ad to prepare ad submit commets; -Provides staff ad fiacial resources for the SEC to do its work. Eve though this bill was the result of a tremedous collaborative effort amog may stakeholders ad we had reached cosesus o the laguage, I was skeptical of its success ad I was expectig a floor fight (i.e., vigorous debate!). Ca you make progress toward your ear-term ad log-term objectives at the same time? Yes, you ca but you ll eed to match your shortad log-term goals with the appropriate savigs ad ivestmet vehicles. For example, oe of your most importat short-term goals may be purchasig a house, so you ll eed to accumulate a certai amout of moey by a certai time perhaps i three to five years. Therefore, you wo t wat to risk your dow paymet o a ivestmet whose price will fluctuate ad whose value may be dow just whe you eed the moey. Cosequetly, you may wat to look for a shorter-term ivestmet whose objective is preservatio of pricipal. Typically, to explai them. Next, a board member tried to excuse a same-old/ same-old teacher cotract by hitig at a merit or assessmet-based cotract i the future. Do that ad you ll be up for Nobel Prizes i both ecoomics ad peace. I do t kow what s worse: the board member believig his ow words or the board thikig they were pullig the wool over the eyes of ayoe remotely kowledgeable of school board/teacher uio symbiosis. But the big draw this year was America s favorite pastime. No, ot baseball, or eve football (though football was at the heart of the discussio). This was all about our real pastime: gettig what we wat by spedig other people s moey. So a program fouded o a lie was fially brought ito the budget (as we all kew it would). Sports may teach life lessos, but the lastig lesso for studets attedig Saturday s meetig was with these types of vehicles, the shorter the term, the lower the iterest rate but sice your goal is basically to have a certai amout of moey available at a certai time, you might be less iterested i what retur you ll get o this particular ivestmet, as opposed to the retur you might hope for from other, loger-term vehicles. I fact, while you are savig for your dow paymet o your home, or for other short-term goals, you also eed to be thikig log term that is, you eed to save as much as you ca for your evetual retiremet. Sice you are still i the early stages of your workig life, you have a eormous asset goig for you: time. By startig to save for retiremet ow, you have more time to save tha you would if you waited aother decade or so. Plus, sice you have so may years to go util you retire, you ca afford to put a reasoable percetage of your ivestmet dollars ito growth-orieted istrumets, such as stocks or stock-based ivestmets. They may carry that workig hard to ear somethig you wat is for suckers. It s easier to simply assemble a workig majority (just 170 i this case) ad vote to sped other people s moey. Never mid that the board had t eve bothered to project 10 year costs for the program they recommeded. No oe really cares about data whe spedig somebody else s moey. Predictios: uder curret leadership, i five years district spedig will have rise faster tha iflatio despite stable or decliig studet erollmet. These plas usually offer a variety of ivestmet optios, icludig several growth-orieted accouts. 15 WINNISQUAM ECHO Got (chocolate) milk? Readig the Wall Street Joural last week as I ofte do, obviously I came across a fasciatig story that had to do with March Madess. It focused o the Uiversity of Michiga basketball team...their true secret to success this year. After a gruelig schedule throughout a log regular seaso that led to a Big Te Coferece champioship, the WSJ wated to kow to which factors the Wolveries owed their success. Turs out, it was somethig we ca all get behid. Michiga players drik chocolate milk. Here s what the Joural discovered: The me s ad wome s basketball teams guzzle five gallos of chocolate milk every week, said Michiga me s basketball stregth coach Jo Saderso, who keeps a stailess-steel dispeser of chocolate milk i the weight room. Saderso already had bee supplyig athletes with chocolate milk for a few years whe the school struck a deal this seaso with the Uited Dairy Idustry of Advetures i Sports Reportig By JEFF LAJOIE Michiga: The trade group provides stipeds for chocolate milk, ad Michiga posts promotioal sigage at its basketball area. Who does t like chocolate milk? Saderso said. So may awesome thigs about that paragraph. First of all, five gallos of chocolate milk souds like heave! But i fairess, beig split amogst the teams makes it a little less impressive. Also, if all it takes to get free milk is some sigage, maybe I should let the Uited Dairy Idustry kow that my loyalty is also for sale. So why chocolate milk? That s a good questio. Yes, it s quite delicious. Ad yes, milk is good for you, etc. But drikig a lot of it to repleish the body? I ll let the article aswer those questios. Michiga s choice of chocolate milk is more scietific tha it souds. A staple of may childhoods, chocolate milk is rich i protei ad carbohydrates, which helps repleish exhausted muscles after workouts, utritioists say. The state s dairy idustry also made similar deals with NCAA touramet teams Michiga State ad Wester Michiga. We absolutely would love to attribute their success to chocolate milk, said Amy Viselli, its maager of utritio outreach. So there you have it, case closed. I m thikig some Lakes Regio basketball programs eed to get o the hor with the local dairy uio ad lock dow a deal for ext witer before it s too late (chocolate milk is already the official drik of the NHIAA). 20 B8 SPORTS WINNISQUAM ECHO BRACKETS CONTINUED FROM PAGE C1 agaist a superior figure? Well, Iter-Lakes sophomore Julia Eifert is right o my heels with 72 poits i secod place, though she took a big blow whe her atioal champioship pick of Arizoa fell to Wiscosi i overtime of the Elite 8. Moultoborough s Kelsey Coppiger eters this weeked i third place with 69 poits, as she had both Florida ad Wiscosi i her Fial Four. But Coppiger is all doe with poits, as she had either team advacig to the champioship game. Iter-Lakes juior Dillo Dow sits i fourth place with 67 poits, ad the sharpshooter gets major props from me for beig oe of the oly people I ve see take Ketucky as a Fial Four pick. Dow has the Wildcats advacig to the title game, though his atioal champioship pick of Kasas may prove to keep him out of the top spot i our fial stadigs. Belmot s Matt Leclair ad Gilford s Cassidy Bartlett are i a tie for fifth place with 66 poits, ad both are still alive with champioship picks of Florida. The duo had the Gators as their loe successful Fial Four pick however, keepig them a bit dow i the stadigs. Wiisquam s Kaylee Howard stads aloe i seveth place eterig this weeked with 57 poits, ad she still has a chace to move ito the top five with Florida as her atioal champ. Gilford s Coby Goodwi (55 poits) ad Moultoborough s Aaro Davis (47 poits) roud out the group. Goodwi had Florida i his Fial Four but does t have them goig ay further, while Davis ca still move up a bit as he has the Gators i his title game. That still does t make up for his champio pick Duke losig i its first game however, a tough blow to ayoe s bracket. With the champioship game takig place o Moday ight, I m ot sure if I will be able to get the fial stadigs i ext week s ewspapers sice our deadlie is earlier i the day o Modays. If there are still poits to be had after the semifial games, the fial totals will likely be i the followig week s papers.
