Southwick was bor o Sept. 25, 1923, ad except for a very brief stit i the Army, lived his etire life at the family farm o Zio Hill Road where he was bor. He ever married, ever eve had a date. He ever took a vacatio, ever ate at a restaurat ad ever held ay other job. Over the years, Southwick raised pigs, horses, chickes ad other livestock. He had hayfields, a large garde ad a maple sugarig operatio, but it was his egg busiess that made him a ico i the commuity. For early 80 years, Southwick ad his horse draw cart made their way alog the streets of Northfield ad Tilto as he delivered as may as 100 doze eggs to his customers each week. I remember him whe I was a kid i Tilto, with his horse ad cart i tow every day sellig goods from his farm, said oe former residet as memories of Bert poured i earlier this week. Eve after he retired his cart ad horse a few years ago, he cotiued his egg deliveries with the help of his farm had Harold, who would drive him alog the route i his truck Southwick s commitmet to his commuity was t limited to his egg deliveries, though. Nearly 20 years ago, Wiisquam Regioal School District cut the ribbo o the Southwick School, built o lad from his family farm. It was the studets themselves who voted to ame the school i his hoor. Southwick had a good relatioship with the boys ad girls at Southwick School, visitig them o occasio ad brigig them corstalks for decoratios each fall. He would also brig i a pile of pumpkis from his garde that he would sell to the third grade studets for just 50-cets or sometimes he would simply give oe to a child who could t afford to buy oe. ISO-NE has repeatedly wared that 8,000 MW (25 percet) of New Eglad s electricity capacity has either retired or is at-risk of retirig. The regio will be challeged to meet its 2020 Istalled Capacity Requiremet (ICR) without ew resources or the repowerig of mothballed plats. More importatly, ISO s calculatios do t iclude Pilgrim (Massachusetts) or Millstoe (Coecticut) uclear plats, which represet a additioal 2,500 MW that some experts have cosidered to be at risk of closig. How did we get here? Over the past 15 years, New Eglad has implemeted short-sighted electricity policies that have led to a hodgepodge of madates ad regulatios that favor reewable eergy geeratio ad state-decreed log-term cotracts betwee electricity suppliers ad reewable electricity geerators. A sigificat factor i the premature closig of Vermot Yakee uclear plat was the cotiued expasio of RPS ad the PPAs that accompay them. Add that to the federal productio tax credits that beefit wid farms, givig them a $50/MWh head start o their competitors i the marketplace. This allows them to submit egative bids ito the market, artificially depressig prices which provides short-term savigs, but ultimately leads to more base load retiremets ad log-term pai for ratepayers. So why have electricity prices ot reached the historic heights of last witer? Two reasos: First, it has ot bee as cold this witer ad this has put less pressure o electricity demad. Secod, ad more importatly, we have had a icrease i liquefied atural gas (LNG) imports maily due to the iclusio of LNG i the witer reliability program. The Witer Reliability Program was implemeted last witer (without LNG) ad was largely resposible for keepig the lights o durig last witer s cold sap ad has played a similarly importat role this Jauary. This out-of-market program is desiged to icet oil, atural gas ad dual-fueled geerators to carry ivetory (oil) or to cotract for fuel (LNG) esurig that they have sufficiet fuel reserves to operate whe called upo by guarateeig compesatio for uused oil ivetory ($18/barrel) or uused LNG cotract volume ($3/MMbtu). Last summer, New Eglad s witer LNG strip prices were beig offered with the highest forward prices which meas that LNG takers from Triidad chose New Eglad over Europe or Asia. The Northeast Gateway, a LNG receivig facility located 13 miles off of the coast of Bosto, has provided the regio with a additioal 1 bcf of LNG this witer from a facility that has laid dormat sice the Sprig of The added LNG has led to crushig of the basis pricig for atural gas at the Algoqui Termial, which reached a sigle-day record high last witer of $73.39, but has barely breeched the $10.00 mark this witer. We ca thak ISO s chages to the Witer Reliability Program for the icreased LNG supplies, but is this a log-term solutio? While the program has kept the lights o ad the iflux of LNG supplies have suppressed prices this witer it would be foolhardy to deped o LNG imports as a log-term solutio to future electricity supply shortages. Moth-over-moth, Jauary uit sales of maufactured dwelligs, codomiiums ad sigle-family houses declied 33 percet i Belkap, Carroll ad Grafto couties, from a combied 188 closigs i Jauary 2014 to just 124 last moth. The slowdow was also reflected i the December to Jauary figures, with total sales droppig a average of 62.5 percet, NNEREN figures show. The NH Alpie Racig Associatio (NHARA) ope evet was atteded by 275 boys ad girls, aged eight to 14, from race programs across New Hampshire. The race is held aually by the GSC i memory of Gus Pitou, Gilford residet ad Olympia Pey Pitou s father, who died at the age of 53 i 1965 after his daughter s Olympic triumphs. Gus Pitou cotributed greatly to the growth of juior skiig i the lakes regio i the 1950s ad 1960s. Although he loved to ski himself, his passio was teachig youg childre the sport. The first Gus Pitou Memorial Giat Slalom was held i 1966 by the Gustock Ski Club, the year after his death. Trophies for the wiers were give to racers i the top five places ad medals to places six through 10. Pey Pitou was the preseter. I the U-10 girls divisio, Alia Horsley from Suapee took the top spot, Emma Saders from GSC was secod ad Elizabeth Harrell from Suapee came i third.
