FREE Wiipesaukee River Ru ushers i the ew year BY DONNA RHODES Drhodes@salmopress.com FRANKLIN The 34th aual Wiipesaukee River Ru attracted early 50 kayakers to the area o New Year s Day as part of their ritual to demostrate the may attractios ad recreatioal opportuities offered by the sceic waterway. James Detzel of Campto was oe of the hardy white water ethusiasts who maeuvered his way through the Class 1-4 rapids betwee Cross Mill Road i Northfield ad Trestle View Park i Frakli. It was a great trip. This is my fourth year of doig this, ad it s a great way to start the ew paddlig seaso, said Detzel. May of the kayakers said they make at least oe ru each moth of the year. O New Year s Day though, the social aspect of meetig up with both old frieds ad ew is a added attractio i the somewhat solitary sport as paddlers gather o the baks of the Wiipesaukee River. I m a die hard. This is my fifth year of comig to Frakli o New Year s, said Jeremy Laucks of New Hampto. I m seeig a lot of people I have t see i a log time, the su s out, ad that all makes a big differece i makig it a special day. Eve with the sushie, temperatures o Jauary 1st ligered i the low to mid 20 s though ad the river was flowig at 1,500 cubic feet per secod, which limited the paddlig to those who truly kow the sport. Besides kayaks, there were also some specially built white water caoes that took to the water as well as a few rafts, like oe that a ethusiastic group of wome from Massachusetts rode through the rapids. I ve ru this river a lot through the Class 2 rapids up above, but this was my first time comig dow the lower ed i a raft, said Melaie Rausch of Chelsea, Mass. It was so much fu that we re goig back up to do it agai. Paddlers said that the trip from Northfield to Frakli typically takes about three to four miutes whe doe ostop, but most took it slow last week, stayig i groups ad ejoyig every miute of pleasure that the day offered. A lot of us are doig the distace i about a half hour today, just takig our time ad relaxig, said Chris Clark of Bristol. Gustock opeed for the seaso o Dec. 5, ad has bee seeig healthy umbers. Bill Quigley, Director of Marketig ad Sales for Gustock, said aroud 1,500 people have come to the moutai sice its opeig day. Christmas vacatio brought up more people to the slopes. Quigley said the crowds have steadily sice Christmas day with sowmakig goig o regularly. Last Wedesday, Gustock held its aual Gustock Rocks New Year s Eve evet to celebrate the start of Gustock Rocks New Year s Eve was a eveig log evet with evets for the whole family. The party was ope for ayoe, with special rates for people comig to ski, sowboard, or tube that eveig. Bads played i the mai lodge through the evet, families could board a horse draw carriage for hayrides through the property, ad a DJ spu tues. Guests could also get their faces paited ad get balloo creatios. Quigley said team members also took GoPro pics. The regularly scheduled sowshoe tours, however, were cacelled that ight because of the lack of sow. The eveig eded with the torchlight parade dow the moutai. At midight, fireworks shot off over the moutai to mark the New Year. Quigley said the sales of ight tickets for that ight were comparable to last year ad may seaso pass holders also showed up. He said a lot more of the day ticket holders stayed loger. We had a lot of people who decided to make a full day of it; they re ot just comig at ight, Quigley said. He said the moutai is already close to last year s umbers, with busiess pickig up the day after Christmas. We re pleasatly surprised as to how the seaso is goig so far, Quigley said. The heavy rais ad warm weather followig Christmas Eve melted the sow across the area, though the trails stayed packed with sow. Quigley said the sowmakig crew has bee workig hard ad the coditios have bee improvig daily.
