Facig everythig from milder Class 1 to challegig Class 4 rapids alog the way, kayakers, rafters ad caoeists came from ot oly all across New Eglad but from as far away as Colorado, too. Temperatures last Friday morig were i the mid-30s ad, decked out i their specialized protective gear, that could t have made the participats happier. It s balmy out here today, may declared with a gri as they climbed out of their vessels, eager for aother ru o the Wiipesaukee River. Water levels also had them smilig as they avigated the waters from Cross Mill Road i Northfield to Trestle Park i Frakli. It s perfect really; the water s at a great level ad there s just eough sow to make it look like witer ow, said Adrew Fourier of Northfield. Uified Sports is a combiatio of ocompetitive high school athletes teamed up with classmates who have itellectual disabilities. Together they work to promote skill developmet, sportsmaship ad a love for friedly competitio. Last year s jamboree that Cotigiai ad her fried Laura Davies put together was the first of its kid i the state, ad it was met with othig shy of raves from athletes, families ad the public as they also raised $2,000 for Special Olympics New Hampshire. As a former threesport athlete at Belmot, this is ear ad dear to my heart, Cotigiai said. I had a lot of parets ad gradparets huggig me last year, sayig they ever got to see their child play i a touramet like that before ad that made it all worthwhile. The packed gymasium last Jauary had everyoe o their feet cheerig for each basket ad great play o the court, regardless of which team the player was o. We had a studet from Belmot amed Natha. Wiisquam capped off a domiatig touramet with a wi over Divisio II Kigswood Regioal High School i the champioship game o Dec. 31. It was the secod year i a row the Bears took home the touramet crow, as they also beat Kigswood i last year's fial. But the Sachems showed why they're oe of the top teams i Divisio III i the secod half, outscorig Wiisquam by a margi to pull away for a victory at Gilford High School. We kew playig Lacoia was goig to be a challege, said Wiisquam head coach Bob McNutt. Our goal was to stay i it goig ito the secod half ad we did that. We were dow 10 at half. But Lacoia's so tough, they kept comig. Trailig at halftime, Wiisquam got a pair of early baskets from Laura Harmo to keep withi strikig distace.
