6 The Historic Geerator Buildig DURING A NEW GENERATING STATION WAS BUILT AT COUNTERSLIP TO CATER FOR THE MASSIVE EXPANSION TO THE BRISTOL TRAMWAYS SYSTEM THE FIRST CONVENTIONAL OVERHEAD ELECTRIC TRAMWAYS SYSTEM IN THE UK. The buildig was oe of the first commissios for William Curtis Gree. His later works icluded the Dorchester Hotel i Park Lae. The electrical desig ad developmet of the Bristol Tramways & Carriage Co system is due to two me; James Clifto Robiso ad Horace Field Parshall, who was a member of the Istitutio of Electrical Egieers. Parshall s first major task was as a cosultat o the desig of the Bristol Tramways System ad geerators at Couterslip. The mai plat at Couterslip cosisted of four vertical cross compoud 750 BHP steam egies each directly coupled to four DC geerators each with a 625kW capability. The mai power statio delivered power for the Bristol tramways from the start of the 20th cetury util Good Friday, April 11th 1941, whe a bomb hit St Philips Bridge ad cut the power cables.
