4 Opiio A4 Thursday, May 24, 2018 STRATEGIES FOR LIVING O religio ad govermet BY LARRY SCOTT I recetly leared, writes political commetator Gle Beck, that the Uited States govermet was actually tryig to strip God out of a homeless shelter for previously icarcerated wome strugglig i Colorado. Marily Vyzourek, the woma who rus a orgaizatio called Gospel Shelters for Wome, was told that she could o loger offer Bible studies at her shelter. Our govermet decided that the shelter s acceptace of two $25,000 federal grats made them subserviet to their wills (From David Barto, The Jefferso Lies, Locatio 62). Marily Vyzourek, to her credit, refused to back dow from the govermet s demad ad lost the grat. Why? I the govermet s view, to preserve the separatio of church ad state. May people believe that this cocept goes back to the First Amedmet to our Costitutio. It does ot! The First Amedmet was ever iteded to be uderstood this way. To the cotrary, the Amedmet should have protected Ms. Vyzourek from govermetal iterferece. The Amedmet simply states, Cogress shall make o law respectig a establishmet of religio or prohibitig the free exercise thereof Ms. Vyzourek should ever have had a problem; the Costitutio was o her side! The separatio clause is, actually, a recet cocept. I 1947, the Supreme Court, i Everso v. Board of Educatio, made this statemet: The First Amedmet has erected a wall betwee church ad state. That wall must be kept high ad impregable. We could ot approve the slightest breach. Followig this declaratio, the Supreme Court ad umerous lower courts bega strikig dow religious activities ad expressios which had bee costitutioal for the previous 150 years (David Barto, Origial Itet, p. 13). The First Amedmet was ever meat to be used this way. Our Foudig Fathers were ope to the ifluece of the Church. The Bible was used as a textbook i may of their early schools. What our early leaders did ot wat was for the govermet to have cotrol over church affairs. But the secularizatio of our society has reversed the Amedmet s origial itet. To the Christia commuity, the results have bee devastatig. The Bible has bee removed from our classrooms ad God has become a four-letter word. A ew geeratio of childre is emergig with little uderstadig of God ad o familiarity with His Word. Without a objective stadard of morality, our childre have bee left to determie their ow stadards of right ad wrog. Perhaps the reaso the Christia message has geerated so much atagoism is that we claim a exclusive uderstadig of truth. We have little choice if we are to be true to our faith. Jesus said, I am the way ad the truth ad the life. No oe comes to the Father except through me. Jesus was quite clear: He is our oly access to God. But the drive to share our faith is more tha theological; it is persoal. We have foud our relatioship with God to be immesely rewardig. Our itet is ot to berate others whe they are wrog, or coversely, proudly proclaimig that we are right. That is ot our attitude. We are simply grateful to God that we have foud a better way -- His Name is Jesus Christ -- ad we are drive to share the good ews. You wat to talk about it? Hit me up at rlarryscott@gmail.com. The Seate begis attachig amedmets or legislatio (bills that failed i the House) to bills of a similar ature. The, each body ca agree or ot with the chages, or the bill ca be set to a Committee of Coferece. The C of C is comprised of a equal umber of each house to come to a uaimous compromise. Did you kow these meetig are o the Caledar ad ope to the public? The lobbyists atted ad offer commets whe asked. You could too. The modified bill the returs to both houses for aother vote. The importace of the C of C caot be overstressed. Let s look at a few of these modified bills. HB 1636 bega as a bill to seek a death beefit for a teacher killed at school. It retured to the House with amedmets for teacher prep, allowace for charter schools to use uused facilities, ad HB 193, the educatioal savigs accouts for school choice. The strategy is that the member has a favorite i this groupig ad will vote to pass the overall bill (HB1636), the sed it to a Committee of Coferece for a secod chace. I did like HB 193 but it still failed. Aother attempt will eed to be made i the future. HB 1538 was origially a bill to fix a bad stad but morphed ito a asbestos liability bill! The Sed your letters! HB 1565 addressed people with such sever psychiatric disorders that they pose a threat to the public ad required segregatio. It was set to a Committee of Coferece. New Hampshire has a Secure Psychiatric Uit iside the priso. This facility is capable of performig the task but these people should ot be treated as covicted felos. There is o questio that they are a dager to themselves ad others. This has bee a ogoig issue ad we have delayed buildig a separate facility. Maybe it s time to sped some of the moey beig used for drug treatmet to address this problem. We will vote o the results that the C of C produces ad vote o it o the 23rd. HB 1372 was ameded by the Seate, ad the House cocurred. Did you kow that some employers are requirig a subcutaeous (uder the ski) chip for employees? This allows easy idetificatio ad etry ito closed areas. Sorry! We do this to dogs ad cats, ot people. We voted agaist employers requirig a implatatio as a coditio of employmet. The House recovees o May 23 to vote o reports from the C of C. I am i the process of reviewig the very iterestig Caledar. I am available for discussios so call me at or me at dave@saborhall.et. I the past, whe you ve made charitable doatios, it s bee a wi-wi: You were able to provide support to a worthy orgaizatio ad you received some valuable tax beefits. But with the passage of the ew tax laws, thigs may have chaged cosiderably for may people. Are there still tax beefits to makig a charitable doatio? Here s some backgroud: Previously, you may have bee able to deduct your charitable doatios if you itemized deductios o your icome tax retur. So, for example, if you were i the 25 percet tax bracket ad you gave $1,000 to a qualified charity, you may have bee able to deduct $250. But uder the ew tax laws, the stadard deductio is almost doubled for 2018, to $24,000 for joit filers, ad $12,000 for sigle filers. As a result, far fewer people are likely to itemize their deductios. If you re i this group, you may fid that you have less icetive, at least for tax reasos, to make charitable gifts. However, receivig a tax deductio is ot the oly tax beefit of makig a charitable gift. If you ow a IRA ad you re 70 ½ or older, you geerally must start takig withdrawals techically called required miimum distributios, or RMDs from your traditioal IRA. (Roth IRAs are ot subject to RMDs util after the death of the ower.) If istead of withdrawig the moey, the IRA ower decides to trasfer the fuds directly to a qualified charity, the distributed amout ca be excluded from the IRA ower s icome. So, i effect, you ca get a sizable tax beefit from your geerosity. I fact, you may be able to move up to $100,000 from your IRA per year to a eligible charity ad have it cout as your RMDs, eve if the amout doated is more tha the required miimum withdrawal. Eve if you are t 70 ½ yet, you might still gai some tax beefits from certai types of charitable doatios. Whe you itemized, ad you doated appreciated stocks, you were geerally allowed a charitable deductio for the full fair market value of the stocks o the date of the trasfer, eve if your origial cost was oly a fractio of that value. Now, if you do t itemize, that charitable cotributio is ot deductible, but you ca still avoid the capital gais taxes you d have to pay if you sold the securities, rather tha doatig them. Fially, you could ame a qualified charity as a beeficiary of your IRA or 401(k). This ca allow the assets to pass free of icome tax to the charitable group. Give the icreased stadard deductio resultig from the ew tax laws, may charitable groups are worried about the potetial loss of cotributios. Noetheless, as we ve see, you ca still fid ways to get some tax beefits from your ow charitable gifts. Ad you ll still get the same satisfactio from supportig a good cause.
