JEANIE FORRESTER District 2 Last week, I had the opportuity to stop i at a ew restaurat i Plymouth, a place high o a little hill called The Last Chair. Great food, great eviromet ad a great story of homegrow success here i the Graite State. This uique establishmet was the dream of Matt ad Dave, two local guys. I got to hear their story the geesis of their dream ad the hard work they put ito makig their dream a reality. Their story cofirmed to me that i this last legislative sessio, we were o the right path to makig New Hampshire a more busiess friedly state by the laws we eacted this sessio ad i past sessios. As a former Mai Street director workig with small busiesses (ad beig a small busiess ower myself), I kow how hard our restaurats, retail shops, ad other busiesses work to survive. I also kow how much our local busiesses support our commuities. So it is frustratig whe it seems like we have to costatly defed our efforts to help busiesses. For example, i the process Letters to the Editor to get New Hampshire s ecoomy movig forward ad these busiess-friedly laws ad modest cuts i the state s busiess taxes seds a message to our job creators i New Hampshire ad those lookig to move here that we re ope for busiess. New Hampshire had the 3rd highest busiess tax rates i the coutry ad these reductios starts us o the path to a competitive busiess eviromet. So whe I left The Last Chair that eveig, I thought about all the good thigs we ve doe i the last six years ad more specifically i this last sessio to help the busiesses i the Graite State. There is more to do to help New Hampshire become the state that leads the pack i attractig ew busiesses ad workig to retai the busiesses we have ow. Ad I am cofidet that our success will breed more success i the years to come. As always, I wat to hear from you. If you have a cocer you d like to share, a evet you d like me to atted, or a problem you thik I might be able to help with please call ( ) or at Jeaie@jeaieforrester. com. Why is Bristol losig so may tow employees? of buildig our state budget, we brought forward laguage that would reduce the busiess profits tax ad busiess eterprise tax over the ext three budgets (from 8.5 percet to 7.9 percet o the busiess profits tax, ad by 10 percet for the busiess eterprise tax). You may recall that the Goveror vetoed our budget, sayig that our proposed cuts would blow a $80 millio hole i the state budget. But we kew that was ot correct, ad here we are today, with a estimated $100 millio-plus over reveue projectios. The Goveror had proposed more tha $129 millio i ew fees ad taxes; but we foud a way to build a budget without addig a uecessary fiacial burde oto our hardworkig citizes ad still provide relief to our hardworkig busiesses. We set a sigal to the busiess commuity that we were serious about brigig back the New Hampshire Advatage ad beig a state that ca lead New Eglad ecoomically. Other busiess-friedly legislatio icluded expadig the research ad developmet tax credit. I 2016, almost 200 New Hampshire busiesses received tax credits. The research ad developmet tax credit program beefits all busiesses small, medium, ad large throughout the Graite State. Accordig to the Commissioer of the Departmet of Reveue Admiistratio, This year, more compaies tha ever before received grats, provig that busiesses, especially small busiesses, cotiue to see the advatage of this importat tax credit i helpig them grow, create jobs, ad thrive i the Graite State. We also eacted legislatio that protects New Hampshire busiesses from ufair tax treatmet whe they go public or acquire ew ivestmet capital. We approved reforms to workers compesatio, eablig employers to cotest ureasoable health care chages. We updated ad reformed New Hampshire s securities laws. Ad, we lowered the busiess profits tax for the first time i 20 years ad the busiess eterprise tax for the first time ever, eablig New Hampshire to start to regai its competitiveess over eighborig states. Our focus has bee To the Editor: Why is Bristol losig so may taleted tow employees? What I am talkig about is, i just a little over a year, the tow has lost the tow admiistrator, three fiace officers, huma resource, several police offices, Lad Use, assistat tax collector, highway/water departmet persoel, part time maiteace perso, ad of course, the fire chief, who just resiged after beig o paid admiistrative leave for three ad oe half moths. Bristol has lost almost all the executive staff with all those years of kowledge. By my cout, there are at least 15 employees that left our employmet. That is about a 18 percet tur-over rate, which is ot very good, ad cost us a lot to replace. So, why is Bristol losig so may employees? Is it the pay, beefits, workig coditios, maagemet, other? I am ot sure why, but do ot believe it is pay or beefits because may of the employees were here for years. Workig coditios? Maybe, with the mass exodus I am sure i some cases the workig coditios have bee stressful. I my opiio this screams of a maagemet problem ad the select board are the maagers. If we could oly be a flies o the wall at all the o-public meetigs they had durig this time we would really lear the truth. It should make you woder what i the world is goig o with our select board. Why the mass exodus? What are they doig wrog, or ot doig at all? Agai, I wish I could have heard some of those o-public meetigs. But whe it comes dow to it, it is the select board s resposibility to maage the employees ad the tow. It should ot be left up to the tow admiistrator ad departmet heads to do this work. Each select board member gets $3,200 a year. I am startig to woder for what. You the voters eed to decide what you wat ad vote i March. By havig a high tur-over, cost us i kowledge, expertise ad moey. We ca fix this by electig ew select board members ad gettig Bristol back i balace with its employees! The people of Bristol ca make the differece by votig ad comig to tow meetig i March. Help stop the mass exodus ad disorder i our tow. Joh Sellers Bristol

MARK ON THE MARKETS Risk ad you BY MARK PATTERSON Ay fiacial advisor, broker or ivestmet advisor will typically try to assess the amout of risk that their cliet is willig to accept. There are of variety of methods ad questioaires used to attempt to accomplish the risk assessmet as accurately as possible. Over time, I have foud that what the cliet tells me i the calm of my office ad how they feel durig difficult markets ca be very differet. The typical egative reactio is two a half times greater i a bad or decliig market tha cliet s feeligs i good, or up market. Curret research states that up to 80 percet of people that have ivestmet accouts carry far more risk tha their true risk tolerace levels. Ever sice March 9, 2009, the fear levels of ivestors have bee very low which drives complacecy. The bechmark S&P 500 idex is used to determie BETA i a stock, mutual fud or exchage traded fud that primarily hold stocks. If a stock or fud has a umber higher tha oe, it is more volatile tha the bechmark S&P 500 idex. If the umber is lower tha oe it is less volatile, simple as that. Advisors like myself that desiged portfolios typically usig stocks, ETF s, bods ad optios will try to match the objectives of the portfolio with the cliet s risk tolerace ad eeds. Oe of the most commo curiosities that I see the portfolio, typically of mutual fuds, is that a cliet eedig icome from their ivestmets is i a accumulatio vehicle such as a growth stock mutual fud. There are all kids of risk ivolved with ivestig moey. Market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, iterest rate risk ad the risk that is really ot discussed as much as it should be which is sequece of returs risk. Sequece of returs risk is critical for those approachig retiremet. Market performace is key whe you start subtractig assets as icome from those assets if they are ot desiged for sustaiability. What used to be the 4 percet rule, i other words takig out 4 percet of your assets per year to live o has ow become the 1.6 percet rule partly because of the low iterest rate eviromet. As stated earlier, most people carry much more ivestmet risk tha they were aware of. Fidig that true risk tolerace ad matchig it up to a portfolio that fits the eeds of the cliet s is paramout. But you as the cliet also must realize that if you have your advisor set up your portfolio for limited risk, that will typically come with limited growth coversely a lot of potetial growth may come with a lot of risk. For a hoest ad maybe elighteig risk assessmet go to my website, com, go to tools ad the risk aalysis. The software Riskalyze will give you a risk umber betwee oe ad 99, oe beig the least amout of risk that you re willig to accept, 99 beig the most. It asks about real dollar umbers versus percetages. You may be surprised what your true risk tolerace is versus how you are ivested. Mark Patterso is a advisor with M HP asset maagemet ad ca be reached at or Mark@MHP-asset.com. Washigto was moved to Great Gle due to iclemet weather at the summit of Washigto. Each year a team of mules helps a adaptive athlete reach the summit. This happy group is part of Team Bella, who participated i the evet o Aug. 7. This time aroud, a much differet Olympic experiece Two ad a half years ago, I stood i a airport i Moscow, admittedly a bit ervous but also very much excited about what the ext two weeks were to hold. I was o my way to Sochi for the 2014 Witer Olympics ad those opeig ceremoies were happeig o the televisio right i frot of me i that Moscow airport. I could t uderstad aythig that the aoucers were sayig, but it was cool to just watch the ceremoies ad kow I was goig to be there i a few hours. Flash forward to Friday ight ad I was sittig i my livig room with the televisio tued to NBC as the Olympics retured, this time the Olympics of the summer variety, kickig off i Rio de Jaeiro i Brazil. I was much less ervous but still a bit excited about what is comig, maily because I am a big fa of the Olympics ad ejoy the umerous competitios throughout the two weeks of actio. However, there was o doubt that this year s Olympic experiece was goig to be a bit differet tha my most recet Olympic experiece. This oe was goig to be completely through my televisio. But, there were also a SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING lot of similarities to the two experieces. As I prepared to leave back i February of 2014, I saw may articles ad ews pieces about how Sochi was ot ready for the Olympics, that athletes ad media members were arrivig to fid that their rooms were t doe, amog other issues. While that was i my head while I was travelig ad was a cocer, whe I arrived i Sochi I foud that my room was ready ad durig my two weeks i Sochi I had just oe room issue (o hot water oe morig). So I had o complaits at all. Rio has bee experiecig some of the same problems, reportedly ayway. There are buildigs that are t complete yet ad some athletes are fidig the experiece a bit uique. The similarities do t really ed there either. As evidet by the sweepig views NBC has bee showig viewers each ight, Rio is a beautiful city ad so was Sochi. However, both were surrouded by areas of poverty that made the shiig ew facilities of the Olympics stad out eve more agaist the habitats of may of the people of the city. While Sochi had its dog problem, with may loose dogs ruig aroud the city, Rio seems to have a trash problem, as the waters used for ope water swimmig ad sailig have traditioally bee very polluted, raisig cocers from athletes about their safety. Ad of course, there s also Zika, which was ot a cocer i Sochi. That beig said, I was excited to tur o my televisio o Friday ight ad watch as the greatest athletes i the world came together for a ight of celebratio. For a momet, there was o fightig, o war ad o bad blood, there was just athletes represetig their coutries with pride. While I decided agaist a Rio trip (ot much o the local coectios frot), I did submit my applicatio for credetials for the 2018 Witer Olympics. So who kows, maybe I ll be back. But whe you retire, should you chage course ad adjust your ivestmet strategy from offese to defese? Actually, it s ot quite that simple. To begi with, eve while you are workig, you do t wat your portfolio to be completely filled with growthorieted ivestmets, such as stocks. If it were, you would likely be takig o a degree of ivestmet risk that s too high, because, as you may kow, stocks will fluctuate i price sometimes sigificatly. Ad if you oly ow stocks, you could take a big hit durig a market dowtur. That s why you eed to have a array of ivestmets stocks, bods, certificates of deposit (CDs) ad so o. So, your first impressio might be that istead of maitaiig the diversified portfolio you had whe you were workig, you eed to switch to predomiatly safe ivestmets, such as CDs ad Treasury bods, to reduce the risk of losig pricipal. Ad such a strategy might ideed be effective if your retiremet were oly goig to last a year or so. But the chaces are reasoably good that you could be retired for two, or possibly eve three, decades. If that s the case, the you will have to deal with a threat to your lifestyle that you might ot have cosidered: iflatio. We ve had low iflatio for several years, but that could chage i the future. To protect yourself agaist iflatio, you will fid that ivestmets such as CDs ad Treasury bods are typically ot much help. I fact, i a low-rate eviromet, your returs o these ivestmets may ot eve keep up with iflatio, much less keep you ahead of it. That s ot to say they have o value they ca provide you with a icome stream ad help lower your overall ivestmet risk. JOSHUA SPAULDING ALLIE SKELLEY gives the thumbs-up as he heads out from the Meredith docks o his paddleboard jourey to Wolfeboro. Paddlig for a cause Allie Skelley paddleboards Lake Wiipesaukee to raise fuds for Travis Roy Foudatio BY JOSHUA SPAULDING Sports Editor WOLFEBORO Most people hope for suy, warm weather o the weeked. O Suday, July 31, Kigswood graduate Allie Skelley was ot oe of those people. Skelley, who is a former coach at Holderess ad ow works at Portsmouth Abbey School i Rhode Islad, has a log history with the Travis Roy Foudatio ad was lookig for a way to raise moey for the foudatio. It s somethig that s uique, somethig that has t bee doe, Skelley said of his pla to paddle from Meredith to Wolfeboro o a paddleboard. Paddleboardig is a ew, fu thig to do. With a overcast sky ad threats of rai, Skelley set out from the tow docks i Meredith at about 6:20 a.m. o July 31, with a goal of reachig Wolfeboro some time after oo. He more tha accomplished that, as he pulled ito the Wolfeboro tow docks at 11:50, four ad a half hours after startig out. Roy was a Bosto Uiversity hockey player who was ijured i his first shift i a college game ad was paralyzed. Sice the he has worked to raise moey for spial ijury research. I 2002, five years after Roy was paralyzed, Skelley foud himself i a very similar situatio, as he fractured his eck durig a hockey game for St. Lawrece Uiversity. However, Skelley couts himself lucky that he was bee able to overcome his ijury ad has moved o to coachig ad cotiuig to raise moey for the cause that s dear to him. Travis is i a wheelchair, I was very close to havig a life like that, Skelley said. At the ed of the day, it s ot about me, it s about him (Roy) ad his foudatio ad tryig to raise as much moey as possible. Skelley oted he got a from Roy offerig words of ecouragemet for his jourey. The Travis Roy Foudatio s aual wiffle ball touramet will be held this weeked, Aug i Essex, Vt. ad Skelley plas to preset Roy with the fuds raised from his trip at the aual touramet, which he plays i every year. Skelley said that he ad his wife, Steph, received paddleboards from his parets as weddig gifts ad have bee paddlig for about four years, but admitted that the 18 miles from Meredith to Wolfeboro was way beyod what he had ever doe before. Ad with the dreary weather, the boats were t prevalet o the lake either. Util we got to the broads, it was smooth, Skelley said. Halfway through the broads it got a little rough. But it was like the lake was closed, he added. We absolutely lucked out as far as the weather ad lake traffic. Skelley oted that i additio to the calm water ad cooler weather, he was also aided i his jourey by a differet paddleboard that was loaed to him by a family fried. They offered up their board ad it s a little quicker, Skelley said. Eve so, Skelley was still surprised by how quickly he made the jourey. As he paddled ito the docks i Wolfeboro, he was greeted by a large group of family ad frieds, icludig his parets, his wife ad so. They cheered him o as he made his way across Wolfeboro Bay ad ito the docks, where his ucle had docked a boat.
