(By the way, o other state had led eve a sigle year i both math ad eglish o the NAEP so clearly Massachusetts was doig somethig right.) The saddest part of the Massachusetts story is that, i a effort to chase Federal Race-To-The-Top grat moey, the Goveror (do t forget, a fried of Presidet Obama) pushed exceedigly hard to drop the excellet stadards Massachusetts had, ad his efforts succeeded. You see, the applicatio for grat moey was looked o more favorably if the state had agreed to use Commo Core. The result beig, as you correctly stated, Massachusetts ow uses Commo Core. 5 CULTURE October 31, 2013 A5 How ca Norther Pass hold its head up high? By Joh Harriga Columist The other day, I had a call from a logtime reader of the Littleto Courier, who lives far dow below but ows property i several tows aroud the Littleto-Bethlehem-Jefferso area. Like may ladowers, he s bee followig the Norther Pass issue, but much more closely as it edges toward home. He was oto ways to mitigate the damage, ad seized o buryig the lie. If the Caadia govermet (read that Hydro Quebec ) is desperate to export power to the south, ad it is, why ot ru the lie dow the bed of the Coecticut River, as the much-ballyhooed Champlai-Hudso River pla iteds to do? Ad what about the project to ru lies buried through Maie ad uder the ocea to the lucrative markets of the Hartford-New York City market? This is, after all, what it s all about ot power that we (the orther New Eglad we ) eed or wat, but the wats of isatiable markets far dow below. There are so may facets to this issue. -New Hampshire was ever iteded to get ay of this power, or do we eed to. We export almost 80 percet as much power as we use. -What people dow below the otches seem to forget, or eve care about, is that this proposal agai, to the beefit of cosumers i the Hartford-New York market etails carvig out a huge ew right of way from souther Quebec across New Hampshire s North Coutry, some of the most magificet sceery i the East. -Tows alog the proposed lie would receive a tax boost i the iitial years that would drop like a lead balloo. As a busiess guy, I ve see this happe wheever I ve put a ew pritig press o the floor. It s called depreciatio. -Costructio jobs? A flash i the pa. It s a very short time. Sacrifice a huge tourism territory for short-term jobs? Ad durig that short term, we d get low-ed jobs. The high-ed jobs would go to workers from all over the coutry who are expert at erectig huge power lies, ad logically so. -Aesthetics, meaig marrig the coutryside for tourism, which is all we have left? You bet. The power lies to the Hartford-NYC market sig, ad we weep. -Ad last but ot least, what about property values ad sales potetials for abuttig or overlookig properties? Talk with your local real estate aget (but do t tell the kids). This is where I diverge from the bury it midset. It is all so easy to cotemplate, a paacea. Buried is coveiet, out of sight (well, at earth-level) ad theoretically out of mid. But a swath is still a swath, a gash is still a gash, a cleared right of way is still cleared. The size of our survey, with early 11,000 employers respodig, allows our cliets to bechmark their plas based upo pla type, regio, employee size ad idustry category more accurately tha ay other survey available, ad gives them the best opportuity to see how their pla stacks up agaist competitors plas ad so they ca better uderstad ad commuicate the value of their beefits to employees, says William Bald, Vice Presidet. For example, whe cosiderig a mid-size firm i Cocord, NH whose health pla cost for a sigle employee is $509, it is importat to compare agaist regioal bechmarks istead of atioal. Whe compared agaist the atioal average for all plas, their cost is $63 per moth more; however, whe compared with other CDHPs i the Northeast regio, this employer s cost is actually $26 per moth less expesive tha the average. Further still, compare this employer s cost to its closest peers usig a state-specific bechmark, which i NH is $519, ad it becomes clear this employer s mothly sigle premium is actually $10 less tha its competitors i the state. UBA Parter cliets saved, o average, 4.8 percet from their iitial medical pla reewal offer i 2013, which traslates to a staggerig $820 millio i aual medical pla cost savigs, says Thom Maga, CEO of UBA. Historically, bechmarkig data of this kid were uavailable to small ad midsize employers. Now, by usig such detailed iformatio, we are able to more accurately evaluate costs, ad ultimately give employers of all sizes a competitive edge i recruitig ad retaiig a superior workforce. Key treds by regio: Preferred provider orgaizatio (PPO) plas cotiue to be the domiat pla type offered to employees atioally, with approximately 47.2 percet of all employees erolled i this pla type, which is 4.7 percet more tha are erolled i health maiteace orgaizatios (HMOs) ad cosumer-drive health plas (CDHPs) combied. 12 SECTION B THE NewHampshireLakesAdMoutais.com THURSDAY October 31, 2013 Ride comes to a close as Bears fall at Gilford BY JEFF LAJOIE jlajoie@salmopress.com GILFORD For the first time i 15 years, the Gilford High School field hockey team had a place at the Fial Four. Behid two goals from seior Kelsey Buckley, the secod-seeded Golde Eagles reached the Divisio III semifials for the first time sice wiig a state title i 1998 o Saturday afteroo. Gilford held seveth-seeded Wiisquam Regioal High School scoreless i a 3-0 quarterfial roud victory i chilly coditios. This is ubelievable, said Buckley of the Eagles reachig the Fial Four. This team has come from the bottom up i just a few years. I ve bee dreamig about this for so log so it s just awesome that we were able to make it. The loss eded a outstadig seaso for the Bears (10-4-2), which reached the quarters thaks to a 3-0 wi over Lacoia i the prelimiary roud. Gilford had their sticks dow today ad we struggled with stoppig their hits, said Wiisquam coach Cherie Sow. Overall it was a strog seaso for us. We had our ups ad dows ad dealt with our share of ijuries. But it was a pretty good seaso for us. For third-year head coach Dave Rogacki, reachig the Fial Four was a culmiatio of a lot of hard work from his seior-lade group of players. They made my job so easy, bega Rogacki of his club. They take care of each other o ad off the field. This just proves that studet/athletes ca be successful. The last few years I thik the seiors felt a little disrespected. We have a team of very smart youg ladies but they re also very taleted field hockey players as well. Gilford, which wet durig the regular seaso agaist the Bears, got the scorig started 7:30 ito the first half. After a scrum i frot of the Wiisquam et, a shot that appeared destied for the back of the et was kept out by seior defeder Rachel Willcutt while o the groud. The referee blew the whistle ad awarded the Eagles a pealty stroke after the Bears were pealized for stoppig a sure goal, ad Buckley buried the shot up high ad off keeper Kedra Loerga s blocker for a 1-0 advatage. We ve bee practicig all seaso for that so I felt very prepared, said Buckley of the pealty stroke. I just tried to shut everythig out whe I was up there ad fortuately it worked out. Wiisquam, which came out of the gates fast i domiatig the first 10 miutes of play, was uable to cash i o a opportuity just two miutes later, but the Bears looked as though they had tied the game with 7:45 left i the half. A cross from Laure Bolstridge was kocked ito the back of the cage by Haley Poirier, but after coveig briefly, the officials ruled that the goal was scored with Poirier s leg, ad the tally was waved off. Wiisquam is always goig to start strog, said Rogacki. We talked about how we have to weather the storm ad the come right back at them. Usig that mometum, JEFF LAJOIE Wiisquam s Eri McNamara (left) battles with Kelsey Buckley of Gilford durig quarterfial roud actio o Saturday afteroo. The visitig Bears fell, 3-0. Gilford capitalized just 1:19 later. Off a pealty corer, juior Maddie Laflamme made a ice pass across to seior Rachel Bladford, whose shot trickled past Loerga i et. Buckley was right there o the doorstep, pushig the ball ito the back of the et for her secod tally of the half ad a 2-0 lead. I thought we domiated parts of the game ad we came back (after the pealty stroke), bega Sow. But we were t able to fiish off some of our chaces, ad Gilford seemed to be ready to capitalize. The outside hitter became the first player i program history sice Jamie Guyer i 1998 to reach the 500 career kill mark, as she totaled 11 kills i a 25-20, 25-10, victory over Belmot High School o Seior Night. I worked hard for this ad it meas so much, said Chapi, who etered the ight with 493 kills. I hoestly did t thik I d ever come so close to (500 kills). Wiisquam coach Mike Liverois, who early had a 500-kill performer three years ago whe Caroly Hajdusek fiished just four kills shy of the mark i a state champioship wi over Eppig, did t tell Chapi how close she was to the umber over the course of the seaso. The vetera coach, who wo his 200th career match earlier i the week, was impressed with the way his seior hadled ot kowig all seaso log. For the most part she did t kow so what I really like is that ot oce this seaso did she ask how may she eeded, Liverois explaied. That speaks a lot to her character. She s really all about the team. Every year she s gotte better ad stroger. Not may players ca hit a ball like she does. With the Bears already up a game after a tight wi, Liverois called timeout i game two with his team holdig a commadig 18-8 lead. I the huddle, he iformed Chapi that she was oe kill away from 500. Go ejoy it, he told her as the team headed back out o the floor. Just a few poits later, with Wiisquam o top 20-9 ad Bailey Log at the service lie, Chapi took a feed from setter Erica Doubleday ad put dow a kill that brought the match to a halt ad set off celebratios for the blue ad white. I the first ad third games we played like a team out there, said Belmot coach Missy Mier. Our defese was icredible. We dug a lot of balls, which we eeded to do because (Wiisquam) ca hit the ball, that s for sure. Kills from Mo Raymod ad Carissa Archibald, mixed i with a Chapi block brought the defedig champio Bears back however, with two more kills from Raymod settig up match poit at Becky Rapoza closed thigs out with a kill, ad Wiisquam fiished off the sweep to close out the regular seaso with a sterlig 14-2 record. Our hittig was the differece, said Liverois. I thought our offese did very well. Belmot is oe heck of a defesive team ad if you are t o, they ca keep poits alive. (Wiisquam has) a much stroger offese tha we do so we have to make sure our defese is aliged correctly agaist their hitters, Mier explaied. I that secod game, we lost that rhythm ad you saw the results. But ow we just have to put it behid us ad move o with the playoffs startig up. Chapi s 11 kills ad seve digs helped pace the Bears, while Raymod totaled 10 kills ad 12 digs. Log (seve kills), Archibald (five kills, 12 digs), Dallis Austi (eight digs) ad Doubleday (29 assists) all chipped i for the victory. Our first goal was to wi eough to be a top four seed, said Liverois. We ve prove that we ca wi if we are t a top four seed (last year s title came as the six seed) but it s easier to do it this way. For us, we re experieced i the touramet. I thik it s all about the brackets ad how the matchups shake out. Boles, Haddock lead Raiders past Lacoia BY JEFF LAJOIE jlajoie@salmopress.com BELMONT With goals from a pair of vetera performers, the Belmot High School boys soccer team picked up arguably its best wi of the regular seaso o Oct. 22. Seiors Joe Boles ad Austi Haddock both scored first half goals, ad the Red Raiders held o thaks to a stout defesive uit i the secod for a 2-1 victory over visitig Lacoia High School i Divisio III actio. This was a back ad forth slugfest, said Belmot assistat coach Jesse Elderki. I thik this was a big cofidece booster for us here i the last week of the regular seaso. The Red Raiders (7-7-1 after the wi) etered the cotest lookig to exact a bit of revege, as Lacoia (10-5) claimed a 3-1 wi whe the teams met back o Sept. 4. A lot has chaged sice the, icludig several differet lieups for Belmot. We ve take our share of lumps this seaso, admitted Elderki. Belmot early got o the board just 10 miutes ito the first half, with Brad Cyr s shot o a feed from Boles gettig tured away by Lacoia goalkeeper Pathavy Pradachith. But just two miutes later, the Raiders cashed i for real. Boles took a through ball at full speed over the middle, ad he calmly placed a shot to the far post for a 1-0 lead. It s all about settig the toe i a game like this, Elderki said of the quick start. The Sachems aswered Belmot s early strike i the 27th miute however, as Aida Dea equalized o a oe-timer from Adrew Sykes to kot thigs up at Rogacki. We kew it was goig to be a great game, said Buckley of her expectatios. (Wiisquam) always plays with a lot of heart ad we had two really close games with them already this seaso. The secod half saw both teams buzzig aroud the respective ets, though Belmot keeper Jo Leclair was solid i both positioig ad distributig out of the back. The youg goalie did t allow may real scorig threats i holdig the Sachems off the board. He defiitely played above himself today, said Elderki of Leclair. Ad you could tell how pleased he was with that big smile o his face after the game. Nick Oakes had Belmot s best scorig chace of the secod half i the 67th miute, as he stole the ball from a Lacoia defeder ad broke i o Pradachith, oly to just miss wide. Boles put a boomig strike o et i the 79th miute, but a divig save from Pradachith eabled the Sachems to stay withi a goal. These are two teams that look to play, bega Elderki. We ve had those types of goals throughout the seaso, said Wiisquam coach Cherie Sow, otig her side had scored at least twice after the buzzer had souded. We did well to execute with o time left ad that was a mometum chage for us. Wiisquam domiated the secod half, addig to its lead with 10:58 remaiig whe Kayla Laga scored o a feed from Mackezie Byers to make it 2-0. Our commuicatio was really good today, said McNamara of the wi. We defiitely picked it up beig the playoffs ad all ad I thought we all worked great together out there. It was the secod wi o the seaso over Lacoia for the Bears, as the club also blaked the Sachems 4-0 whe they met back o Sept. 18 i Lacoia.
