2 SFO MUSEUM Chia Clipper A Educatioal Progra for Grade Two ad Grade Three Studets This is a free, hads-o educatioal progra desiged for secod grade ad third grade studets cetered o the curret exhibitio Chia Clipper. The progra icludes directed lookig, explorig the history of tras-pacific air service, ad hads-o activities to lear about the basic priciples of powered flight with akig ad flyig paper airplaes. The progra is guided by experieced useu ad library staff ad rus 45 iutes. Additioal activities are also available. Please see the Califoria Departet of Educatio Cotet Stadards o page 4 for the subject areas that are addressed i this progra. Chia Clipper ca accoodate up to approxiately 30 studets at a tie. Special arrageets ca be ade for groups larger tha 30. Schedule: PROGRAM PLAN Studets arrive at the aviatio useu ad library ad deposit bags, jackets, etc. Staff itroductios, welcoig rearks, ad descriptio of the two plaed activities. Studets are divided ito two groups. Oe group will do the BUILD IT! ACTIVITY ad MAP IT! ACTIVITY through a exploratio of the Chia Clipper exhibitio. Oe group will do the FLY IT! ACTIVITY by discussig how airplaes fly ad the akig ad flyig paper airplaes. Allow iutes for each group s activity, the groups will switch activities. Coclusio ad wrap-up. Additioal guided useu activities ad airport tours are also available to exted class visits as described o page 5. 1

3 ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION BUILD IT! ACTIVITY Above is the board used to lead a discussio about the differet flyig boats used by Pa Aerica Airways. Studets are directed to look at ad exaie the three types of flyig boats used by Pa Aerica Airways. Studets are give differet parts of each airplae to asseble each flyig boat o the board. The group explores ad discusses flyig boat desig evolutio previously discussed through questioig ad directed lookig. The group will the discuss the routes of flyig boats, as established by the first tras-pacific route by Pa Aerica Airways i MAP IT! Studets deostrate the pitch, roll, ad yaw oveets of a airplae with their bodies. Each studet akes a paper airplae ad the test flies it. Older studets ca easure results. The peraet collectio focuses o the history of coercial aviatio with a ephasis o the West Coast ad the Pacific 1937 Passeger Lobby regio.
