Strategies for Livig BY LARRY SCOTT Dr. William Lae Craig, i his book, O Guard, tells his persoal story, oe that seems to summarize much of what I have bee attemptig to highlight i this colum. Raised i a fie although o-christia home, while still a tee-ager, he bega questioig his place ad purpose i life. To fid a aswer he bega attedig a large church but soo discovered that that fellowship was little more tha a social club. Although claimig to be Christias, he foud they were livig by stadards far lower tha his ow, pretedig to be somethig they were ot. O oe really bad hair day, he walked ito Germa class ad sat behid a girl that always seemed to be so happy. O impulse, he tapped her o the shoulder ad growled, Sady, what are you always so happy about ayway? I will let him tell the rest of the story. Well, Bill, she said, it s because I m saved! I was stued. I had ever heard laguage like this before. You re what? I demaded. I kow Jesus Christ as my persoal Savior, she explaied. I go to church, I said lamely. But that s ot eough, Bill, she said. You ve got to have Thak you for providig AP studets with testig space Lagueux was a part of Bristol's spedig problem To the Editor: Former selectma Shau Lagueux of Bristol respoded to a "letter to the editor" that I had submitted to this paper a few weeks ago. The title of his letter was "Simard Wrog Agai." Mr. Lagueux respods to two expeditures out of four that I metioed. Mr. Lagueux stated that I accused the selectme of "illegal spedig." Mr. Lagueux is mistake; I said o such thig. I said that these projects were completed "without beig icluded i the budget or voted o by the taxpayers." Those of you who kow me kow that I am a fiscal coservative; I hate to see taxpayer moey wasted o wats rather tha eeds. Mr. Lagueux states that the recet purchase of a $13,000 "Utility All Terrai Vehicle" was from a Highway Departmet Capital Reserve Fud, ad therefore permitted. Uder NH RSA 35:1 establishig Capital Reserve Fuds reads, Him really livig i your heart. That was the limit! What would He wat to do a thig like that for: I demaded. Because He loves you, Bill. That hit me like a to of bricks. Here I was, so filled with ager ad hate, ad she said there was someoe who really loved me. That bega for me the most agoizig period of soul-searchig that I ve ever bee through. I got a New Testamet ad read it from cover to cover. Ad as I did, I was absolutely captivated by the perso of Jesus of Nazareth. Meawhile, Sady itroduced me to other Christia studets. They were livig life o a plae of reality that I did t eve dream existed, ad it imparted a deep meaig ad joy to their lives, which I craved. My spiritual search wet o for the ext six moths. 5 North Coutry Notebook Opiio / Obituaries A5 Ice, ice, it s everywhere, just what you eed for a drik By Joh Harriga Columist Editor's ote: Mr. Harriga was uable to submit a ew colum i time to meet our press deadlie for this week's editio. The followig North Coutry Notebook colum was origially published i May of last year. I was just begiig a woderful circular drive aroud the North Coutry this past Wedesday whe, at the wester approach to Dixville Notch, I came across a chuk of ice. Across is probably the wrog word, because this fragmet of glacier was ot i the road, but istead cligig teaciously to a small cliff, like a limpet mie o the hull of a ship. For some reaso, this remided me of a oft-repeated statemet by Warre Pearso, logtime skimeister at New Hampshire s orthermost ski area, The Wilderess, ear where I ecoutered the ice. Oe of his frustratios was how to get the word out to skiers dow south that log after most other ski areas had shut dow for the seaso, The Wilderess still had plety of sow. It s hard to covice people mowig their laws i Bosto that we still have plety of sow, was his succict way of puttig it. Warre had the clipped accet of wester Maie, ot the better kow Doweast drawl, ad did t mice words. Further east, over the lip of the otch ad coastig dow ito the Adroscoggi draiage toward Maie, there was still plety more sow ad ice i the rubble of rock o the floor of the otch, where the su hardly shies at all. Not that this is the oly place sow ad ice ca still be foud i orther or high-coutry New Hampshire. There are plety of places, i plety of climes, where relics of witer will hag o well ito early Jue, ad still other places Joh Harriga This flyig goose huk of ice was more like a octopus, clutchig at a rock face west of Dixville Notch, where the rays of the climbig su will ultimately shoot it dow. that will liger loger. Durig my hikig days, whe I kew may of the Appalachia Moutai Club s hut crews o a first-ame basis, oe of my favorite destiatios was Carter Notch Hut, situated i a high valley tucked behid Wildcat Moutai. You reached it via Carter Dome, a lightig-proe bald pate of glacier-scraped bedrock featurig a heart-stoppig descet to a covivial supper ad a warm buk for the ight. There is a ice-cave there just beyod the hut, aliged i such a way that the sow packs i there, drive by the fierce orthwest wids, but the su barely peetrates eve o the logest days of summer. Ad back i there, as the cave s mii-glacier slowly recedes, hikers ad hut-keepers alike keep stuff that ll spoil or they just wat kept cool---butter, milk, ad of course beer. At Pittsburg s Boudary Pod, at 2,335 feet oe of the state s highest pods reachable (almost) by road, a famous deposit of sow ad ice ca usually be foud southeast of the dam, well ito high summer ad sometimes beyod. Geeratios of people who ve fished there have kow about it, for good reaso. If you pla to cook before the eveig rise, for istace, ad eed your cooler ad ice for the boat (wik, udge), you ca scamper dow below the dam ad put your other spoilables o a ice little glacier of compacted sow. Boudary, by the way, i times of yore kow as Moutai Pod, is the pod o which famed local pilot Harry Scott vowed to lad his float plae (ad of course take off agai) but waited early a lifetime for the right coditios to do it. This is a pod where the Caadia orthwesterlies blow fiercely most of the time, havig attaied awesome speed crossig the mostly ope ad flat coutryside of the Easter Towships of souther Quebec. They the smash ito the remats of the Appalachia Moutais that form the boudary, ad crash up ad over, of course, CONWAY, S.C. Harry always bega his seteces with a barely discerable whistle. Oe time Dave Cook ad I were uder the dim cofies of a big spruce tree there at Boudary, havig bee blow ashore by the usual tempest, ad gradually our pupils dilated so that we could perceive the outlies of aother creature uder there, ad it became Harry, seekig the same shelter. 14 Sports B2 Devo Kraemer-Roberts gets a tag o a Belmot ruer i actio o May 8. Nate Tucker takes a lead off third base durig his team s game with Belmot last week. Belmot proves to be too much for baseball Bears BY Sports Editor BRISTOL Eve before his team s game with Belmot o Moday, May 8, Newfoud baseball coach Joh Larse was aware of the challege i frot of his boys. That challege was made eve more difficult by the fact that the Raiders were throwig their ace, Cole Cotigiai. This is goig to test our mettle, Larse said prior to the start of the game. As it turs out, he was right, as the Bears, who etered the week with a sparklig 5-1 record, could t get aythig goig agaist Cotigiai ad the Raiders ad also could t stifle Belmot s powerful offese, droppig a 9-1 decisio to the Raiders. That s oe of the best teams i our Divisio, i my opiio, Larse offered. That s a class ball club, they do everythig right. Newfoud had some chaces alog the way after the Raiders got out to a 2-0 lead. I the bottom of the secod iig, Devo Kraemer-Roberts beat out a ifield hit ad Rya Coughli followed with a base hit to put two ruers o with obody out. However, a grouder up the middle tured ito a 6-3 double play ad the a fly ball to left eded the iig with obody crossig the plate. Belmot got to Newfoud starter Loga Rouille i the top of the third iig, as the Newfoud defese did t offer up tos of help to the pitcher. After a leadoff walk, a lie drive to ceter retired the ext batter. The ext batter grouded to Kraemer-Roberts at third base. He threw to secod hopig to start a double play, but Nate Desrochers took the throw ad just missed the bag. Though he was able to throw through ad get the out at first, the lead ruer stayed at secod. Aother error allowed Belmot to score its third ru ad the a bloop hit plated the fourth ru. Belmot the got two more hits, sadwiched aroud a walk, ad the lead ballooed to 6-0 before Rouille got a groudout to Kraemer-Roberts at third to ed the iig. Rouille led off the bottom of the third iig with a base hit ad the Nate Tucker beat out a but for a base hit. Matt Mickewicz reached o a error to load the bases with obody out. Cotigiai came back ad got a strikeout for the first out of the iig but a groudout to first by Ricky DeLuca brought home Rouille with the first ru of the game for Newfoud. However, the other two ruers were straded o base. Belmot kept chippig away ad added three more rus to the scoreboard. Mickewicz came o ad pitched the fial two iigs i relief for Newfoud. The Bears were uable to get aythig else agaist Cotigiai, who wet the distace o the moud for the wi. While ot thrilled with the loss, Larse oted that last year s game with Belmot was a completely differet story, so he sees improvemet. We lost 26-0 to them last year with basically the same crew, Larse said. We kew they poud the ball ad we kew they do t make errors. Larse also oted that the 5-1 record headig ito the week certaily meat that the Bears had a target o their backs to the other teams. We ve got that target ad we have to expect that we ll see people s umber oe pitcher, Larse poited out. He also oted that his team should t rely o the pitcher to carry the load all the time either. Loga did t have his best stuff today, Larse said. But we ca t expect him to carry us every day. Matt (Mickewicz) pitched very well for the last two iigs, Larse added. The Bears came back the ext day ad dropped a 11-1 decisio o the road at Berli. Next up, Newfoud will be at Raymod o Saturday, May 20, at 10:30 a.m. before returig home to host Berli o Moday, May 22, ad Steves o Wedesday, May 24, both at 4:30 p.m. Joshua Spauldig ca be reached at or sportsgs@salmopress. com. Takig my Survivor love out of the coutry for a day People who read this colum o a regular basis kow of my love for Survivor. I ve used this love as a excuse to travel aroud the coutry. I liste to former Survivor Rob Cesterio s podcast, Rob Has A Podcast (RHAP) ad his live evets have become a must-atted for me. Over the past few years, I ve made six trips to New York City for live shows, plus a couple of trips to Los Ageles, oe to Reo ad oe to Chicago. Last week, the love of the game ad my love of RHAP took me out of the coutry for the first time i a log time. The last time I left the coutry was for the Olympics i 2014 but whe Rob aouced o a podcast that he was hostig a evet i Toroto, I bought a ticket ad started plaig. Like most of my RHAP trips, I had to keep it relatively short, sice my work commitmets would t allow me to miss too much time ad missig more tha a day of work really puts me behid whe it comes to the thigs I eed to do. With my ew work- SPORTING CHANCE By out ad diet program, I thought this trip might be a bit more difficult ad it was. I order to get the proper daily workout i, I got up at 2 a.m., did the workout ad the cooked breakfast at 2:45 a.m. Because of the food requiremets throughout the day, I loaded up o the breakfast because I kew I d have few opportuities while flyig to eat the right foods. I left the house just before 3:15 a.m. ad made the trip south to Dover, where I caught the 4:30 a.m. bus to Loga Airport. My biggest cocer was that passig through iteratioal security ad/ or customs might be difficult, but this was by far the easiest time I ve ever had goig through security. There was o lie at the gates at Loga ad whe I got to Toroto, there was o lie at customs either, which was fatastic. I had t bee to Toroto sice my sophomore year bad trip i high school ad I came away impressed with the city. I wet up the CN Tower ad got a great look at the city from above before spedig a good chuk of the afteroo waderig aroud ear the Lake Otario waterfrot. I maaged to get STEPHEN FISHBACH (left) ad Rob Cesterio discuss the latest episode of Survivor at the RHAP live evet last week i Toroto. some somewhat healthy food for luch ad agai at dier before headig to the show. This RHAP show was a bit differet, sice it took place i a hotel ballroom, but we got to watch a great episode of Survivor ad had a great discussio of the episode with Rob ad cohost Stephe Fishbach, alog with former Survivors Bret LaBelle ad Shiri Oskooi ad reowed Survivor jouralist Josh Wigler, who is oe of my alltime favorite people i the Survivor uiverse ad oe of the icest people you could ask for, to boot. I had a really early flight out of Toroto o Thursday morig, so I headed back to the airport (there s a great trai ruig from the airport to the city) late o Wedesday ight/ Thursday morig ad www. SalmoPress.com crashed for a bit o the airport floor. If I thought the trip through security ad customs was easy comig i to Caada, it was almost as easy goig back. The US allowed us to clear customs i Toroto ad the security ad customs were basically empty at 3:45 a.m. so it wet pretty quickly. We laded after 8 a.m. ad I caught the bus orth to Dover ad was back to work just after oo, i time for the Prospect Moutai baseball ad softball games. It was great to take my love of Survivor out of the coutry for a few hours ad I look forward to the ext trip. Fially, have a great day Doa Rhodes.
