FREE ECIO program offers Northfield studets a glimpse at Native America culture BY DONNA RHODES drhode@salmopress.com NORTHFIELD There was a heartwarmig cultural exchage betwee Northfield ad the tow of Wouded Kee, South Dakota last week whe represetatives of Every Child Is Ours retured to the area to meet with the studets of Uio-Sabor ad Southwick Schools, who are also takig part i the atioal program that supports youg boys ad girls. ECIO was fouded by Ja Paschal, a former teacher of the Wiisquam School District, after she was asked by Presidet Bill Clito i the 1990 s to be his U.S. Secretary of Educatio for the Northeaster Regio of the Uited States. Through ECIO, Pascal was able to create a uique partership betwee schools ad commuities all across the atio. The missio of her program is to provide studets with thigs they eed i order to be successful i school, provide healthy utritio whe eeded, ad brig about greater cultural awareess. To help meet some of those goals, the Board of Directors for ECIO have successfully partered with atioal busiesses such as Walmart to supply disadvataged childre with ot oly clothig but backpacks filled with food for weeked luches ad sacks. Last fall, Uio-Sabor ad Southwick schools joied i the ECIO etwork, where they ve had the opportuity to lear more about childre their age i other parts of the coutry. Fourth graders at Southwick bega a pe pal relatioship with some of the schools, ad eve had a olie Skype ecouter with a school i rural Arkasas, where the program is based. It was May 8 of this year before Pascal retured to Wiisquam Regioal School District, though, ad studets actually came face to face with represetatives from oe of those schools. Our board members have come here today from all aroud the coutry, ad we brought with us a few of the woderful Sioux Idias of South Dakota. You really could t meet ay more beautiful people, Pascal said. Represetig the studets of Wouded Kee Elemetary School was their pricipal Alice Phelps, her fifth grade so Jaro ad oe of her sixth grade studets, Molia Apple. Trees, rivers ad lakes were a big attractio to the visitors from Wouded Kee sice they do t have the lush foliage of the Northeast. Because of their harsher eviromet, the area is ecoomically depressed ad curretly has a 97-percet uemploymet rate. The earest grocery store is more tha a hour drive away ad food is a big issue for may residets. Provisios supplied i the ECIO backpack program, Phelps said, at least allow her studets to go home with utritioal foods for the weeked. Our childre are umber oe to us, ad we thak Every Child Is Ours for brigig food ito our homes, she said. Besides other discussios about her school, the visit was also a opportuity for New Hampshire studets to become more familiar with the Native Amer- ica culture, which is domiat i Wouded Kee. As a special treat, Jaro ad she sag a traditioal Sioux sog, iteded to brig ecouragemet to youth ad help them reach their goals i life. It was a sog she felt was relevat to the missio of ECIO. Everythig we do is for you, said Phelps. A traditioal Jigle Dace followed the sigig ad the boys ad girls were spellboud as Phelps daced before them i a circle, idicative of everythig i life beig itercoected accordig to the Native America culture. As she daced, Phelps wore a traditioal ceremoial costume she herself made uder her gradmother s guidace. It was covered with delicate stitchig, beadwork ad dozes of bells. This is a healig dress, she explaied to the studets. Armed with that iformatio, detectives served search warrats o a residece o Primrose Drive i Tilto. Durig that search, they cofiscated several items, icludig electroic evidece deemed pertiet to the reported crimes. After iterviewig the mior victims, [detectives] leared the offeses occurred betwee Jauary ad November of 2014, Chief Robert Cormier said i a press release o Moday. As a result of their ivestigatios, 30-year-old Eric Sellar was arrested at that time for Aggravat- Servig all of New Hampshire for over 40 years.
