2 2 WORD FROM THE CEO Sice becomig Metrolik s CEO, oe of my top priorities is, ad will cotiue to be, havig a active, ogoig dialogue with you, our riders. I strogly believe that through cotiual discussio with you, we ca istitute chages to our service that best meet your eeds ad the eeds of the railroad. Last year, we lauched the Customer Coect program. Each week, a Metrolik maager speds several hours at Uio Statio or a Metrolik statio out i the field talkig to passegers about their commets ad cocers relatig to our service, ad the reports that iput back to me. We have also coveed three Rider Advisory Groups to get eve more detailed feedback from our passegers, ad so far we ve received extremely valuable iput from Metrolik riders. I July, we took Customer Coect to a ew level by lauchig a social media versio of the program. O July 10 ad 24, we held two customer egagemet chats o Facebook i which riders asked questios of our staff. I wat to thak those of you who cotributed with your thoughtful iteractios. It s through a ope dialogue like this that we ca lear what matters to you most. I these sessios, daily issues such as service expasio ad schedule adjustmets were the most promietly discussed. We ot oly wat to hear what you thik of our service today, but we also eed your ideas o how we ca make Metrolik a eve more effective service i the future. This sprig, we sought iput from our riders whe we lauched our log-rage Strategic Pla process. Hudreds of riders have filled out surveys ad provided us valuable isights ito their priorities for our future. May commets were about icreasig frequecy of trais ad expadig service throughout the day ad ito the weeked. Others suggested ways to adjust the quality of service, reduce delays, icrease trai speed, ad reduce prices. We also received ideas about improvig coectios with buses ad extedig rail service beyod our service area. Whe the ext phase of the Strategic Pla process begis, we will eed to hear from you durig that effort as well. Very soo, we will be developig a series of visio scearios outliig differet paths our system ad service ca take, ad we eed you to weigh i with your opiio of those scearios. 3 3 ON THE COVER LOS ANGELES UNION STATION MASTER PLAN UNVEILED O the heels of celebratig Uio Statio s 75th aiversary last May, Metro recetly held a ope house to promote the Uio Statio Master Pla. The pla is desiged to preserve the architectural beauty of Uio Statio as it prepares the civic ico to meet the growig trasportatio demads of the 21st cetury. With early 70,000 people usig the statio o a average weekday a umber that s expected to grow to 100,000 by 2020, ad to 140,000 users by 2040 Metro has bee workig o a pla to improve how the statio fuctios to promote the seamless coectios amog all modes of trasportatio. The Master Pla would also expad gree space at the statio, accommodate potetial developmet that would work alogside the bus ad trai statio, ad trasform Uio Statio ito a complete travel destiatio. Metro purchased the Uio Statio property i 2011, icludig 47 acres of surroudig lad. The statio curretly serves Metrolik, Amtrak, Metro Rail, ad Metro ad muicipal buses, ad it is beig prepared to accommodate Califoria High-Speed Rail as well. SOME DETAILS OF THE MASTER PLAN INCLUDE: A ew passeger cocourse that will greatly expad the existig passageway. The cocourse will be sigificatly wider tha the existig -- ad ofte crowded -- pedestria passageway. There will also be elevators ad stairs accessig each of the rail platforms above. These rail platforms will be wideed from 23 feet to approximately 30 feet. The locatio of the curret etraces to the Metro Red/Purple Lie ad the Metro Gold Lie will remai the same. Metro also plas to elimiate a log-stadig track way bottleeck i a project that is separate, but complemetary, to the Uio Statio Master Pla. Curretly, Uio Statio is a dead-ed for Metrolik ad Amtrak trais sice all trais must eter ad exit via tracks o the orth side of the facility. Metro s Souther Califoria Regioal Itercoector Project (SCRIP) ow i its evirometal ad egieerig phase would Artist rederig of Los Ageles Uio Statio east etrace. allow trais to eter ad exit the statio via the south side by ruig four tracks over the 101 freeway ad coectig to the existig tracks alog the Los Ageles River. The tracks would improve trai capacity at Uio Statio by 40 to 50 percet, accordig to Metro. The project also gives Metro the chace to make improvemets to the rail yard ad the cocourse below. The Master Pla also examies the possibility of locatig a high-speed rail termial either below or above Viges Street, o the east side of the Uio Statio. Two pedestria ad bicycle bridges would also spa the rail yard to better coect the easter ad wester sides of the Uio Statio property, offerig stuig views of the dowtow skylie. I the shorter-term, other improvemets are i the works. A ew restaurat is expected to be aouced soo for the old Uio Bagel locatio ear the west etrace to Uio Statio. Discussios are also uderway for ew restaurats i the old ticket room ad Fred Harvey House. Aother short-term project would ivolve replacig the parkig lot i frot of Uio Statio with a civic plaza that could iclude outdoor restaurat seatig ad a wide esplaade alog Alameda Street for pedestrias ad cyclists.
