MEETING N.76 MONDAY 17 OCTOBER 2016, cmmencing at 7.10pm Blackwd Railway Statin MINUTES WELCOME - BAG President, Andrew Tidswell welcmed everyne, especially new attendees. GUEST PRESENTATION: TOM WILSON Histry f public transprt in the Hills and Mitcham area Chair, Andrew intrduced Tm wh infrmed meeting that he has always had a keen interest in trains, trams and buses - and can remember the thrill f riding n trams at a very early age, when he lived in Malvern.. Emplyed by DTEI fr many years, Tm was part f the team which designed the O- Bahn and later the extensin f the Glenelg trams dwn King William Street t Nrth Terrace. (He rde n the first test tram n the extensin at 1.00am a great thrill). Tm prvided an excellent Pwer Pint Presentatin cmmencing with images f hrse-drawn trams as early as 1878, when Adelaide basted the largest netwrk f tramlines in Australia attributed t the flat terrain.. The presentatin included early phts f King William Street in the City plus dubledecker hrse trams, many different steam trains and electric trams and sme f the first buses t be intrduced n the ften quite narrw rads (particularly in the hills). Of interest t many were the shts f sundry railway crssings frm the early days and the cnstructin f tunnels. The tw different Glenelg train services frm King William St befre the electric trams, was an interesting piece f histry, ften verlked. Images f the varius tram terminuses at Clarence Park, Hyde Park, Mitcham, Kingswd and Fullartn/Springfield brught back memries fr many. Tm was able t prvide a number f dates relative t the Blackwd Statin s histry he was directly invlved in the intrductin f the Bus Interchange at the Blackwd statin in Tm prvided a fascinating and humrus cmmentary dwn memry lane - with many questins being asked frm the attendees. Chairpersn, Andrew thanked Tm fr his great presentatin and wealth f knwledge n all aspects f Adelaide s public transprt system and presented him with a gift - and a lcal histry bk in appreciatin. 3. 2 4. GENERAL BUSINESS:. 4.1 HISTORY GROUP Anne Hazell reprted nly five histry bks had been sld in recent weeks. Miles Badcck (The Blackwd Times Ed.) has indicated there is a real cult fllwing fr BAG s histrical articles each mnth. The current emphasis has been n sprting Clubs cricket, ftball and glf. The next editin will reveal the activities f wmen in 1915 Anne sught suggestins fr additinal; themes fr 2017 articles. Plans are prgressing n Walks fr Eden Hills and a car tur f varius histric sites has been suggested. The Walks Arund Blackwd, cancelled in May due t the weather, have been rescheduled fr Sunday 30 Octber.. Further Walks are being planned fr Histry Mnth next year.. Anne then spke passinately abut a suggestin recently raised in Cuncil f disbanding the Blackwd Ty Library. She urged everyne t vice their disapprval f this prpsed clsure which she cnsiders is purely a cstcutting measure which wuld affect s many yung families in the Mitcham Hills. 4.2 STREETSCAPE and GARDEN ACTIVITIES. Nan indicated she had spken t Mark Winstn (Cuncil s Hrticulture Manager) requesting the rather sad-lking Blackwd Rundabut be lked at. She is fully aware that Cuncil s Garden Staff wuld be under pressure cleaning up after the recent strms. The Dnatin Tins in varius shps are all ding very well. BAG appreciates the supprt being shwn by residents thrugh this fund-raising initiative. Geff infrmed Meeting that, fllwing numerus requests, the upgrading wrk n the pedestrian path adjacent t the Red Hens was carried ut last week. Of the apprx. 800 large (dnated) pavers stacked in Blackwd Hill Reserve he cnsiders apprx. 500 will be used arund the Histric Cmmemrative Table and Old Farmhuse ruin site (including a paved pathway t the cttage), anther 40 culd be laid alngside the galvanised shed at Blackwd Statin. The Big Pink Geraniums in the Wlwrths Car Park Planter Bxes have nw been pruned, cmpsted and given a dse f Wetta Sil - which shuld give them a gd start fr the summer. They are all lking quite healthy. The stlen Lavender and Aggie in Barty s Park have been replaced and signs aimed at shaming the perpetratr, attached t the eucalypt. Geff advised that sme areas arund the shpping precincts are lking untidy - due t the large amunt f weed grwth frm the prlnged winter rains. He suggested it may be an idea t kick-start the Blackwd Garden Gnmes cncept (which was the riginal prject undertaken when BAG was first frmed) 4.3 BLACKWOOD STATION New Cafe Prpsal Andrew advised The Artisan Cafe will be entering int a cntract with DPTI fr a Cafe invlving a shared use arrangement with BAG t enable us t cnduct ur Meetings etc. Heather (Artisans C-wner) is due t meet with DPTI Officer shrtly All gd. New meeting with DPTI CEO: Andrew advised the planned meeting with the CEO f DPTI (Mr. Michael Deegan) n 30 September was called ff at the last minute due t the fldwater cncerns in the Barssa/Gawler regin.. The meeting has nw been re-scheduled fr mid Nv. when it is planned t cnduct a walking tur f the Blackwd Statin precinct 2

We have been infrmed that Mr. Deegan is keen t meet with us. Watch this space MITCHAM COUNCIL MATTERS Lindy Taeuber reprted n a number f matters The Messenger Press has recently decided t cease prductin f the Mitcham & Hills Messenger and has re-arranged distributin areas The eastern Hills suburbs will be included in The Eastern Curier, Bellevue Heights and Eden Hills will receive the Cast City Weekly. It culd be that Hme Deliveries f the Eastern Curier t Belair, Blackwd etc will be phased ut next year due t very little advertising revenue cming int the paper frm Mitcham Hills businesses. If this ccurs papers will be available at supermarkets. The hme delivery f the Cast City Weekly is anticipated t remain. These different papers and ptential delivery changes create a prblem fr Cuncil's distributin f infrmatin via the Messenger. Cmmunity Gardens has been raised again. Cuncil has prepared a plicy t fund small prjects n Cuncil land r nn-cuncil land and pssibly sme larger prjects (which wuld need Full Cuncil apprval) Ty Libraries - Cuncil is cnsidering the clsure f the Blackwd Ty Library (in the Yung Street Cmmunity Centre) and pssibly merging the facility with the Mitcham Ty Library (als lcated in separate site frm public library). Bth Blackwd and Mitcham public libraries are t small t accmmdate a Ty Library but there is a cnsiderable staff cst invlved in their peratin. It was suggested that maybe ne f the lcal Churches culd be invlved prviding vlunteers. Ecnmic Develpment Strategy. This is a new area f interest fr Mitcham Cuncil but ther neighburing Cuncils seem very keen t discuss partnering arrangements. Data is currently being cllected and Cuncil is endeavuring t engage with lcal Businesses. A business engagement frum t be held first part f The big Strm Event The clean-up frm the recent extrardinary strm damage has put Cuncil staff under pressure. In additin t the Brwn Hill Creek flding many Cuncil Reserves were sdden resulting in a delay in undertaking day t day maintenance wrk. In the circumstances Cuncil staff rallied t the cause and handled the situatin very well. Pririty nw is preparing fr the bush fire seasn. Traffic matters Public cnsultatins have nw been cmpleted n Blackwd Suth (Brightn Parade) traffic calming prpsals. Watahuna Avenue and Winns Rad traffic cncerns being investigated. Cr. Jane Bange Lindy advised that Cr. Bange (the new Park Ward Elected Member), has nw been swrn in and finished her inductin. Her experience frm having previusly wrked in NSW Lcal Gvernment has greatly assisted her settling in prcess. 4.5 CHRISTMAS RED BOWS Geff advised that 26 vlunteers helped ut at the Red Bws wrkshp in the Blackwd Cmmunity Centre n Saturday 8 th Octber. It was a great effrt. The Red Bw packs are nw stred in the railway shed - ready fr sale t the public at the same price ($5.00 fr 3metres f material). 3

4 4.5 CHRISTMAS RED BOWS cnt d The Red Bw packs will be available fr purchase frm the weekend f the Adelaide Christmas Pageant (12 th Nvember) at Habitat Blackwd (Fdland S/C), NewsXpress Blackwd (Wlwrths S/C) r Lcal Member Sam Duluk s Office (Yung Street). BAG vlunteers will nce again be tying Bws alng the Main Rd. 4.6 CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL UPDATE Andrew reprted, in Pauline Ddd s absence, that everything is ging accrding t plan, with a full huse f Christmas Trees, table decratins etc. He indicated that Pauline wuld like sme mre Santas - if anyne feels they can fit the bill? Mre details next mnth. 4.7 BAG AGM 21 st Nvember Andrew advised BAG Cmmittee Nminatin Frms fr 2017 will be available after Tnight s meeting and n-line. The AGM Meeting will nt have a Guest Speaker but, in additin t the President s Annual Reprt, there will be a Pwer Pint Presentatin cvering BAG s activities &Events fr 2016 and sme f the exciting plans fr Andrew indicated that he will be stepping dwn frm the President s Psitin after five years at the helm. 4.8 CHRISTMAS PAGEANT & FAIR Geff cnfirmed that BAG will again be participating in this year s Christmas Pageant with ur banner, fllwed by a Christmas tree (rganised by the Cmmunity Links Grup). BAG s traditinal Sausage Sizzle will be cnducted again and the usual site has been requested. Bev and Peter Manthey have agreed t prvide Chicken Wings as well. Final plans will be annunced at next BAG meeting. 4.9 COMMUNITY EVENTS Jhn Ellitt annunced that the Hills Chral Sciety cncert was t be held next Sunday at Church f St Clumbus, Crss Rad, Hawthrn - cmmencing 2.30 pm. Liz Sawyer advised that she has arranged fr a large display f Christmas-related artefacts t be n shw at the Mitcham Civic Centre, Belair Rad - frm Mnday 7 th Nvember t Friday 23 rd December. There will be an pprtunity t prmte the Christmas Tree Festival and ther BAG activities. Geff reminded attendees f the Fdland Cmmunity Dllars Prgram and encuraged peple t use the relative tags every time they shp at Drakes Fdland. This cncept is a great fund-raiser fr BAG s Greening f Blackwd prjects. Nan Davies infrmed meeting that she has been invited t meet the new Directr f the Adelaide Btanic Gardens, Dr. Lucy Sutherland. Trevr Christensen, when asked by Nan t prvide a brief prfile n Dr. Sutherland, advised she is well-qualified with internatinal experience; has a PhD in Ec Turism; is currently the Natinal Directr f the Australian Seed Bank Partnership, has been Acting Directr at the Australian Natinal Btanic Gardens in Canberra and lectured in the U.K. fr several years in related fields. He cnsiders Dr. Sutherland t be a wrkahlic intelligent and easy t get alng with. 4
