High Hpes fr Clrad includes tw prgrams: High Hpes fr Wunded Warrirs and High Hpes fr Teens Wh is Peak Aviatin Center: Allen Al Mathews and Pat Carlile wn Peak Aviatin Center, a flight schl here in Clrad Springs. Pat is a retired Army aviatr and Al retired frm the Air Frce. In early 2008 Pat ffered Al the pprtunity t partner with him, primarily t start the High Hpes prgram. They bth recgnized the sacrifices ur warrirs and their families have made and wanted t d smething meaningful fr them with the resurces they had, in additin they knew that aviatin culd be a pwerful transfrmatinal experience fr at risk and disadvantaged yuth yuth wh have been repeatedly tld that due t their race r sex r neighbrhd they culdn t amunt t anything, but, and these are the yuth they reach ut t, there are sme f these yuth wh d believe they can escape their sci-ecnmic situatin. S, they began flying wunded warrirs and held the first pen huse fr High Schl students in late Since then, they ve intrduced well ver 200 yuth t aviatin and given n cst flights t ver 500 sldiers and their family members. Wunded Warrirs: Flight Training and Scenic Flights Flight Training: Starting in 2012, Wunded Warrirs have been identified by the Warrir Transitin Unit cunselrs and therapists fr flight training twards a Private Pilt s License. Fur sldiers are actively taking flight lessns in Peak Aviatin Center s Flight Design CT light sprt aircraft. Over a dzen sldiers have submitted their applicatins fr the Flight Training prgram but the prgram is limited t fur sldiers flying at ne time. Several f the initial applicants began flight training but fr varius reasns, including medical issues, relcatins, etc. were unable t cntinue in the training s ther applicants tk their place t keep the number f participants at fur. The sldier s cunselrs have reprted the psitive imprvements they have bserved in the sldiers; especially in their interpersnal relatinships, anger management, and ability t fcus n tasks all issues faced by sldiers suffering frm Pst Traumatic Stress Disrder (PTSD). The flight lessns are perfrmed in ne f Peak Aviatin Center s Flight Design CT aircraft. In 2012, the sldiers flew ver 60 hurs in 53 training flights, which cst High Hpes fr Clrad ver $7600. One has sled and is very clse t cmpleting his Private Pilt license requirements. The thers are very clse t flying sl. 2 High Hpes fr Clrad The Wunded Warrir Pilts are all flight instructrs and mst are retired military. Al is the Air Frce guy, Pat is a retired Army aviatr and Jim Van Namee is a retired Navy fighter pilt. In additin, Jhn Clare- Pantn, the Peak Aviatin Center chief flight instructr, is a retired Ryal Air Frce fighter pilt. Scenic Flights: Over the Clrad Springs area, such as Ryal Grge and Garden f the Gds, t Wunded Warrirs and their family members. Over 500 since 2008 at n cst t the sldiers. A mment t get away frm it all ; An adrenal rush like flying helps me relax In Octber 2008, after mnths f effrt, Butts AAF and the Warrir Transitin Unit gave apprval fr Peak Aviatin aircraft t fly int and ut f Butts. They are the nly civilian flight peratin allwed t land there. First Sergeants, cunselrs, and utreach crdinatrs frm Ft Carsn Warrir Transitin Units crdinate the flights. They have heard frm sldiers f the psitive change seen in sme sldiers after ne flight, but they re nt trained t evaluate any behaviral changes; they just prvide the pprtunity. Families talk f the flights as a great way fr sldiers t recnnect. One cmbat veteran s eight year ld sn sat in the cpilt s seat; after the flight the sldier was visibly mved, repeating hw he never imagined he wuld see his sn pilt an airplane. The primary aircraft fr Wunded Warrir scenic flights is Peak Aviatin Center s Cessna 182RG, a 4 seat general aviatin aircraft. This aircraft csts apprximately $110 per flight hur t perate and each scenic flight lasts apprximately 45 minutes. Over 200 yuth have attended since 2008 Turs f the AF Academy, the Clrad Springs airprt terminal, the COS Air Traffic Cntrl facilities and ther airprt lcatins fr High Schl students. Grund schls fr Zebuln Pike Yuth Services Center students are cnducted by Skywest pilts. Orientatin flights at the cnclusin f Grund Schl in Peak Aviatin Center Cessna 172 and Flight Design CT trainers Fur yuth are currently taking flight lessns: Tw yuth are finishing their Private Pilt License requirements and preparing fr the Air Frce Academy. Anther is abut t fly Sl. Andre Yung was just ntified that he has been accepted int the USAFA Class f 2017 and will start his freshmen year this summer. All students fill ut an applicatin which includes a cntract stating they will stay: Out f truble In Schl (with gd grades apprpriate t their abilities), and Away frm drugs and alchl All students als agree t take care f the airplanes they fly by cleaning them as well as help ut in ther ways arund the airprt. Harrisn High Schl Jr ROTC Cadets f the Quarter are rewarded with a High Hpes flight. High Hpes fr Clrad supprt: It csts High Hpes fr Clrad at least $6,000 fr each sldier r yuth t cmplete their flight training. Jeppesen and Gleim dnate private pilt kits fr the sldiers. High Hpes prgram funding has been prvided by Peak Aviatin Center, Pikes Peak 99s, the Giving Hearts Club, USAA, Ent FCU, Nrthrup Grumman, as well as many generus individuals. The annual Festival f Lights/High Hpes fr Clrad glf turnament is a majr fund raiser fr High Hpes prgrams. Wunded Warrirs are spnsred t play as part f the fursmes. I am srry that I have been ut f the lp lately, but it has been exceedingly busy arund here lately. We received 300 additinal wunded, ill, r injured Sldiers last week. Respectfully, Brett D. Kelley CPT, IN Cmmanding K CO, 1 12 IN, 4IBCT, 4ID Greetings Mr Matthews, 1) I really appreciated yur time, patience and the instructin that yu gave my children and myself. The minr details yu pinted ut t us were valuable and allwed us t cmprehend the inner wrking f an airplane. My children still talk abut this adventure and have becme mre invlved in utilizing their micrsft flight simulatr games and are able t recall the instructin yu gave befre during and after the warrir flights (checklist). 2) I dn't have anything t cmment n that I think that shuld be imprved; as far as I am cncerned yur crdinating with Ms Allen and the SFAC is a great imprvement as she has a greater stage t recruit participants t take future flights and she has better cntrl f getting sldiers t attend. The Warrir Transitin BN has als taken the lead by ensuring that if a Sldier signs up fr a flight and d nt shw it will be treated as if they missed an appintment and ding s will lead t extra duty and r UCMJ actin. 3) Everything went accrding t plan and I was amazed at the efficiency and attentiveness f the staff at the airprt center and the spectacular views frm the plane. 4) Sir this is a valuable service and I encurage yu t keep ding what it is that yu d fr these sldiers and their families. It wuld be great if yu culd meet with sme f these warrirs frm the aviatin field and encurage them t vlunteer at the airfield and r becme staff at the airprt. SFC Jimmie L.
