MacInnis, VP] Plicy Cape Bretn University believes in the imprtance f first aid t prtect the health and safety f emplyees, students and the general Cape Bretn University cmmunity. Cape Bretn University cmmits t cmply with the Nva Sctia Occupatinal Health and Safety First Aid Regulatins, including prvisin f training, supplies and mnitring f injuries. All emplyees are encuraged t take first aid training. Prcedure Training will be ffered t be cnducted at least twice per year and sessins will be held prvided there is a minimum number f participants scheduled t attend. This training will be at the minimum level f the standard first aid certificate. Apprpriate first aid trainers wuld include: Trainees Max Bell Centre Nurse (if trained and certified t teach first aid) Outside cntractr (if trained and certified t teach first aid) Outside prvider such as St. Jhn Ambulance r Red Crss Vlunteer CBU trainers, having received train the trainer curse Or by any ther rganizatin apprved by the Department f Labur and Wrkfrce Develpment. A letter will be sent by Human Resurces t Deans, Directrs, Managers and Supervisrs, with a cpy t Chairs, every year requesting at least tw peple frm each department be trained in first aid, taking int cnsideratin that each department ensures at least ne persn n every shift is trained. Als t be cnsidered is that training is mandatry fr any emplyee wh is required t wrk alne. Department(s) with limited numbers f emplyees may be gruped tgether accrding t lcatin, ensuring adequate cverage. The Deans, Directrs, Managers and Supervisrs will make every effrt t ensure fulfilling the first aid training requirement. Chemistry, Bilgy, Nursing, Physics Departments and ther labs where physical hazards exist are encuraged t have all lab persnnel trained in first aid. Cape Bretn University Page 1 f 5 First Aid Plicy

2 Facilities Management emplyees are encuraged t have first aid training but it is mandatry fr: Maintenance Heating Plant Operatrs Canada Games Cmplex Staff Cmmissinaires Training is als mandatry fr any ther emplyee wh is required t wrk alne. All Student Services emplyees are encuraged t have first aid training but it is mandatry fr: Staff wh wrk in the Student Service Centre (Registrar s Office) AED & CPR Training AED & CPR training will be made available t all thse taking the first aid curses. AED and CPR training is mandatry annually fr staff in the fllwing areas: Cmmissinaires Cape Bretn Health Recreatin Cmplex (CBHRC) Staff Canada Games Cmplex Staff Facilities Management Staff wh wrk in the Student Service Centre (Registrar s Office) First Aid Kits A first aid kit shuld be lcated and easily accessible in all cmmn areas f Cape Bretn University which include: Lcatin Cmmissinaire s Office Arseneau-Britten Building, bttm f ramp at 1 st flr (A 128) Campus Centre, Cmmn Area, 2 nd flr Residences, RA Offices Canada Games Centre (Rink) Arseneau-Britten Building, 2 nd flr hallway (near A 221) Maintained by Cmmissinaires Cmmissinaires Cmmissinaires Residence Assistants (RAs) will advise the Residence Life Crdinatr Manager, Canada Games Centre Cmmissinaires Cape Bretn University Page 2 f 5 First Aid Plicy

3 Every department must have at least ne first aid kit and it must be lcated in an area that is easily accessible. Each department is respnsible fr the purchase cst f these kits. Chemistry, Bilgy, Nursing, Physics and ther labs where physical hazards exist are encuraged t have a first aid kit fr each lab. Each department is respnsible fr the purchase cst f these kits. Backbards are prvided in the fllwing areas and shuld be checked n an annual basis during checking f the cmmn area first aid kits: A221 Cmmissinaires 1 st flr Arseneau-Britten Science Building, bttm f ramp Tw wheelchairs are prvided and are lcated: At the Cmmissinaire s statin in Campus Center In the Max Bell Health Centre. Wheelchairs are checked n a regular basis by the Cmmissinaires and Max Bell staff. First Aid Kit Maintenance The Max Bell Centre will maintain a supply f first aid supplies and will crdinate an annual restcking f first aid kits in cmmn areas. Departments r Cmmissinaires may cntact Max Bell Centre fr replenishment as determined by regular checking. Each Departmental Chair, Supervisr r Directr is respnsible fr maintaining and restcking their first aid kits nce per mnth. They may delegate this task t a faculty r staff member if necessary. Each Dean will ensure that the Departmental Chairs, Supervisrs r Directrs maintain their first aid kits n an as needed basis. Cmmissinaires are respnsible fr maintaining and restcking the first aid kits in the cmmn areas nce per mnth r sner if requested. T ensure the first aid kits cntain the apprpriate supplies, a master list f cntents will be attached t the inside cver f each kit. Supplies t restck the kits are available in the Receiving Department thrugh purchase rders. The NS First Aid Regulatin als prvides a list f kit cntents, and is available at but is als prvided belw.
