Wuld yur family be prepared t cpe with the emergency until help arrives? Yur family will cpe best by preparing fr disaster befre it strikes. One way t prepare is by assembling a Disaster Supplies Kit. Once disaster hits, yu wn't have time t shp r search fr supplies. But if yu've gathered supplies in advance, yur family can endure an evacuatin r hme cnfinement. Prepare Yur Kit T prepare yur kit Review the checklists in this dcument. Gather the supplies that are listed. Yu may need them if yur family is cnfined at hme. Place the supplies yu'd mst likely need fr an evacuatin in an easy-t-carry cntainer. Pssible Cntainers Include- Water A large, cvered trash cntainer, A camping backpack, A duffle bag. Stre water in plastic cntainers such as sft drink bttles. Avid using cntainers that will decmpse r break, such as milk cartns r glass bttles. A nrmally active persn needs t drink at least tw quarts f water each day. Ht envirnments and intense physical activity can duble that amunt. Children, nursing mthers and ill peple will need mre. Stre ne galln f water per persn per day (tw quarts fr drinking, tw quarts fr fd preparatin/sanitatin)* Keep at least a three-day supply f water fr each persn in yur husehld. 1
2 Fd Stre at least a three-day supply f nn-perishable fd. Select fds that require n refrigeratin, preparatin r cking and little r n water. If yu must heat fd, pack a can f stern. Select fd items that are cmpact and lightweight. *Include a selectin f the fllwing fds in yur Disaster Supplies Kit: Ready-t-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables Canned juices, milk, sup (if pwdered, stre extra water) Staples--sugar, salt, pepper High energy fds--peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granla bars, trail mix Vitamins Fds fr infants, elderly persns r persns n special diets Cmfrt/stress fds--ckies, hard candy, sweetened cereals, lllipps, instant cffee, tea bags First Aid Kit Assemble a first aid kit fr yur hme and ne fr each car. Keep a smaller versin f the Disaster Supplies Kit in the trunk f yur car. Keep items in air-tight plastic bags. Change yur stred water supply every six mnths s it stays fresh. Rtate yur stred fd every six mnths. Re-think yur kit and family needs at least nce a year. Replace batteries, update clthes, etc. Ask yur physician r pharmacist abut string prescriptin medicatins. 5 Meet with yur family. Discuss the types f disasters that culd ccur. Explain hw t prepare and respnd. Discuss what t d if advised t evacuate. Practice what yu have discussed. Plan hw yur family will stay in cntact if separated by disaster. Pick tw meeting places: 1) a lcatin a safe distance frm yur hme in case f fire. 2) a place utside yur neighbrhd in case yu can't return hme. Chse an ut-f-state friend as a "check-in cntact" fr everyne t call. Cmplete these steps. 1. Pst emergency telephne numbers by every phne. 2.
