1 Italy Gear Checklist & Infrmatin This is a fairly cmprehensive list f items yu will need, sme essential and sme ptinal, and infrmatin relevant t the Italy study abrad. Hwever, this list is intended t accmpany an rientatin where all f the items are explained in mre detail and questins can be answered. Fr sme items listed, there are perfectly acceptable alternatives that are detailed in the rientatin. If in dubt please cntact me prir t making a purchase (dwilsn@mesacc.edu) Make Sure Yu Fllw This Cardinal Rule: TRAVEL LIGHT Equipment and Gear List Phtgraphy: Camera & lenses (35mm equivalent f fcal lengths ) with manual, shutter & aperture pririty. Yu can use a DSLR r mirrrless camera (these have interchangeable lenses). Or yu can use a gd pint and sht (P&S) r bring bth. It depends in yur level f interest and budget. Regardless f camera system, yur camera MUST have the fllwing mdes: manual, shutter and aperture pririty. Batteries: x2 spare sets (x3 sets ttal) f rechargeable & x1 set Li-in as back-up. Memry: 4x16GB cards r mre (yu can use larger r smaller cards, yu ll just need mre than 2 cards, 4 is ideal). If yur camera shts HD vide get hi-speed memry apprpriate frm vide. Cleaning kit Case/bag Mnpd r tripd (ptinal) Flash (external w/spare batteries) (ptinal) GPr r equivalent (cmpletely ptinal, but fun) NB. 2 Cmputer: Laptp - SMALL. Lng battery life is imprtant. Card reader External hard drive r large USB memry stick fr back-up f images G t and dwnlad the bksmart sftware. Phne: Cell phne either yur nrmal phne r get an unlcked GSM cell phne (I can suggest cheap ways f ding this) fr which yu can then purchase a SIM card. This can be a hassle is usually less expensive that using yur wn phne verseas. Yu ll have gd wifi mst places hwever. External rechargeable battery pack fr yur phne. Chargers and crds Clthes: I recmmend yu pack light. Yu will need t carry yur luggage frm transprt t htels. It s a hassle t carry large bags. Carefully think abut what yu need and will actually use. Yu can t bring enugh clthes t last the full trip s yu will need t d laundry at sme pint, s bring less vs mre. Try t avid packing items that yu think might be nice t bring, instead bring items yu knw yu ll need. I suggest yu pack a cmfy set f clths t wear while traveling. It will be ht in Italy, but might als rain. 3 Bags: I seldm if ever travel with a checked bag. I reduce the size and number f everything t fit a single carry-n bag and ne persnal item bag. I pack t the bag limit vs bring bags t accmmdate what I want t bring. If yu need a checked bag, ONLY BRING ONE. Remember t check with the airlines n their csts r limits n chacked bags. Checked bag. Check with the airline n the weight limit. Carry-n bag. Check with the airline n the weight limit. Maybe use a day-pack. 40L is a gd size. Daypack maybe yu use yur carry-n bag r persnal item bag. Phtgraphy/cmputer bag if yu can t fit them in yur carry-n bag Luggage strap(s) Bks: Purchase guide bks, but be weight cnscius. See syllabus. Tiletries: Remember that there are size limits n what yu can bring nt the plane. Yu can als purchase anything in Italy. I suggest yu avid large cntainers f any tiletries. Mst f the time use a fractin f what yu bring. Measure what yu use each day and bring just enugh t last the 3 weeks we ll be gne. Insect repellant (FYI - DEET based will destry plastics) Misc: Sunglasses Water bttle (avid large water bttles, water bladders wrk well) Ziplck bags Wallet Mney belt this is a must have. Jurnal Ntebk Pens/pencils Travel cffee cup Padlck Carabiner (lcking, small) Day pack - maybe als use this as the carry-n. 5 Infrmatin Shts: Talk t yur Dr., cnsult the CDC website, r make an apt at the Maricpa Cunty Travel Sht clinic. Mney Related. Yu can use the ATMs t get mney in the lcal currency althugh there are always bank charges fr this. Make sure yu call yur bank befre yu leave and let them knw, r yur card may be declined after its first use. Be sure t have at least 2 cards. If yu dn t use ATMs fr mney, yu can exchange US bills, althugh smetimes it s a hassle t find smewhere t change mney. 1) Bring spending mney r a credit card. I suggest a cmbinatin f bth. It s tugh t knw hw much t suggest. Here are sme things yu may/will want t use it fr: meals NOT included, drinks, snacks, junk fd, ptinal activities (there is a HUGE range f these), suvenirs, t pay fr activities. 2) Have emergency funds in case medical care is needed. 3) Have at least 2 cards that yu can use in an ATM, e.g., debit card and credit card. Be sure yu have a PIN fr bth. Carry-n & Checked Luggage. Lk carefully at the airline restrictins n what yu can put in yur carry-n bag. In carry-ns, typically n mre than 3z cntainers f any liquid r gel and NO sharp bjects like nail-clippers, scissrs, knifes etc are permitted, althugh this des vary smewhat. Put these in yur checked bag t be safe. If at all pssible, DO NOT put anything f high value in yur checked luggage. It culd get stlen. Fd. Sme meals are prvided (see the details n the MCC website fr what is cvered). Thse meals nt prvided yu will need t prvide fr yurself. Yu can purchase fd at supermarkets, street markets, cafés and restaurants. The fd in Italy is FANTASTIC, but can be a little pricey arund the main turist spts. Hairdryers and Curling Irns. Just dn t bring them! If yu must, make sure they can perate ff 220V therwise yu will NOT be able t use them. If they can run ff 220V yu ll need t purchase a plug adaptr. 6 Charging Electrnics. Make sure yu have apprpriate crds and chargers fr yur electrnics. If yu frget r lse smething yu can prbably purchase what yu need in Italy, but they might be expensive and nt readily available. Dcuments. Make at least 3 cpies f all f yur imprtant dcuments such as thse listed belw and keep them separate frm the riginals and frm each ther and leave ne full cpy with yur emergency cntacts. Yu may als want t take digital pictures f all f yur dcuments and them t yurself r place n flash drive t bring with yu. But f curse keep these cpies safe. I usually hide them in an bscure place in my bag r keep a cpy n me in my mney belt.
