4 Handy Infrmatin Suth Australia Public Hlidays (2019) Jun 12 Queen s Birthday Australian Schl Hlidays Almst all universities in Australia were created and are financed by the Federal Gvernment, but the schls (prek-12) are run by the varius State Gvernments. Universities in each state will make their semester, midsemester, and summer breaks generally crrespnd t the schl hlidays. This makes the hliday perid a busy ne fr travel, and yu shuld keep this in mind if planning t travel in Australia after the prgram ends. Mst meals are included n excursins and at scial events. Prgram Dates Arrive May 17 th Depart June 21 st, Credit Curse Students are autmatically enrlled in a ne credit pre-curse after the spring semester has begun. Typically the class will begin after spring break. Dates and times are t be determined by the Prgram Directr and the participants. Mney A nte n currency: Regardless f the level f financial resurces yu may have available fr yur perid f study abrad, all students share the same need t have quick access t their funds and, at the same time, t have their mney prtected against lss. The currency f Australia is the Australian Dllar (AUD) and is equivalent t the US dllar at a rate f apprximately: $1 USD = $1.386 AUD r $1 AUD = $0.72 USD (as f December 2018). Yu can check the current exchange rates n the web at r in the financial sectin f a large city newspaper. Visa Infrmatin and Budgeting Travel Dcuments Passprts Yu shuld apply as early as pssible befre departure t secure yur passprt thrugh a Passprt Agency (fund in majr cities), a lcal issuing ffice, a Federal r State Curt Huse, r a Class I Pst Office. Start the prcess early s that there will be plenty f time t reslve any prblems that may arise. If yu will be using yur current passprt, make sure that it is gd fr six mnths after yur return t the U.S. If it is nt, yu will need t renew it. 6 Visa All visitrs t Australia wh are nt Australian citizens will need a visa t enter the cuntry. Citizens f the fllwing cuntries are eligible t apply fr the Electrnic Travel Authrity (ETA) visa: Brunei, Canada, Hng Kng (SAR), Japan, Malaysia, Singapre, Suth Krea, and the USA. An ETA prvides authrizatin t travel and enter Australia and is electrnically linked t yur passprt. It is fr shrt term stays fr turism r business visitr activities. Yu are eligible fr the turist visa, as turists are able t engage in studies, as lng as they are under 3 mnths in length. If yu plan n staying after the prgram ends t cntinue yur studies in Australia, yu will need t apply fr a separate student visa. The ETA is $20 AUD at this time. Students f ther cuntries may apply fr a turist visa ($130 AUD). 9 Packing Packing Tips General Luggage Clthes Many items yu need can be purchased nce yu ve arrived in Adelaide. Fr example, bring travel-sized tiletries t keep yur bags light, and purchase full-sized items nce yu ve arrived. D nt bring any items f sentimental value that yu culdn t bear t lse. Remember that yu ll be in Adelaide in May and June the end f fall/beginning f winter. Temperatures range between degrees Fahrenheit. Think March r Nvember in Williamsburg. It has never snwed in Adelaide, but yu culd get rain. Pack nly what yu can carry by yurself up 2-3 flights f stairs, r walk with fr relatively lng distances. A wheeled duffle bag r suitcase plus a generus tte r backpack fr weekend travel shuld suffice. D nt pack valuables in yur checked luggage. Put address labels and cntact infrmatin inside and utside each piece f luggage. Pack medicatins in yur carry-n luggage. Pack all sharp bjects securely in yur checked baggage. Pack all liquids in plastic bags t avid leakage during travel. Place yur camera in yur carry-n. If yu take film, carry it in a lead-lined travel puch (available at camera stres). Put TSA-apprved lcks n all f yur luggage s that it can be pened withut the lck r bag being destryed. Please plan n bringing ne nicer utfit fr evenings ut and ther apprpriate ccasins. Bring easy care clthing items that are lightweight, drip dry, and wrinkleprf, such as knits, permanent press, and cttn clthes. Dark clrs are mre practical than light, as they d nt shw dirt as easily. Pack clthes yu can mix and match s as t give yur wardrbe as much variety withut having t pack as much. Only bring clthes yu can imagine wearing ften. Bring clthes that yu can layer fr varius temperatures. D nt bring clthes that immediately mark yu as freign Greek life shirts and sweatshirts, fr example. Rll clthes instead f flding them; yu will fit mre in the bag, and have fewer wrinkles upn arrival. 9

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON ELECTRICITY IN ADELAIDE Electrical utlets in Australia supply electricity at 230 vlts. Please make sure t bring apprpriate adapters, and cnverters if needed. 11 Traveling t Adelaide NOTE: Yu are respnsible fr yur wn travel arrangements t and frm Australia Airprt Pick-Up Yu are respnsible fr yur flight arrangements t and frm Adelaide. Yur accmmdatins will be available frm May 17. The Prgram Directr will cntact students later abut specific arrival times and airprt pick-up plans. This means fr mst students, leaving the US n May 15th r May 16th (depending n the length and lcatin f yur layver) in rder t arrive n the 17 th (yu lse a day crssing the Internatinal Dateline). Please carefully check yur flight itinerary befre purchase t ensure that yu are arriving n the 17 th. The prgram fficially ends June 21st (i.e., yu will need t leave by that date r make arrangements fr yur wn husing fr that night and beynd). Please ntify the Prgram Directr immediately if yur travel plans change r yur flights unexpectedly change. Frm the Airprt t yur husing: Students will be met at Adelaide airprt by the Prgram Directr wh will arrange fr taxi travel fr the shrt distance frm the airprt t yur dwntwn accmmdatin. Please be aware that yu will nt be able t find a direct flight frm the US t Adelaide and that yur plans are likely t invlve tw if nt three layvers. Be sure that yu have entered yur cmplete flight int the GEO s applicatin prtal s that thse waiting fr yu in Adelaide may be able t check n any ptential delays that yu may have incurred alng the way. Als, dress cmfrtably fr the lng hauls, and make sure t mve arund peridically during yur trans-ceanic flight. Immigratin Give yurself at least 2 hurs t g thrugh Custms and Immigratin in Australia (and maybe 3 hurs t allw time t get t yur cnnecting flight because f a change in airprt). Yu will prbably have free time, but every s ften the lines are incredibly lng and slw. Once yu check yur bags in the States (even if yu are flying t make a cnnectin befre yu fly t Australia), yu will nt have t retrieve yur bag until yu disembark the plane in Australia. Of curse, always check this plicy befre yu g. On yur flight, yu will be given an arrival frm t fill ut and give t custms; make sure yu have the address f yur accmmdatin in Adelaide handy, as yu will need it t fill ut the frm. Once in Sydney/Melburne, yu will have t pass thrugh custms and make yur cnnectin t Adelaide. This can be stressful, but here s a step-by-step guide f hw the prcess wrks: 11

12 Disembark the plane and prceed thrugh passprt cntrl. Dn t wrry abut missing it, everyne frm yur flight will be heading t the same place. This is where yu get yur visa checked ut and yur passprt stamped. They will lk at yur arrival frm and mark it if necessary. Remember that yu are nt cming t study in Australia (like yu wuld be if cming fr a full semester r year abrad) but rather yu are cming n a study trip frm yur university in the United States. Cllect yur bags at baggage claim. Yu MUST have yur bags t pass thrugh custms and t recheck n the ther side. Mve t custms. They may ask yu a few questins (e.g., D yu have any fresh fruit? ), then will check and cllect yur arrival frm. Prceed t the transfer desk f the airline yu re flying t Adelaide (yu may need t use transprt t change terminals and airprts, the transfer trip can at times take at least 30 minutes, s make sure that yu leave yurself time when bking flights). Check yur bags, and then g t yur gate. Yu may r may nt have t pass thrugh security again. Cursewrk Yu will receive infrmatin n what materials yu will need at yur prgram rientatin. Be sure that yu arrange t purchase yur textbks and ther materials (if applicable) befre yu leave the campus at the end f the Spring Semester. Living in Adelaide Husing Students will be hused at ff-campus, self-catering apartments near the main University f Adelaide campus and within clse reach f shpping, dining, and public transprt. Students will be hused in duble rms with shared bath, living rm, and kitchen area. Apartments are serviced and each have their wn laundry appliances. The htel als prvides free Wi-Fi access, cable TV, and 24 hur receptin desk access. Meals Students will have self-catering kitchens in their apartment fr meals, and the nearby Adelaide Central Market prvides fresh fd daily fr students t purchase. 14

15 Supermarkets are als lcated within the city s main shpping area, a shrt walk frm the apartments, and Adelaide is knwn fr its many cheap dining ptins, with abundant Asian and Mediterranean fd chices available. Students will be respnsible fr the majrity f their meals, but sme meals each week during the prgram will be cvered as part f excursins and scial events. Cmmunicatin Skype, Facebk, Ggle Hanguts, and ther scial media apps are great ways t talk r even vide chat fr free. T use these sites, yu will need t purchase either a micrphne r a webcam, and yur calling partner will need the same fr cmputer-tcmputer free calls. Medicatins Please remember that, while abrad, it is advisable t cnsistently fllw yur dctr s specific medicatin instructins and cntinue taking any medicatins yu are prescribed. Any changes t medicatin levels shuld nly be undertaken in direct cnsultatin with the prescribing dctr. While travel abrad always has the ptential t influence changes, gd r bad, in yur physical and mental health, d nt assume that temprary variatins in yur cnditin are indicative f lnger lasting changes. Staying well/getting sick Staying well in bth bdy and mind is very easy t d if yu have the right resurces. Adelaide in general is very safe, but when ging ut t jg, make sure t tell a friend and stay hydrated. The University has a gym n campus, which students can jin fr a small fee. Free bikes are available fr access in many lcatins acrss the city, including the University f Suth Australia s admin building lcated next dr t yur apartment cmplex. If yu d get sick, there is a health clinic right n the Adelaide University campus that is free fr students ( They prvide exams, vaccinatins, and cunseling. Pharmacies are called chemists dwn under, and carry many ver-the-cunter medicatins. Travel & Cuntry Infrmatin We encurage all students t research their study abrad destinatin. The State Department has imprtant infrmatin available nline. Be sure t read up n Australian histry, culture, and current events befre yur arrival, as well. Knwing as much as pssible abut where yu are ging will nt nly make yu mre cmfrtable during yur time in the cuntry, but will als allw yu t talk mre knwledgeably with yur new friends and teachers. Adelaide ADELAIDE (ppulatin f 1.23 millin) is the capital city f Suth Australia and is lcated n the sutheastern cast f the cntinent. Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate with ht, dry summers and mild winters. The city is a ppular hliday destinatin with 17

18 wnderful beaches nearby. The Australian utback can als be experienced after a shrt drive twards the central regin f Australia. The University f Adelaide is lcated in the heart f the city, next t parklands and the business/dining/shpping districts. The University f Adelaide is a large public university established in 1874 and is ne f the ldest institutins in Australia. There are 25,000 students in ttal at the university. The university is clse t many f the attractins f the city, including several state museums, the state library, state parliament buildings, parklands, the Adelaide Z, cncert center, sprts stadium, and btanical gardens. 18

Am I required t participate in all excursins prvided by the prgram? Yes, unless yur prgram directr says therwise. The excursins supplement the cursewrk and expand cultural learning. Will I need t seek pst apprval fr the curses I take? N, all f the curses ffered in the W&M faculty-led summer prgrams have already been apprved. Will my grades be psted n my transcript? Yes, the grades yu receive will be psted n yur W&M transcript and will be calculated int yur GPA. Can I take class pass/fail? N, this is nt an ptin. D I need t take my wn sheets and twels? Twels and linens are prvided. Hwever, if yu plan t travel befre r after the prgram, yu may want t bring yur wn twel and linens. Will my study-abrad facility have a fitness center/gym fr student use? There is a fitness center available fr use at the University f Adelaide with a separate fee. There is als a gym affiliated with the apartments where yu will be living. 19
