1 SEMESTER PACKING LIST OLD Schl will prvide the majrity f yur gear fr the curse. Hwever, yu will need t bring yur wn clthing, sme gear, and tiletries. Feel free t bring whatever gear yu have. If yu are in dubt, bring it! We will inspect all f yur clthing and gear t give suggestins n what t leave behind fr each sectin and what items yu still need t purchase. Yu may stre any extra gear at ur hme base in Andrews. A nte n cttn - Cttn clthing is perfect fr "in-twn" sectins, days ff, and anytime yu are in the frnt cuntry. Hwever, cttn is nt allwed in the backcuntry. Cttn has very pr wicking prperties, meaning that is dries very slwly. Often we will be in cnditins withut a ht sun t dry us ff and warm us up. We rely n ur gear t keep us warm and safe. If cttn clthing gets wet in the backcuntry, it will stay wet fr a lng time. Be careful nt t use clthing that has a cttn/plyester blend. D nt plan t use any cttn gear such as sweatshirts, scks, etc.. while in the backcuntry. A nte n bts - We recmmend a midweight, cmfrtable, hiking bt. D nt plan n hiking in tennis shes, cnstructin bts, sandals, etc. Bts are prbably the mst imprtant piece f gear fr yur curse and a gd fit is necessary. If yur are purchasing hiking bts fr the first time, visit yur lcal backpacking stre and get smene t fit yu fr bts. Yur tes shuldn't jam in the end when walking dwnhill and yur heel shuld lift slightly (1/8" r s) when walking. When trying n bts, be sure t wear the scks yu will be hiking One secret t dressing fr utdr travel is layering. The mre layers yu bring, the mre ptins yu have t maintain the ptimal temperature while exerting yurself. It is hard t regulate bdy temperature if yu nly have ne big jacket t take n and ff. On the semester yu will encunter a wide variety f temperatures. It is imprtant that yu bring layers that are warm, lightweight, dry quickly, and allw freedm f mvement.

Gear is a very imprtant part f yur curse, s feel free t cntact us fr inexpensive ptins and recmmendatins fr gear. Upper Bdy Layers Cttn is nt allwed Base Layer: Lng underwear tp. Synthetic, Merin Wl, etc. Example: Patagnia Capilene, Icebreaker wl Mid-Layer*: A lightweight jacket r pullver that can fit ver yur base layer. Synthetic, Fleece, Wl, etc. Example: OR Radiant Hdy, Patagnia R2, Muntain Hardwear Mnkey Man Insulated Vest (ptinal): Adds extra warmth if yu get cld easily. Fleece r Synthetic fill (Primalft, Thermal R, etc.) Example: Patagnia Nanpuff Vest, Cabelas Teewint Vest Sft Shell Jacket (ptinal): A lightweight, breathable, and weather resistant layer. Pwerstretch, Gre Windstpper, Plyester, etc. Example: OR Ferrsi, Marmt Apprach Heavier Layer: A synthetic insulated jacket that fits ver yur ther layers. Primalft, Heavy Fleece. Avid dwn as it lses the ability t keep yu warm when wet. Example: Patagnia Nanpuff, Cabelas Teewint, Patagnia R4 T-Shirts: Lightweight and quick drying fr hiking and everyday use. Bring several. Synthetic, Ply-prpylene, Merin Wl, etc. Rain Jacket*: Waterprf, breathable, and durable. Must be lightweight and packable Nyln, DWR, Gre-Tex Paclite, Pertex, etc. Example: Marmt Precip, OR Helium, Patagnia Trrentshell Lwer Bdy Layers As a basic rule, lwer bdy layers shuld mirrr upper bdy layers Base Layer: Lng underwear bttm similar t tp layer. Nyln, Nyln/Spandex blend Example: Clumbia Silver Ridge, Prana Zin Cnvertible, OR Ferrsi Shrts: Athletic nyln r similar. Cmfrtable fr hiking and swimming. Underwear: Nn-cttn. Men may prefer nyln shrts with a liner. Bring several pair. N flip-flps allwed Example: Crcks, Tennis Shes Water Shes: Used fr whitewater rafting and sea kayaking. Must have a back strap! Tennis shes, Sandals with back strap, Neprene Bties, etc. Example: Chac, Teva, Keen, Vibram Five Fingers Caving Shes: These shes get dirty! Use smething lightweight that will be cmfrtable when wet. Tennis shes r hiking bts wrk fine. Example: Vibram Five Fingers Scks: Crew length, mid-weight hiking scks. Yu can als use a liner sck inside a heavier sck. Wl, Synthetic, etc. Example: Smartwl, REI Light Hiker, Darn Tugh * Available fr rental r purchase

4 Other Clthing Shade Hat: Fr sea kayaking t prevent sunburns t yur face and neck Fleece/Wl Hat: An abslute must and will be used n every sectin. Must cver yur ears. Buff (ptinal): A nice piece wrn arund yur neck that can be pulled ver yur muth and nse. Glves: Nice t have n cld mrnings when handling equipment and cking breakfast. Fleece, Rag Wl, Pwerstretch Example: Muntain Hardwear Pwerstretch, Marmt Cnnect, Fx River Fingerless Wetsuit (ptinal): Fr swift water rescue we will be in very cld water. Yu will be prvided with 2mm "farmer jhn" wetsuits fr the curse. Hwever, students wh get cld easily may benefit frm bringing their wn (thicker) wetsuit. Gear Sleeping Bag*: Must be lightweight and pack dwn small. Mummy style is necessary. Synthetic filled bag rated t degrees r lwer. Example: Muntain Hardwear Pinle, Nrth Face Cat's Mew Headlamp: An extremely imprtant piece f equipment. Will be used every day n each sectin. Durable, Adjustable light strength, Red light setting is helpful fr night reading Example: Black Diamnd Csm, Black Diamnd Spt, Petzl Tikka Tiletries: Tthbrush, tthpaste, ft pwder, chap stick, etc. Small, travel sized items Sunscreen: Might nt need it until sea kayaking, but gd t have. Ntebk/Pens: These are a must fr all yur nte taking during the semester. Bible: Smaller is better, but be sure t bring bth Old and New Testaments. Knife: Small, lightweight, flding knife fr chpping fd and cutting rpe Dry Bag/Stuff Sack*: Used t weatherprf yur gear when packed in yur backpack Big trash bags, Nyln Stuff Sacks, Vinyl Cated Waterprf Bags, etc. Example: OR Dry Sacks, Exped Dry Bag, Sea-t-Summit Dry Bags, Seal Line Bags Watch: Required fr yur WFR curse. Having an alarm t wake yu up in the wds is nice. Digital, Water Resistant Bug Spray: Abslutely necessary fr sea kayaking. * Available fr rental r purchase

5 Optinal but suggested Camera: Small, lightweight pint and sht. Durable enugh t handle wear and tear n the trail. Bks: Bring a few gd paperback bks fr pleasure reading. Sunglasses: Nice t have during rck climbing and sea kayaking. Bandanna: Multi-use item in the backcuntry. Camp chair*: We sell Crazy Creek brand chairs with the OLD Schl lg. Very nice t have. Water bttles: Sme peple like t use their wn instead f brrwing urs. Tw 32z water bttles r equivalent. Example: Nalgene, Platypus,Camelbak, Sigg In-twn stuff yu'll need Casual Clthes: Bring sme warm casual clthes fr wearing in-twn and between sectins. Additinal Mney: Fr meals n days ff, laundry, Hnduras suvenirs, etc. Persnal Equipment: Have fun n yur days ff. Bring a muntain bike, kayak, whatever! When yu arrive, yu will be issued items fr yur curse that yu will need: backpack, fd bwl, sleeping pad, etc. Yu will be respnsible t keep track f all the gear issued t yu. In additin, the entire OLD Schl semester grup will be issued gear: stves, tents, tarps. Yu will be held respnsible t pay fr any damaged r lst gear issued t yu ut f and abve yur $100 depsit. The cst fr any grup gear lst r damaged will be dispersed amng the entire grup. If yur gear is returned back in gd cnditin, yur depsit will be returned t yu. * Available fr rental r purchase
