2 WELCOME TO OLD SCHOOL We are excited t share in this life changing seasn with yu! This packet shuld help yu get ready fr yur curse. Our staff wants t help in any way we can. - OLD Schl Staff WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US Staff - Yu will be teamed up with guides wh are knwledgeable in their areas f utdr expertise and have a lt f fun ding what they d. Mre than that, the guides that will be n yur curse have been praying fr yu fr mnths and preparing t lead and challenge yu in yur relatinship with Christ. Yu and ur staff will mst likely keep in cntact fr years t cme! Physical challenge - Yu may be expecting an easy strll thrugh flat wds, r yu may be expecting Everest. It is always hard t gauge the difficulty level f an area f wilderness yu ve never visited, r activities yu ve never participated in. If yu are in gd shape, keep it up. If yu have been enjying yur cuch at hme fr large prtins f the day, yu need t get up and start sme cnditining fr yur curse. Semester sectins invlve carrying 50-60lbs fr large prtins f the day, up hills and ver rcks. This physical activity begins n day ne, s yu need t be in shape when yu get here. While physical strength des play a factr in yur fitness, yu wuld d well t fcus n yur cardivascular endurance fr this curse. It is recmmended that yu exercise fr at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Fr help n a pre-semester fitness plan, please give us a call. Yu dn t have t be in peak athletic shape fr yur curse, but huffing and puffing always makes yur day less enjyable. We require every semester student t have a dctr cmplete an Old Schl medical screening frm. This frm can be dwnladed alng with the semester applicatin. Fd - S, are we ging t be eating rts and berries, r what? Yur diet in the backcuntry will shwcase yur creativity. We will prvide the ingredients and help yu t learn hw t ck sme amazing dishes using camp stves and ckware. Yu ll use pasta, rice, flur, cheese, trtillas, vegetables, and many ther things t whip up yur culinary masterpiece. Believe it.

We are praying that Gd will d a huge wrk in yur life and mind during this time, and that yu ll never be the same after this curse. Psitive interactin with thers - One f the biggest blessings and challenges yu are ging t face n yur semester is the clseness f the cmmunity f students and staff n this semester. Yu are ging t be living in cnstant cntact with ther students. It is natural fr clse prximity t breed sme frictin. Be prepared t exercise sme patience and grace in interactin with yur curse mates. Yu will be living and grwing in cmmunity with the bdy f Christ. This will aid yur grwth nw, and hpefully help yu t see the imprtance f REAL relatinships that g belw the surface with ther believers after yur curse. Fun attitude - Our favrite students are thse wh knw hw t have fun and are willing t try new things and rll with the punches. Outdr travel is unpredictable, and can at times be tugh. At the same time, yu can have fun in almst any envirnment with the right attitude. 4 DISCIPLINARY POLICY At the Outdr Leadership and Discipleship Schl, we seek t prvide a safe envirnment withut distractin fr learning. Any discriminatin based n race, gender, clr, r natinal rigin will nt be tlerated. Any sexual harassment r any sexual activity during OLD Schl curses will nt be tlerated. N alchl, drug, r tbacc use is permitted. Our gal is t see students mre cnfrmed t the image f Christ during their OLD Schl curse. If it is believed that students are behaving in a manner that wuld distract their r thers grwth in this gal, it will be addressed immediately. If, after being addressed, the student is still cntinuing in their disruptive/distracting behavir, disciplinary actins will be cnsidered. It is impssible t utline every ptential situatin that culd surface n each curse. OLD Schl staff is cmmitted t acting Biblically and full f grace in each situatin, led by the Hly Spirit fr the grwth f each participant invlved. Disciplinary actin fr vilatins f these plicies will be the respnsibility f the directr, as may be apprpriate in accrdance with applicable prcedures, and may result in suspensin within a curse, r dismissal frm the semester. Any student dismissed early frm a curse will be respnsible t pay the full curse tuitin.

LODGING AND ARRIVAL Ldging and Facilities - During in-twn prtins f the curse, students will stay at Snwbird Wilderness Outfitters (SWO) in ur staff cabins.

These are heated cabins, with access t nearby bathrms/shwers. All meals will be prvided during curse sectins. Yu will be respnsible fr yur meals n days ff. Expect 9 t 11 days ff during yur semester, plus several meals n halfdays ff. Parking and access t camp/ck stves is available. CELL PHONE POLICY The OLD Schl Semester is a fcused time f discipleship and wilderness-based skill. That being said, the wilderness is a key aspect f what we d. We strive t silence the nise f everyday life t allw students t be fcused n Christ, experience the wildness f nature, develp judgment, and grw. T that end, we seek t limit the pprtunities fr distractin that persnal cell phnes create. OLD Schl Students will nt be permitted t take any persnal cmmunicatin devices such as: cell phnes, satellite phnes, etc.. n the curse. In case f emergency, all instructrs n the curse will have cell phnes and satellite cmmunicatin devices. If yu r yur parents have urgent need, yu can be reached. Many believers want t give their mney t peple and causes they knw. Yu have t let them knw that yu have a need! A discipleship semester fr persnal grwth is smething that believers are apt t get behind financially. In this case, yu might chse t send ut supprt letters with inf abut the OLD Schl prgram. If yu are supprted by members f yur hme church, yu shuld send ut a newsletter while yu are here, jurnaling abut yur time n yur curse. Wrk a jb thrugh the summer and save like crazy Yard sale, ebay, craigs list. Sell things that yu d nt need anymre r that yu shuldn t need any mre and put the mney tward OLD Schl. If yu are in dubt, bring it! We will inspect all f yur clthing and gear t give suggestins n what t leave behind fr each sectin and what items yu still need t purchase. Yu may stre any extra gear at ur hme base in Andrews. A nte n cttn - Cttn clthing is perfect fr "in-twn" sectins, days ff, and anytime yu are in the frnt cuntry. Hwever, cttn is nt allwed in the backcuntry. Cttn has very pr wicking prperties, meaning that is dries very slwly. Often we will be in cnditins withut a ht sun t dry us ff and warm us up. We rely n ur gear t keep us warm and safe. If cttn clthing gets wet in the backcuntry, it will stay wet fr a lng time. Be careful nt t use clthing that has a cttn/plyester blend. D nt plan t use any cttn gear such as sweatshirts, scks, etc.. while in the backcuntry. A nte n bts - We recmmend a mid-weight, cmfrtable, hiking bt. D nt plan n hiking in tennis shes, cnstructin bts, sandals, etc. Bts are prbably the mst imprtant piece f gear fr yur curse and a gd fit is necessary. If yur are purchasing hiking bts fr the first time, visit yur lcal backpacking stre and get smene t fit yu fr bts. Yur tes shuldn't jam in the end when walking dwnhill and yur heel shuld lift slightly (1/8" r s) when walking. When trying n bts, be sure t wear the scks yu will be hiking in. One secret t dressing fr utdr travel is layering. The mre layers yu bring, the mre ptins yu have t maintain the ptimal temperature while exerting yurself. It is hard t regulate bdy temperature if yu nly have ne big jacket t take n and ff. On the semester yu will encunter a wide variety f temperatures. It is imprtant that yu bring layers that are warm, lightweight, dry quickly, and allw freedm f mvement.
