This camping cnference is designed t prvide yu with a Philmnt-based wilderness experience that mtivates yu t fllw a life f helping thers succeed, based n the ideals expressed in Scuting s Values. The Philmnt leadership is cmmitted t making PLC a very special experience. Yu will live in a team setting at Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp where yu will use yur Wd Badge leadership skills t reslve exciting and challenging backcuntry situatins. The week will cnclude with a clsing challenge fr each f yu t build upn the legacy f Waite Phillips, the benefactr f Philmnt Scut Ranch. PLC will equip yu with the skills t becme better unit leaders, Wd Badge staff, training team members and any ther leadership psitin in yur Scuting and everyday life. It will lead yu n a jurney t becme true servant leaders. Yu will be empwered t guide all the members f any grup thrugh several develpment prcesses. Submit yur Arrival Plans (lcated n page 10 f this bklet) n later than 30 days befre yur curse begins! Shuttles will take yu t the Philmnt Training Center. Fall curses: There is n shuttle service frm the area airprts in September- yu must prvide yur wn transprtatin frm the airprt t Philmnt. The BSA Annual Health & Medical Recrd is available at r Make sure t have the cmpleted Parts A, B & C n yur arrival date at the Philmnt Training Center. Bring yur cmpleted and signed medical frm, prescriptin medicatins (in riginal cntainer with label shwing yur name, directins fr use and prescribing practitiner) AND a cpy f yur health insurance card fr PLC check-in n Day 1! Participants will participate in a medical re-check n Day 1. Participants wh d nt meet the physical requirements, including height and weight, will nt be allwed t participate in the Philmnt Leadership Challenge! Plan and prepare fr any special dietary needs! 4 Lcating Philmnt Scut Ranch and Training Center Cimarrn, NM When yu reach Cimarrn, turn suth n State Highway 21 and drive apprximately 4 miles t Philmnt Scut Ranch. As yu enter Philmnt, yu will see several buildings befre yu reach yur destinatin; these buildings are ther parts f Philmnt Base Camp, such as the Administratin Building. Lk fr the brwn Philmnt Training Center sign near mile-marker 4, then prceed anther 8 miles t Rayad. The Villa Philmnte, the Mediterranean-style hme f the Phillips family, is lcated n the grunds f the Philmnt Training Center and will serve as a guide t thse arriving by car. Rayad and the Kit Carsn Museum are n the west (right) side f the rad, acrss frm the entrance t the UU Bar Express Ranch. RRLC 2018 PLC Cnference Guidebk 4

5 Philmnt Leadership Challenge Infrmatin Sheet The Philmnt Leadership Challenge brings Wd Badge skills t life in a majestic Philmnt setting. Just as the Natinal Advanced Yuth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) hnes and expands upn skills taught t Scuts in NYLT, the Philmnt Leadership Challenge (PLC) takes adult leadership t an exciting new level thrugh experiential learning. The Philmnt Leadership Challenge simultaneusly immerses yu and yur crew in challenging scenaris that require the applicatin f Wd Badge leadership skills fr success. The Philmnt staff is cmmitted t making the Philmnt Leadership Challenge a very special experience. Participants will live in a crew setting at Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp, where they will use their leadership skills t reslve exciting and challenging backcuntry situatins. PLC will equip yu with the skills t becme better unit leaders, Wd Badge staff, training team members, and any ther leadership psitin thrughut yur Scuting life. Yu will be enriched with the life skills that are essential fr the present and the future. Requirements Cmpleted r staffed Wd Badge, r staffed NYLT as an adult. A current Annual BSA Health and Medical Recrd, Parts A, B & C is required, alng with a cpy f yur insurance plicy card (t be attached t yur Annual Health and Medical Recrd). All participants must meet the height/weight restrictins as listed in the Medical Recrd. If yu d nt meet these requirements at check-in, yu will nt be allwed t participate. Missin Statement The missin f the Philmnt Leadership Challenge (PLC) is t prvide participants with a Philmnt - based wilderness experience that mtivates them t fllw a life f helping thers succeed based n the values expressed in the Scut Oath and Law. We accmplish this missin by: Creating an envirnment f learning and fun Prviding a clear understanding f servant leadership in challenging wilderness envirnments Prviding real life pprtunities fr ethical decisin making, mentring and living the Scut Oath and Law Applying all the leadership skills taught in Wd Badge. By the end f the PLC curse, participants shuld be able t: Encurage thers t live a life f Leadership Service Act as a Servant Leader wh shares the skills f Wd Badge and helps develp ther leaders thrugh their enhanced understanding f the Wd Badge material Intuitively use the Wd Badge leadership skills in all aspects f their lives Be an advcate fr Wd Badge, NYLT, NAYLE and PLC in their lcal envirnment 2018 PLC Cnference Guidebk 5

6 When and Where is it? There are tw sessins f the Philmnt Leadership Challenge in These ccur July 1 7 and September Curses begin at 8:00 a.m. SHARP n Sunday mrning and end at 10:00 p.m. n Friday evening. Participants nrmally depart early n Saturday mrning. Yu will meet at Rayad, the lcatin f the Kit Carsn Museum, fr check-in n Day One. This is lcated apprximately 8 miles suth f the Philmnt Training Center alng Highway 21 (see map n page 4, in this guide.) Yu will be expected t be in attendance at Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp and ther curse venues 24 hurs a day fr the entire length f the curse. Tents at Rayad will be prvided if yu are arriving the night befre the curse begins, at n extra fee. Participants can leave Philmnt n the evening f the final day, r early the fllwing mrning, nce the curse cncludes. Yu are expected t be ready fr registratin at Rayad at 8:00 a.m. sharp n Sunday. Unifrm Yu will wear the cmplete and fficial field unifrm apprpriate fr yur Scuting prgram (i.e. Cub Leaders wear Cub Unifrm, etc.), including fficial Pants, Shirt, Scks, Belt and WB Regalia. Bring enugh f each unifrm part fr the entire week. Substitutin unifrm pieces are nt allwed. See Persnal Equipment List n page 7. Family Prgram Because f the remte lcatin f Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp, yu will nt be available t visit r care fr yur family members during the week. Hwever, we highly recmmend yur spuse and family stay at the Philmnt Training Center during the week, if yur spuse is available fr the entire week. Prgram Csts The cst f the PLC prgram is $550 in This fee cvers meals and ldging, beginning with breakfast n the first day f yur curse (Sunday) and cncluding with breakfast n the fllwing Saturday after the final day f yur curse. The fee als cvers training materials, tw (2) PLC curse t-shirts, ne (1) PLC curse cap and ne (1) PLC curse patch. Transprtatin and early arrival fees are additinal. Transprtatin Yu are respnsible fr arranging yur wn transprtatin t the Philmnt Training Center. The recmmended mde f transprtatin frm nearby airprts is private r rental car in the fall, with a shuttle service available during the summer. Please check the website fr shuttle infrmatin (the 2018 Shuttle Frms will be available at in February 2018.) Transprtatin t and frm Ratn New Mexic is als available (please see the PLC Arrival Frm n page 10). Please indicate if yu will arrive at Rayad n Saturday evening (the night befre check-in), s that a tent can be assigned t yu. Yu will nt be staying vernight at the Philmnt Training Center, which is 8 miles t the nrth f Rayad PLC Cnference Guidebk 6

7 Equipment A Persnal Equipment List is included in this packet. During the curse, yu will be hused at the Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp (RRLC) in platfrm tents, which have cts and mattresses fr tw participants; yu will need a sleeping bag. There is n electricity in the tents. Yu will als spend ne night in the backcuntry. Yu will need a backpacking tent and a backpack; yu may brrw a backpacking tent and backpack frm Philmnt. Yu will be carrying yur gear int yur campsite at RRLC frm the bus turn-arund near Kit Carsn - a distance f ½ mile; heavy suitcases, heavy duffle bags r trunks are nt recmmended. Yu can als ship yur equipment in advance f yur arrival if yu wuld like. See address prvided belw. Physical Requirements PLC is an active, utdr-based curse with much time spent in the backcuntry. While nt extreme, yu need t be in gd physical health, with gd hiking ability, as is required fr any backcuntry experience at Philmnt. As such ALL participants must pass the Annual BSA Health and Medical Recrd Parts A, B & C. All participants must meet the height/weight restrictins as listed in the Medical Recrd. If yu d nt meet these requirements at check-in, yu will nt be allwed t participate! The cmpleted BSA Annual Health & Medical Recrd will be verified befre yu are allwed t hike t Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp. The BSA Annual Health & Medical Recrd Parts A, B, & C is available fr dwnlad at r Allergies / Special Fd Requirements Philmnt des nt prvide fd fr special dietary needs when participants are in the back cuntry! Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp is cnsidered part f the back cuntry! If such meals are necessary, yu will need t prvide yur wn fd. Please discuss any special meal needs with yur Curse Directr prir t arriving at Philmnt. He/she will prvide yu with the menu and cntents f the menu s that yu can plan any substitutin meals. This includes special dietary fds such as thse wh are gluten intlerant r vegetarians. Yur Mailing Address at Philmnt Mail must be prperly addressed fr delivery. Bring stamps and stamped pstcards. Mail is delivered every day except Sunday. Outging mail is cllected every day. 8 Philmnt Leadership Challenge Persnal Equipment List T help yu plan and prepare yur persnal gear fr the Philmnt Leadership Challenge, please nte the fllwing: 1. Yu will spend five nights at Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp and ne night at a backcuntry campsite. 2. At Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp, yu will sleep in a tw-persn wall tent. The tents are n wden platfrms and have cts with mattresses. There is n electricity in the tents. At the backcuntry site, yu will sleep n the grund in tw-persn backpacking tents. Philmnt will supply tents. If yu wuld like t bring a tw-persn backpacking tent fr use in the backcuntry, yu may d s; hwever, yu will be required t share yur tent with anther persn. 3. If yu arrive by shuttle, yu will be transprted frm the Philmnt Training Center t Rayad fr checkin. If yu drive, yu will nt have access t yur persnal vehicle until the day f departure. 4. When yu arrive at Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp, yu will walk frm the rad t yur campsite, a distance f 1/2 mile, uphill. Yu will need t carry all f yur gear in ne trip. Please nte that due t the rcky terrain, rlling bags are challenging, and nt recmmended. A backpack may be brrwed during the check-in prcess n Sunday mrning. Please advise if yu will need a backpack. 5. Yur PLC experience invlves an vernight backpacking trip. The hike will invlve apprximately 4 miles ne-way, starting at abut 6,500 feet, with an elevatin gain f 375 feet. On this trip, yu will carry yur persnal gear plus yur share f grup gear. Yu must be able t hike and carry a pund backpack! 6. Rain is always a pssibility and the evenings can be very cl. Be prepared! 7. Philmnt is bear cuntry. Precautins must be taken t avid attracting bears t the campsites. All items that have an dr ( smellables ) will be stred in a Philmnt-apprved manner. Yu must bring a stuff sack r large Ziplc bag in which t stre these items; these will include mst/all f yur tiletries and csmetics. A thrugh briefing n bear safety and smellables will be prvided n the first day f the curse. Smellable items are nted n the packing list. 8. Yu will wear a cmplete and fficial BSA field unifrm fr yur prgram area r a BSA activity unifrm at all times during the curse. An fficial field unifrm includes the fficial BSA Scut r fficial Venturing shirt and insignia; fficial BSA r fficial Venturing shrts r lng pants; fficial BSA r fficial Venturing scks; and BSA leather r web belt. An activity unifrm is the same as yur field unifrm except yu will wear the PLC t-shirt instead f yur unifrm shirt. Substitutin unifrm pieces are nt allwed! 9. Yur curse fee includes tw (2) PLC curse t-shirts and ne (1) PLC curse cap. The cap is a part f the unifrm. Additinal PLC t-shirts may be available fr purchase. Yu will als have an pprtunity t purchase a PLC belt buckle and rder a PLC fleece jacket. 10. There will nt be an pprtunity t d laundry during the curse. 11. Yu may bring yur cell phne t Rayad Ridge Leadership Camp fr use in emergencies; hwever, there may be n service and there are very limited facilities t charge yur phne s battery. 11 Cancellatin & Refund Plicy fr the Philmnt Training Center Cancellatins must be received in writing 30 days prir t the first day f yur curse. A $100 prcessing fee will be applied. Fr cancellatins received inside f the 30 days, a prcessing fee f $150 will be applied. The refund will be applied t the credit card listed under the registratin prfile. Or, if payments were nly made in the frm f a check, the refund will be mailed in the frm f a check. Refunds cannt be deferred r transferred t ther Philmnt-related prgrams utside f the Philmnt Training Center, r deferred t the summer cnferences f the fllwing year.
