2 Backgrund Webels Weekend is being held at Camp Gernim, a Grand Canyn Cuncil Scut Camp near Paysn, AZ. It is an pprtunity fr Webels yuth, their parents and/r leaders t enjy the utdrs, participate in Webels-specific utdr activities, have fun, and learn skills that will help them succeed when they crss ver t By Scuts. The gal f attending Webels Weekend is: 1. T have fun in the utdrs 2. T learn new things. 3. T give these By-Scuts-In-Training the pprtunity t see what it is like t attend a By Scut Summer Camp, with real camp staff prviding the prgram. This will lessen their fears f attending Summer Camp nce they transitin t By Scuts. Wh is Webels Weekend fr? Webels Weekend is fr any by wh is between 9 and 11 years ld and wh is wrking n his Webels r Arrw f Light rank. Hw t attend Webels Weekend There are tw ways t attend Webels Weekend. The first way is as a parent-child partnership, where a parent accmpanies the yuth t camp. The secnd way is as a den, with r withut parents attending. In this case, there must be at least ne registered adult, and anther adult, fr every 5 bys, but there must always be at least ne registered adult, plus anther adult n matter hw many yuth are attending. 2 Registratin and Check-in/Departure Prcess Registratin The registratin prcess is pretty straightfrward, and takes place nline thrugh the Cuncil website. Registratin guarantees yur spt at camp. Shting Sprts and ther activities will be included in the schedule yu will receive upn arrival at camp. Check-in Check-in begins at 11:00AM. When yu arrive at camp, yu will be greeted by camp staff at the cvered shelter at the nrth end f the parking lt. Yu will need t check in with bth Headquarters and Health Ldge staff at this lcatin. Yu will be prvided with campsite infrmatin and prgram schedules. Please be prepared at check in with cmpleted health frms fr EVERY yuth and adult participant. Remember, an attached cpy f the family health insurance card is REQUIRED. Yu will be allwed t drive ne vehicle int camp, unlad, and immediately return the vehicle t the parking lt.

3 3 Here s the anticipated sequence f activities when yu arrive at camp: 1. Check in with the camp staff at cvered shelter by the gate as previusly described. 2. Find yur campsite. 3. Unlad yur gear. 4. Return vehicle t Parking Lt. N exceptins, all vehicles must be returned t the Parking Lt. Please BACK IN t parking spt. 5. Set up yur campsite. 6. Check Schedule and Explre the Camp. Checkut Prcess Camp ends n Tuesday at 11:30AM with Check-ut at Trading Pst, where a sack lunch will be prvided. Please plice yur campsite thrughly and pick up any trash. Make sure that any trash in yur campsite trash cntainer is taken t the central dumpster. Please make sure that latrines and washstands are washed dwn and clean. Yur campsite will be inspected prir t yur checkut. Yur Scuts shuld check that persnal items are packed and please leave the campsite as clean as r cleaner than yu fund it. When yu are ready t leave, please g t the Trading Pst t Check-ut. Prir t departure, there may be departure packets, which will be available at the Trading Pst. Details n the camping experience Parent/Leader Participatin Yur rle as a leader r parent during Webels Weekend is as a guide and mentr. As a parent r leader, yur jb is t step back and let the scuts try ut their wings in a safe, secure envirnment, s please let them d as much as they are able t d, and dn t d anything fr them that they can d themselves. Encurage the scuts t wrk tgether as a team, rather than as an adult/yuth partnership. This encurages the scuts t start develping leadership skills, builds cnfidence, and really emphasizes the Patrl Methd. Yu will accmpany the yuth during the structured part f the day (mrnings and evening activities) and yu are expected t pitch in and assist as needed during KP, and ther times during camp s that yur scuts can cmplete the activity in the time allwed. This means pitching in, nt taking ver unless safety is an issue. Accmpanying the yuth during free time is recmmended, but nt required except where indicated. Yu must use yur judgment as t whether certain yuth are mature enugh t buddy up with a friend and ram the camp alne. Setting thse rules early in camp will help everyne have a great experience. The gal is t have the scuts becme familiar with the idea f camping withut their parents in a By Scut setting.

4 Facilities Camp Gernim is a Cuncil-run Scut camp, which has facilities t supprt all types f camping. This is ne f the tw camps where By Scuts attend summer camp. There are 29 campsites hlding peple each. There is at least ne campfire ring in each site. Trash dispsal is available at the camp dumpster. Yu will be sharing campsites with bys frm ther units. Directins t Camp Gernim Frm Phenix, take State Highway 87 nrth. After reaching Paysn, cntinue n Highway 87 abut 12 miles until yu reach the Cntrl Rad turn-ff marked by highway marker 265, turn right. Cntinue n the Cntrl Rad fr abut six miles, then turn left nt Webber Creek Rad, fllw this fr abut 2 miles int camp. Allw 2 t 2-1/2 hurs driving time frm Central Phenix. Frm Flagstaff take Lake Mary Rad t State Rute 87 suth past Pine t Cntrl Rad. Turn left n Cntrl Rad (dirt) fr abut six miles, then turn left nt the Webber Creek Rad, fllw this fr abut 2 miles int camp. Allw 2 t 2 1/2 hurs driving time. Frm Presctt take HWY 69 suth t near Dewey. Take Hwy 169 t I-17, then g nrth n I-17. Take the General Crk exit (#285) t General Crk Trail, and turn right, cntinue fr 1.6 miles, turn right nt Hwy 260. Prceed 32 miles, climbing up the Rim, until yu reach Hwy 87, turn right nt Hwy 87 and cntinue past Pine, until yu reach Cntrl Rad. Turn left n Cntrl Rad (dirt) fr abut six miles, then turn left nt the Webber Creek Rad, fllw this fr abut 2 miles int camp. Allw 2 t 2 1/2 hurs driving time. Cking Meals prvided as part f the Webels Weekend fees include dinner Friday Night, breakfast Saturday Mrning and Sack Lunch at Check-ut. Befre checking in Friday, please eat r bring yur lunch t eat while waiting t check-in. Fd Many adult/yuth will want t bring sme f their wn snacks and fd. Please keep these secured in a cler r plastic bin, therwise the lcal wildlife will visit yur site extensively during the nighttime hurs. Campsite Assignment Campsites will be assigned based n registratin infrmatin. Yuth and adults/leaders frm the same unit will be assigned t the same campsite where pssible. It is critical that yu prvide cmplete registratin infrmatin n the registratin site s that we can assign campsites crrectly. Latrines/Washstand/Water Each campsite has a latrine (vault tilet), washstand, and water available. Participants are respnsible fr keeping these areas clean during their stay. We suggest yu bring hand sap and tilet paper in case the latrines/washstands are nt equipped. Latrines shuld be cleaned daily and befre check ut. Cleaning supplies are available at the Cmmissiner Shack (see map). 4

5 Trash All trash shuld be remved each night frm yur site t prevent unwanted visitrs during the night. Please help us keep ur camp clean. All trash must be put int the dumpster prir t yur departure frm camp. Vehicle There is n parking available at the individual campsites. All equipment must be unladed and vehicles remved t the parking area as sn as pssible. Vehicles must be backed-in t parking spts t insure rapid evacuatin shuld it becme necessary. Camp rads must be kept clear at all times. Help keep the illusin f wilderness by parking in designated areas nly. Trading Pst Camp Gernim has a full-service Trading Pst with clthing, suvenirs, camp essentials and snacks. Pre-rdered T-shirts will be available at the Trading Pst. Free Time There are numerus pprtunities fr scuts t explre camp. They can visit the varius areas arund camp such as Nature t check ut the reptiles and amphibians. Or they can just hang-ut, catch crawdads (please kill them as they are invasive and destry fish in the lake), visit the trading pst, r just have fun. Shting Sprts This is a structured event that will be n yur schedule. DO NOT BRING ANY Persnal Archery Equipment t Camp! DO NOT BRING Persnal Firearms f ANY Type r Caliber t Camp! (This includes airsft, BB, paintball & ther "prjectile" devices.) DO NOT BRING ANY Ammunitin t Camp! BSA Natinal Requirements and insurance regulatins stipulate strict guidelines fr use f the range. Thank Yu fr Yur Cperatin. Campfire Ceremny Friday night is a campwide Campfire, held at the amphitheatre, and presented by Camp Gernim Staff. Unifrms Shuld be wrn: During flag ceremnies During dinner During the evening campfire All ther times, they can wear ther Class-B r activity shirts. Emergencies In the event an emergency ccurs in camp, the Camp Directr must be ntified immediately. If the Camp Directr is nt available, the Prgram Directr r Camp Ranger shuld be ntified. If the emergency is f a medical nature, cntact the Health Ldge withut delay. 5

6 6 Insurance Each registered yuth r adult member f BSA is autmatically cvered under BSA insurance. Tur Permits are nt required fr this activity as it is Cuncil led, hwever, they are always recmmended fr any activity which has a risk level assciated with it. Sharing f Sleeping Quarters When assigning sleeping arrangements, either tw Scuts share a tent r tw adults share a tent, r Scut and parent/guardian frm same family share a tent. Under n circumstances can a Scut sleep in the same tent with an adult unless that persn is their wn parent/guardian. Health and Safety The safety f each participant/attendee is ur highest cncern. Health Ldge Camp Gernim will prvide a trained medical staff nsite and they are available fr any firstrespnder issues and basic First Aid. Any medicatins (insulin, ADHD meds, inhalers etc) regularly taken by family members r participants MUST be brught t camp as nly basic pain relievers/antibitic intments will be n hand at the Health Ldge. Any emergency prescriptin meds (ie EpiPens) need t be brught by the attendee. Mst imprtantly, if yu r any f yur family wh are attending are sick when it is time t cme t camp, please stay hme and make sure that that persn gets well. Refunds in that case will be handled n a case-by-case basis. Medical Frms All attendees regardless f age at Webels Weekend are required t submit the fficial BSA medical frm, Part A and B t the Health Ldge staff when checking in at camp. Yu will hld n t the frms during yur stay at camp. Bring frm with yu if a visit t the Health Ldge is necessary r required. Respnsibility Every effrt will be made t insure a safe envirnment fr all attendees, but parents/guardians are ultimately respnsible fr the health and well-being f all attendees Buddy System Camp is mre fun when shared with a friend. Scuts always shuld be with a Buddy r adult whenever walking arund camp. The buddy system is t be used fr all land and water activities in camp. Child Abuse Scut leaders are expected t be familiar with B.S.A. Yuth Prtectin Guidelines. Reprt any suspected child abuse incidents immediately t the CAMP DIRECTOR ONLY. Camp Directr will cntact apprpriate Cuncil Staff and lcal law enfrcement fr investigatin.

7 Crrective Discipline As an fficial Scuting functin, all participants are expected t d their best t fllw the Scut Oath and Law at all times. Parents/Guardians are expected t maintain discipline with their scuts/wards. The camp staff is there t cnduct the prgram and t assist yu where and when they can while fcusing n delivering a quality prgram fr all campers. It is nt the intent f the camp staff t interfere with hw a parent disciplines their child. Hwever, Webels Weekend is a safe haven fr all children. BSA plicy dictates that physical methds f disciplining are unacceptable. Spanking, slapping, r therwise disciplining with physical methds will nt be allwed while in camp. Nn-physical methds f discipline such as time-ut r remval frm an activity are allwed. Failure t fllw these plicies may result in law enfrcement being cntacted and pssible remval frm camp. Prper Ftwear Open-ted shes are nt permitted in camp. Why, yu ask? Have yu ever stubbed a te n a rck r rt? Yu dn t want t! Prper ftwear is required at all times. Smking Smking by adults is allwed nly in designated areas at Camp Gernim. The parking lt, in yur car, and behind the dining hall. Please d nt smke in frnt f the Scuts. Pcket Knives Pcket knives are restricted t 3 inches r less f blade, and t thse Webels that have cmpleted knife training and safety and have earned their Whittling Chip, and the card must be n their persn when carrying a pcketknife. Sheath and survival knives are nt allwed at camp. Telephne Cell Phne service is sptty at Camp Gernim. Use f camp phne is restricted t emergency use nly. String f Fd, Fd Management While it is unlikely that a bear r ther predatr will cme int camp when Webels are arund, it culd still happen. Fd must be securely stred, either in secured cntainers (clers) r in vehicles. Please make sure all tables are cleaned after every use t limit animal visits. Mini-bears (squirrels), skunks, raccns and ther smaller animals are very cmmn in this area and are liable t pse as much a nuisance as a real bear r ther animal. Under n circumstances shuld fd (this includes anything that might smell like fd like flavred waters etc) be allwed in tents that are t be ccupied by campers. We recmmend practicing backcuntry prcedures f nt sleeping in the same clthes that campers have been active in during the day, t eliminate the pssibility f having fd drs n sleeping clthes. Similarly, campers shuld wash befre bed t insure that bedrlls remain clean and any fd drs are remved frm their skin. 7

8 Wild Animals Camp Gernim sits inside thusands f acres f Natinal Frest, s wild animals can be expected. Animals ranging frm mice, squirrels, and skunks, all the way t elk, bears, and pssibly muntain lins. Nw, n animal in its right mind is ging t be anywhere near a bunch f nisy Webels, but thse aren t the animals we are wrried abut. Please make sure that campers d nt apprach animals, feed them, tuch them, r bther them. This is their hme, and we are just visitrs t it, s we need t respect their hme. Feeding animals, even accidentally, teaches them t rely n humans fr fd, s during times when there are few campers r events happening, they may starve because they have lst their ability t frage n their wn. If yu have an encunter with a wild animal that appears dangerus, yu need t reprt the incident t a staff member. Animals in Camp Pets are nt allwed in camp. Please leave yur pets at hme. Please remind parents and visitrs that pets are nt allwed in camp at any time. Service animals are permitted, but be aware that this is a wilderness area and the issues this envirnment can cause with animals. Persnal Cleanliness Being clean in bdy and mind are part f the Scut Law and part f Scut training. Be sure that yur Scuts wash up each mrning and evening prir t ging t bed. Be sure that they change their clthing regularly and wash their hands befre cming t each meal. Behavir, Cde f Cnduct It is imprtant that yur Scuts remember they are members f the By Scuts f America. As Webels, nw is the time t teach them prper utdr manners and t learn t live by the Outdr Cde. Please dn t allw yur Scuts t cut dwn live trees and/r plants r allw them t destry nests r ther wildlife that lives at Camp Gernim. This is als the time t reinfrce the Scut Oath and Law. We recgnize that all campers, bth yuth and adult, shuld live the Oath and be Trustwrthy, but we als knw that this is nt always the case. Als, teach them that when traveling arund ur camp, they shuld pick up any garbage r trash alng the way and dispse f it prperly. The general rule f Scut camping n any level is that Yu leave it cleaner than when yu fund it. Teach yur Scuts that crssing/cutting thrugh anyne s campsite t get frm ne pint t anther is nt allwed. They shuld always g arund the site. Als there is t be NO crssing/cutting thrugh any prgram areas by Scuts r adults. This can cause a very unsafe cnditin and will nt be allwed. 8
