2 A rare gem within walking distance of the Dorset coast. Description Grove House is an extremely attractive Listed Grade II village property with stone elevations under a thatched roof. Dating back to the 18th century, this stunning venue sits in its very own secluded, central location at the heart of the popular coastal village of Burton Bradstock. The beautiful house with its elegant proportions, high walled gardens, splendid location, plus impeccable historical naval connections makes it a truly special property, this along with the fact that Grove House is on the market for only the fourth time since 1781 makes it undoubtedly unique as this historical note below describes. The Property Until 1935 Grove House was the home of the Roberts family. The property was acquired in the 18th.Century by Richard Roberts when he married the farmer s widow Mary Hoskins. Richard and Mary Roberts were later joined at Grove House by his brother, Captain Francis Roberts. In 1781 the future Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy was sent at the age of 12, to his first ship, the brig Helena as the Captain s servant, the Captain was Francis Roberts of Grove House. This was the beginning of a long connection with Admiral Hardy who subsequently lived further down the coast at Portesham and was a frequent visitor to Grove House where, together with Admiral Ingram of Ingram House also in the village, these three Dorset Naval Officers held many convivial Naval Occasions (see Three Dorset Captains at Trafalgar by Broadley and Bartelot 1906). Capt. Roberts nephew, Midshipman Roberts, was on board the Victory at Trafalgar during the battle and witnessed the death of Nelson. Amongst Midshipman Roberts papers was found copy of the Song of the Loyal Volunteers of Burton Bradstock, the camp song of the Burton Volunteers during the Napoleonic Wars. The link with Nelson continues over the centuries. Cecilia Anna Bennett, who bought Grove House from the last surviving Roberts in 1935, was orphaned as a young child and one of her guardians was Hugh Nelson Ward, a distant cousin of hers and the grandson of Horatia Nelson Ward, the daughter of Admiral Nelson. It was in 1996 that Cecilia s granddaughter, also Cecilia, whilst visiting Dorset discovered, purely by chance, that Grove House was up for sale once more. The young Cecilia had been born in the house in 1947 and had always dreamt of living in it again, fortune smiled and she was able to buy it back, thus coming full circle.

4 Outside Location The garden at Grove House is particularly lovely and surrounded by an early stone wall. A pedestrian gate leads from the lane to the front of the garden where mature trees and shrubs are in abundance. Archways lead to new and secret areas and beautiful lawns with a kitchen garden Mr McGregor would covet. The large outbuilding at the east end of the garden houses a conservatory, the perfect place to sit and listen to the waves crashing on the shores of the nearby Jurassic coast, plus good storage space, workshop and garage. At the west end a sits a large greenhouse with easy access to the house. Burton Bradstock is situated along Chesil Beach about 5km form Bridport. The village nestles around the church of St Mary the Virgin with 16th and 17th century thatched cottages alongside. The main part of the church is 15th century although one part dates back a further 100 years. In the Saxon period the village was called Brideton, meaning The Village of the River Brode and is recorded in the Domesday Book. The village was probably engaged in smuggling back in time, as were many the villages along the Jurassic Coast. Burton Bradstock has a primary school, Post Office, the renowned Hive Café next to the National Trust Beach, two pubs, the newly opened Seaside Boarding House, a hotel, restaurant and cocktail bar, a garage with Spar shop and library. The larger town of Bridport, some few miles down the coast, retains an excellent number of independent shops, restaurants and a thriving street market on Saturdays and Wednesdays, along with an excellent Vintage quarter. A number of large supermarkets can also be found either in or around the town including a Waitrose and a Morrisons. There is also a Community Hospital, a large Medical Centre, a popular Leisure Centre, a successful Arts Centre and a number of independent festivals involving the Arts are held throughout the year. Much of the countryside around the area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where strict planning controls apply to preserve its special character, that along with the large number of private estates, who have for centuries maintained its beauty through careful stewardship, help to make this landscape some of the finest that the South West has to offer. The Jurassic Coastline, a World Heritage site that stretches from Orcombe Point in Devon to Old Harry Rocks in South Dorset is another prominent feature of the area and attracts a large diversity of people and investment to West Dorset.
