4 Introduction Church Cliff House dates back to 1799 and was built as a gentleman s residence on the site of the much earlier Manor House of Sir John Buck, High Sheriff of York in 1790 It is situated on the north side of the church ravine next to St. Oswald s Church, which was described by Pevsner as easily the finest church in the north east corner of the East Riding and is in an elevated position above the popular coastal seaside town of Filey. The house is an impressive and striking Grade II listed residence, built of light red brick in English brick with stone dressings and a hipped slate roof.
