4 LOCATION Foston is a small village near Castle Howard, surrounded by well-maintained farmland. It has a long history and (according to Wikipedia) is mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Fostun, derived from the Old Scandinavian meaning Fort Settlement. There has been a church there since then and the current building dates in part from the 12th Century. The Howardian Hills are on the doorstep, affording instant access to an official Area of Outstanding National Beauty. Castle Howard itself is 5 minutes away by car and there are numerous quaint villages and country pubs in the area. For greater amenities, both Malton and (on a larger scale) York are within a short drive. Both offer an impressive mix of retail, leisure, education and dining facilities, which have all contributed to each of them being rated amongst the most desirable places to live in the UK in the media. York's new Vanguard Retail Park with its John Lewis and impressive M & S Food Hall is only a 15 minute drive, traffic permitting. The private schools of St Peters, Bootham, The Mount, Queen Margarets, Pocklington, Terrington, The Minster School, St Olaves and Queen Ethelburga's are all commutable from Foston.
