21 YOUTH ACTIVITIES MONTH SCHOOL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM by Albert Handelman M T Ml c I E 1 Last _spring, the Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary Club's Youth Committee decided that this year the Committee's sole project would be "sponsorship" of the School Volunteers program. The decision was made after the Committee reviewed presentations regarding a number of high quality, deserving programs serving youth in Sonoma County. The Committee's selection of the School Volunteers program reflects the committee members' belief that this is an excellent program which could benefit greatly from the Club's involvement. The School Volunteers program operates in 21 public schools in Santa Rosa. Volunteers engage in a wide variety of activities, from weekiy Diing or other in-classroom work; to as-needed work on construction or other special projects. Thus, volunteers can structure their time commitments both time of day; day of week; and total hours to fit their personal schedules. The Committee's "sponsorship" of the School Volunteers program will not be financial. Rather, it will be to get as many members of the club as possible to volunteer some of their time to help the local schools. The Committee hopes that every member will make the time to participate. We are the first service club approached by School Volunteers, and we would like to set an example for the rest of the community. Details of the program will be presented to the Club by Gwen Zeller. Gwen founded School Volunteers last year, and she will explain the growth of the program and its goals. Prior to her retirement, Gwen "Tked for many years as a school nurse, although her background ideals expertise in a wide variety of areas. DON'T FORGET...
