March 2016, Vol. 7 Issue 9 The Coupeville Lions Club meets Wednesday Evenings 6:00 pm Fellowship-Networking/6:30 pm Dinner/7 pm-1 hour meeting & program. We meet at the Coupeville United Methodist Church (North Main and 7th Street) Bruce s Bullets March is usually great kite flying weather. Not too cold-lots of wind-you get the picture. Well, anyhoo--i ll try to not let that describe my comments for this month! But there is much to say, none-the-less. First of all, how about that scholarship auction! Wow! A lot of planning and hard work paid off with our best scholarship auction ever! But it isn t over yet. There is still the Awards Ceremony. That s where all that hard work translates into smiles on the faces of Coupeville s graduating senior class. But, if you don t come you won t see them. So, let s make our plans now for that night. Wear your vests and come see the fruit of your labor! More later about the date. Moving on, more of us are getting out on visitations. Thank you, Lion John Kohlmann, for doing such a great job with that program. Remember, a visitation is not only fun and informative, but it counts as a regular meeting too. Just be sure to get it documented. As most of you know, Lion Gary Parker, our Lion Tamer, has stepped up to the plate and volunteered to be our Boy Scouts Representative. Thank you, Lion Gary. Lion Rod Barnes has carried that banner for quite a long time, and I m sure that he would agree that it will be in capable hands! Speaking of Lion Rod, I understand that he is feeling better after having fluid removed from his lungs. Rest well, Lion Rod, and we will be looking forward to seeing you back when you have recovered your strength. I believe that this month presents to us a picture of a healthy club, and one striving for even greater achievements. Thanks to each and every one of you! Looking further ahead, our Membership Open House will be May 4th. So if you've got friends or neighbors who are just curious about Lions, you can ask them to keep that night open.

We will also be doing a visitation to the North Whidbey Lions regular membership meeting on March 23rd. They meet at the San Remo Restaurant on Midway Blvd and everyone just orders off the menu.

Lion Anne Colligan sponsored Sandra and Bill Johnson in February, and we should have at least two more new members joining us in March. Looking further ahead, our Membership Open House will be May 4th. So if you've got friends or neighbors who are just curious about Lions, you can ask them to keep that night open. I know there are many Lions planning to join the North Whidbey Lions Club for their 30th Charter anniversary at El Cazador Restaurant in February. We will also be doing a visitation to the North Whidbey Lions regular membership meeting on March 23rd. They meet at the San Remo Restaurant on Midway Blvd and everyone just orders off the menu. They gather at 11:30. Their President, Lion Chadd Davis, is also the police chief. Might be worth knowing him someday! The Coupeville Leos Club had lots of fun in February. They were a big help at our Scholarship Auction and surprised lots of people during the meal singing a song accompanied by Leos playing their musical instruments. Leos also joined the Honor Society in serving meals and cleanup. The Leos finished out the month by hosting a cookie social for some of our senior residents at Careage. (See photo) Lots of great homemade cookies. A game of "What" was enjoyed by all. The Leos all said they want to do it again! Lion John e lost another Coupeville Lion in February Jim Price. Jim, a hardworking and loyal W garage sale volunteer, died on February 15. Jim had dealt with health issues most of his life, but it never seemed to affect his attitude towards life and the Lions. He spent many hours in the garage sale barn checking out electrical equipment and sorting and packing donated items. Jim s family is waiting for the summer to have his memorial. Coupeville Wharf Project starts on March 14 We re working with the Sound Water Stewards for 3 days to remove a wall and prepare for installation of a new marine mammal display case. Contact Paul Bigelow for more information. Students of the Quarter on March 16 We have another opportunity to meet two super students from the high school this month. This meeting will be a potluck. Program on March 23 The latest news on Ryan s House is that they have raised enough money to take out a loan to purchase the motel in Coupeville! Deception Pass Park Cleanup Lions Zone 19H 7 Project 2016 Saturday April 23, 2016 we will meet to work together on our seventh annual Zone project at Deception Pass State Park. This project was begun by (then) ZC Paul Whelan in 2009, chaired by PZC John Kohlmann. It has continued to be a very enjoyable day of service, fellowship and accomplishment as Lions, Boy Scouts and other friends of Lions and the State Park spend a day cleaning, fixing, building and incidentally enjoying our wonderful park. We raised over $28,000 from the various auctions. Our total with ticket sales was about $38,000. With our estimated expenditures, we think there will be approximately $30,000 available for scholarships this year. WOW! SO, thanks to the 3 J s Jan Graham, Jackie Fruesier, and Joe Walck, for all the hard work that went into the planning, venue, catalog (AKA Auction Central), and ticket design and sales. Also a huge thanks to Vicky Reyes for her many hours of work and for managing the Guest Management team. Thanks also to Molly Hughes whose registration and checkout teams did an awesome job of efficiently processing the paperwork and collecting the funds. There were too many other Lions and non -Lions to mention here (and I would forget someone for sure) that participated in getting sponsors and donations, contributed ideas and energy to the planning, helped with setup, registration, check out, cleanup and other night-of activities. You are all amazing. Thank you all for making this a successful event. I would like to mention a couple of highlights of the evening. First the Joker, Jim Phay, once again selling cards for the dessert of the month. Also, Sue Waters for coordinating the dessert of the month and the Dessert Dash and all of the chefs that did or will contribute delicious deserts. Another Highlight was our Leos band that entertained us with some jazz music and a song, and the other students that not only served us, but read thank you letters from previous scholarship recipients. So thanks to everyone that helped in one way or another. You made my job as chair very easy. I appreciate how the Lions come together to make it happen. Dave Fish Second VP and Auction Chair.
