4 Upcoming Programs July 11 Meeting On Thursday, we will hold our annual Club Assembly to start the new year. Major topics include Rotary fellowship, Membership Development and our Fall Fund Raiser. President Randy Seelye says that Membership Development will be a major issue for the year. "We have lost a total of 11 club members in the last 14 months -- that's 20 percent of our total," Seelye - said, adding that four new members were inducted during the past year. "We need to keep our current members interested and excited about Rotary and develop a program to add quality members to unfilled classifications." Seelye said another five members may be dropping out of the club in the next two months July 18 Meeting "Mountain Lions, Abalone, and Wild Pigs" will be the topic for this week's program and the speaker will be 30 year veteran Fish and Game Department officer, Stanley desilva. As Patrol Lieutenant for the Sonoma County District, Stan is responsible for overseeing fish and game operations on land as well as in that portion of the ocean which is under the County's jurisdiction. Stan is a native son, born in Sebastopol.

5 Mystery Rotarian by Steve Davis Have you ever gotten yourself into a fury and done something stupid as a result? Our MR did. It was a '56 Plymouth and the only car he ever wrecked (so sez he). He almost succeeded in sinking a sailboat midway to Catalina at age 21. Our MR is a self made man of many vocations and interests and makes someone like me, who has done the same damn job for 23 years, envious. An LA native, he came to Santa Rosa in 1966 after Army reserves and worked for a short time as a beer salesman and visitor's guide publisher before going on to other ventures. He's married to his original true love and has never been sued. Announcements Japan Visitors Need a Home Students participating in the Santa Rosa-Kagoshima Student Exchange program (SRKSEP) will be arriving in Santa Rosa for a two-week stay beginning July 27. SRKSEP coordinator Bob Scott still needs to arrange a home stay for three of the students. If you have room in your home for one of the students, please contact Bob. Students will visit our club at the Aug. 1 meeting and will be attending the family picnic at Windsor Waterworks on Aug. 4. Family Picnic A day of fun in the sun is planned for Sunday, Aug. 4, at Windsor Waterworks. The cost will be $5 per person to use the water slides and for a barbecue lunch featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, salad and lemonade. (If you want other drinks, bring them along!) The event is being organized by Al Abramson.

6 IP Rotary News Committee Reports Program committee: Director Riki Intner reports that programs for the will be organized by a committee, with members taking responsibility for one or more months of meetings each. Vicki Lockner is serving as the committee coordinator. John Jones is organizing programs for the months of July and August; Shauna Lorenzen for September; and Dave Brown for October. Other committee members are Jerry Johnson and Warren Smith. Community Services committee: Director Pat Solar said a community service committee is being organized and will meet soon. The committee will be developing a plan to encourage applications for funding. Fund raising: Director Russ Locker reports that a committee will soon be meeting to organize the fall fund raiser. Members are Dave Brown, Shauna Lorenzen, Dan Davis, Eve Nighswonger, Ken Coker and Jerry Johnson. Preliminary plans for the 1997 golf tournament are already under way by Jeff Young and John Dolinsek. Comings and Goings Resignation: Club member Susan Agnew resigned from the club in June, citing increasing demands of managing two Eureka Bank branches.' She joined the club at the beginning of the year. A letter of resignation was accepted by club directors. Termination: Club member Mary Russell was dropped from the club by action of the board of directors on July 2. Mary, who joined the club in 1994 under the classification of Fund Development, was granted a threemonth leave of absence at the beginning of the year for personal reasons. She did not respond to club efforts over several months to reinstate her to active membership.

7 President's Corner year. Welcome to the Rotary We have finished our first decade in the Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary Club and we have an incredible legacy - judging by our anniversary breakfast, the energy it took for a successful golf tournament, the tremendous effort this Spring at Steele Lane School, and the fun of last week's debunking. I am very proud to be able to serve you and our club as we start our second decade. I'm honored because of what Rotary International means in the world and what it means in Santa Rosa. Our 1.19 million members and 28,018 clubs in 154 countries do make a difference in the world, and that's why I've chosen the theme, "Together we can make a difference" for this year. In the approaching year your Board of Directors will be trying to balance enjoyment of Rotary fellowship with service to our community, the world, and to our club. We will have a number of traditional events returning this year, including a family picnic at Windsor Water Works in August and the Valentine's party in February. We are also adding new ones, such as the Progressive Dinner being planned for November. But the main focus of our club is service to the community. We have been wildly successful for a number of years at raising money. Our Steele Lane Community Services Project is the biggest and by far the most expensive that our club has undertaken. Still, we have very healthy bank accounts, providing us the opportunity to make an even bigger impact in our community. We will need your continued commitment and your help to make this happen. 11 July 25 Speaker Bill Schoen will be discussing the phenomenal growth of amateur and professional roller hockey as well as some of the newer views regarding compensation for professional athletes. Bill has been the owner and manager of theoakland Skates, a pro roller hockey team, since 1993 and serves as Treasurer for Roller Hockey International, the entity which operates the professional roller hockey league. Bill also publishes five tourist guides in Hawaii and the Wine Country and a monthly newspaper called Hockey and Skating. He is a graduate ofuniversity ofredlands and UCLA Law School and resides with his wife and three children in Novato. Lost Wrist Watch (and big reward) John Dolinsek wishes the club to know that a player in the May 10lh golf tournament lost his Rolex watch and would be most grateful to have it returned. The gentleman is offering a 1000 (yes, thousand) dollar reward and assures us that "no questions will be asked". Ifyou have the watch or any information about where it might be, please call John at Used Computer Needed Have you upgraded your personal or business computer system recently? Ifyou have, our Rotary Club could use your used computer!! Club Secretary Jo Gennuso is using our club's aging 286 PC, using old Dos-driven commands (doesn't even have a mouse). We hope to buy new, state-of-the-art Rotary software, but we also need a newer computer on which to run it (hopefully a 486). Contact Jo ifyou can help Annual Dues Club Secretary Jo Gennuso has mailed bills to club members for our annual $120 Rotary dues. According to club bylaws, dues arc considered deliquent ifnot paid by Aug. 1. An additional $5 can be added to deliquent dues. Club Rosters It has been somewhatof a nightmare to keep all ofour club records up to date with everyone's home and business telephones, addresses, FAX numbers, etc. Past President Peter Treleaven recently distributed new pages for the club directory and that has been a tremendous help. But if any of your personal information changes, your club needs to know! Please contact bulletin editor Chris Feahr (who will update the roster published in the bulletin and has bulletin mailing lists) and/or Secretary Jo Gennuso, who keeps the official club roster. We are also considering publishing addresses. Is this of interest? Soon our Rotary District 5130 will have an Internet Web page with information about all 40 clubs in the district.

15 President's corner Our weekly meetings are the most important part ofthe Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary Club.. If our meetings are successful - both entertaining and meaningful then we can build on that foundation in everything else that we do. Attendance is also the cornerstone ofour organization. Rotary International has strict attendance rules -- more stringent that most service clubs - precisely because participation is what makes Rotary successful. S Rotary requires that each club members must: Attend or make up at least 60% ofregular meetings. -Attend at least 30% of this club's meetings. To make up for a missed meeting, club members can attend another Rotary Club meeting up to 14 days BEFORE the missed meeting or 14 days AFTER the miss. Also counting toward attendance is attending an Interact Club meeting (at the direction of the club), attending Rotary district assemblies, conferences or committees(at the direction of the district governor) or the Rotary International Convention. Club members MUST be dropped from the club if they miss four consecutive meetings without making up. The flip side of the attendance requirement, is the enjoyment of making up. Attending another Santa Rosa Rotary club can be interesting and informative, while attending in another state or country can be the highlight ofa trip. Club members agreed that regular board meetings will be held at 7 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Aug. 14th,at 7 a.m. at the Doubletree Inn private dining room (the entrance is next door to our Thursday meeting room).
