1 Volume 76 Issue 11 Tuesday 14 September 2010 Things to remember: Maldon Fellowship Weekend 2nd and 3rd Oct has been postponed. We, in conjunction with Kangan Institute, are in the process of planning a cocktail party/art show on Friday 12 November. Today s Speaker Michael Lynch Rotary Club of Keilor Michael Lynch from the Rotary Club of Keilor was our guest speaker. Michael was introduced by his wife, Jeanette. In addition to introducing Michael, Jeanette thanked us for the role we played in hosting our Canadian guests on their fellowship exchange earlier this year. Michael spoke to us on his recent cruise trip to Antarctica. He was ably assisted on power point by Simon Cookson. The tour started from Buenos Aires where among other sites visited was the grave of Eva Peron. From there the Falkland Islands were visited. The Falklands are essentially a part of Britain in the South Atlantic Ocean, complete with typically British pubs. Next stop was South Georgia island which was having a heat wave at the time. It was so hot that some penguin chicks were dying from heat stress. It was 6 degrees Celsius. South Georgia Island has an abundance of wild life including seals, penguins and albatross and no permanent human habitants since the waling stations shut down. To preserve the delicate balance of nature all visitors clothes are vacuumed inside and out to reduce the possibility of introducing disease. Ernest Shackleton s grave is on South Georgia Island. On the cruise down to Antarctica many ice bergs were encountered, including some up to seven stories high and 1km long. Both Christmas and New year s Eve were spent on the ship. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises were the order of the every day. Although sunset was not until 1am and sunrise was at 3am. In closing, Michael described Antarctica as one of the most beautiful places on earth and strongly recommended all to try to get there.

His classification is Banking Mobile Lender and he works with ANZ. Phil s mentor is Anne Rogers and both hail from Tasmania. It is yet to be decided which committee Phil will serve on. 3 Investment Superannuation Insurance Assistant Governor Mark Schirmer spoke briefly at our meeting today and reminded us all of Rotary s tremendous global capacity and asked us all the take deep pride in not just what the Rotary Club of Essendon does but also in what Rotary does internationally. The Four Way Test Rotary s Four Way Test was written by Chicago Rotarian Herbert J Taylor (RI President ) in The test contains the following four questions to apply to things we think, say or do: Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned?

5 Bits and Pieces Make-up Meetings Barbara Wyatt has returned from her visit to United Kingdom. While there she did three make ups and presented President Glenn with a banner from Rotary Club of Wembley & Willesden. Following classifications are urgently needed think about new members: Classifications; Chef, Caretaker, Curator, Cooper, Cleaner, Chimney Sweep & Curtain Maker. Weekly raffle Timothy Anderson won the weekly raffle this week and took home a bottle of wine. He made sure that the jackpot is left to a lucky member to draw next week. Trailer raffle The Trailer Raffle is on again this year. Roger Leask has asked all members to donate items, especially highly visual goods, to fill the trailer. Vocational Visit A site visit hosted by Frank Forgione to see the Australia Post eletter centre is planned for Tuesday 5/10/10 at 6.30pm. Contact Peter Baker.
