Leading on the front foot Simon had all Rotarians reaching for their pockets following a bevy of fines. 8 Club History Our 75 th Celebratory Year The following is an article taken from The official history from as edited by Steve Chandler Over the ensuing weeks all Rotarians of the club will be receiving a copy of the complete document for their personal records. In CONTACT we will each week include a section of document for your reading On the 30 th April 1935 meetings for the Rotary Club of Essendon moved to the Essendon Town hall where the luncheon cost was 2 shillings. The Rotary year originally ran from 1 st October until 30 th September and the charter President Bill Reid was re elected for a complete term on 1 st October The Rotary year was changed in 1936 to fall in line with the business year and so the new Rotary Year began on 1 st July 1936 and Cr P.M. Salmon was elected President. A fine box made by Rotarian Goldberg was presented to the club from Percy Oakley of the Rotary Club of Melbourne. The first project of the Rotary Club of Essendon was to invite pupils from each Essendon school to attend a Rotary luncheon on 15 th October, which was to become an annual event. The first community service project of the club was to visit the Mt Royal Home for the Aged. They also arranged for Santa Claus to pay a visit by aeroplane to children from the Mission of St John, Foundling Home of Broadmeadows and Salesian Boys Home of Sunbury, landing in nearby fields. In November 1936 a bowls competition was held between the Rotary Clubs of Essendon & Melbourne that became an annual event between adjoining clubs.
