Coming programs This Thursday Bring a Friend to Rotary Day, featuring guest speaker Ed Kramer ofindustrial Light and Magic, a special effects company which was founded by filmmaker George Lucas. This program could be one of the best ofthe year ~ we have rented a big screen television so you won't miss a thing! Kramer joined Light and Magic in 1994 to work on the film "Jumanji." He has been involved in computer animation from its earliest days in the 1970s. He received a bachelor ofscience degree in psychology from Duke University and a master ofarts in film production at the University of Texas. He has been in the entertainment industry for 15 years. He was also the technical director for "Twister" and for the soon-to-be released "101 Dalmations." ILM is based in San Rafael and features the largest and most advanced digital effects system in the entertainment industry. ELM has produced visual effects for more than 100 films, including "Mission Impossible," "Forest Gump," "Jurassic Park," "E.T., the Extra- Terrestrial," the "Indiana Jones" series and the "Star Wars" trilogy. ILM hasplayed a role in six of the top 10 box office movies. Bring a blanket: Our Interact Club at Elsie Allen High School isjoining the districtwide Rotary blanket drive to collect blanket for the needy. Please bring in new or near new (in good shape) blankets to this meeting. Interact Club members will be present to pick up blankets, said Jim McCracken, our Interact chairman. Election of Officers: Past President Peter Treleaven will lead the Dec. 5 meeting (President Randy is on vacation for a week), and will present the slate of officers for the years. Bylaw change: Also to be considered at the Dec. 5th meeting is a change in the club bylaws. This change has been adopted by the board of directors. Past presidents Dave Lorenzen and Nancy Aita have been updating the bylaws to conform with Rotary International. They propose:: "Article V Fees and Dues. Section 3 - Each member shall be obligated to pay approximately seventy-five dollars ($75.00) for "recognition" during the Rotary year in a manner consistent with Rotary
fellowship. A.ecord of each member's assessment will be maintained for the fiscal year." The change is in italics. The bylaws read $50 for recognition. Rationale for proposed change: It is not the intent ofany governing body or presiding chair of this club to increase the amount any member may be "recognized," only to allow for the variance in recognition between a married member as opposed to a single member, as is currently practiced. Members who are married receive recognition for a spouses birthday and an anniversary, when single members are not. This means a variance ofbetween $65 and $95, depending on a member's marital status. A value of "approximately $75.00" will allow for this variance. Dec. 12 meeting Santa Rosa High School's ChamberSingers perform on Dec. 12 A special family Christmas program is planned, featuring the Santa Rosa High School Chamber Singers. Vicki Lockner will be collecting gifts being brought for the Giving Tree Festival the hearts were distributed in November and there will be small gifts for the children of Rotarians attending. The Chamber Singers group was founded in 1977 and is recognized throughout the state as an outstanding choral ensemble. The group is directed by Dan Earl.
? Mystery Rotarian Our latest MR is totally California. He was born in Fresno and lived there through college (Fresno State), then went to practice "business" in Los Angeles in what they call "Bunker Hill." Petaluma was next, for a short time, and then to Santa Rosa where he got a union job and was trained by Buster (not Finch, but another Sunrise Rotarian). He then quit/downsized the union job and hooked up with one of the most prominent large institutions in town. Our MR is married and has a 5-year-old daughter, is an "improving" golfer and enjoys helping non-profit charities manage their money. Free CPR for life from Carl Jacobson for anyone who can guess the identity of our MR. Steve Davis Board of Directors New Member: Directors have approved Phil Sitzman, owner of Lettershop Printing, as a new ~ member under the classification of "Retail Printing." He is sponsored by Eve Nighswonger. Pursuant to club bylaws, "Any member who has an objection to the election ofthe proposed member shall notify the board in writing, stating reasons for the objections" within 10 days. Resignation: Directors accepted the resignation of Tom Eakin, a nine-year member of the club. Eakin resigned because of increasing duties at Vacu-Dry, and family responsibilities. Eakin is a former board member and treasurer ofthe club. '
As we pass Thanksgiving and head toward the Christmas holidays, I would like to pass along my thought - and thanks - to club members who have organized major activities and events during the past month: Del and Harriett Raby: Past District Gov. Del and his wife went out of their way to make the club's first Progressive Dinner a success. The Nov. 9 event drew 45 people - and was a rousing success judging from all of the positive comments during and since the event. It was a mysterious, fun event for all who attended. Only Del knew who would be where during the evening ~ and after six homes for soups/salads and six homes for entrees, everyone arrived within a 3 minute period at my home for dessert, and a lively party.. Del and Harriett made the soup, the salad and cooked the scalloped potatoes and prepared the vegetables. It literally took them a whole week to prepare!! An encore performance is already being discussed for next year but Del and Harriett will need more cooks in the kitchen! Art King: President-elect Art made a most impressive presentation to other Sonoma County Rotarians at the monthly Association of Sonoma County Rotary Clubs meeting last Thursday, which our club hosted at the Fountaingrove Country Club. Art spoke of our club's membership development program a topic which can be very dry. But his lively presentation drew a lot of interest and sparked a lively debate among Rotary Clubs on various ways to add quality members to their clubs. Art and his wife, Irene, also hosted a club Fireside a week earlier, which was a good opportunity to mix and visit. Vicki Lockner: Vicki has served as the Program Coordinator for the year, overseeing the efforts ofa committee which has divided up montly responsibilities for meetings. I think the meetings have been oustanding this year and the three coming up this month (which Vicki personally organized) should be great. Those bringing in the top programs so far this year are John Jones (July and August), Shauna Lorenzen (September), Dave Brown (October) and Jerry Johnson (November). -- Randy Seelye

Eyeglasses for Haitians International Service Director Dale Zumfekle reported to the Board of Directors that plans are under way for an International Service eyeglass project in Haiti next June. The project is being led by John Jones, who discussed the idea with club members in November when he presented a slide show on Haiti. Much like the Mayan, Mexico, eyeglass project two years ago, four to five people - primarily Rotarians - plus optometrist Dr. Les Shipley will go to Haiti for about five days to fit people with eyeglasses. The club still has several thousand pairs of eyeglasses left over from the 1994 project. The eyeglass prescriptions arestored on a computer and then the proper glasses are selected once a person's eyes are examined. During the Mexico trip about 600 people received eyeglasses. Community Services Community Services Director Pat Solar is accepting applications for Community Service projects, following the club's successful Tropical Paradise fund raiser. About S8,000 is available from the club to support projects throughout the community. Pal said she has already received several applications for funding. They will be reviewed by the Community Services committee with recommendations made to the board ofdirectors for funding. Paul Harris Live? Club members have contributed S61.84 per person toward their Paul Harris Fellowships during the first six months of the year, according to Foundation Chairman and Past President Dave Lorenzen. That total isjust $3.16 short of the S65 goal set by District Governor Larry Kavanaugh for the 40 clubs in District Our Sunrise Rotary Club goal is $100 per person through next June, which appears well within reach. Last year we contributed a total of $212 per person to the Rotary Foundation -- the highest per capita total ofany club in the district ~ with the total including more than $4,000 contributed to the Croatia project.
