21 WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH Letter from Melody Haworth... Christmas eve with friends and Christmas day with my host family. Christmas here is alot less commercial and more generalized than the Ji,S. I mean by generalized is that there is more emphasis placed on time spent with friends and family than on the holiday itself. Of course they have a x-mas tree and midnight mass - but the whole traditional x- mas known by you and I wasn't really of great importance here. I am of course speaking of my area in Belgium. It may be different in other areas. I did some traveling to Germany and to Paris over the vacation and spent time with friends. January I really hit head on in my studies because I was able to understand alot more - therefore am aule to follow and do my assignments like my classmates. I did some changing in my schedule to add in economics since its an obligation for CA schools, and now I am ending each day at 4:10 except Wednesdays - that day I finish at 12:10. My teachers are terrific here as are the students. Everyone is willing to help and believe me I take advantage of it. I did some weekend trips to different regions in Belgium. Last weekend for instance I went to the Ardennes with my gym teacher and about 40 other people (both families and students) There was a retreat for 2 1/2 days to enjoy hiking, walking, biking, and many other activities. We were lodged ia^chalets right above a beautiful lake and surrounded by a pine forest. was really beautiful in this section of Belgium they speak German. I had the opportunity to go on a day trip to Germany with a German lady who speaks french. We all had a fabulous time. Unfortunately because I had changed my schedule, I haven't been able to visit Rotary but once a month. I do keep in contact with the members who are also always willing to help. My host Rotary club has periodical night meetings when the gentlemen may bring their wives. They usually have some sort of slide exhibition or a well known speaker. When i usually eat with Rotary it is held Monday afternoons at noon. We start with announcements and everyone is given an agenda of the last weeks meeting. We then sit down to a well catered meal and finish the meeting off with a speaker or a presentation of a new member. We have had talks on law, insurance, prison, medicine, and other important topics that usually involve the careers of one or more members of the club. I would have to say the average age of the members is 45 or 50 and all of the members are very qualified in their positions (id. surgeons, attorneys, notaries - which is a position that is W*h a lawyer and a notary) The language is really coming along, I. t't believe I have been here already for 5 months! The upcoming activities Lam participating in is a two-week mini-exchange with my school in Madera, Portugaland another mini-exchange with my school for 3 days in Paris. I will keep in touch and let you all know how they go! Take care and keep in touch! P.S. I had just been notified by my real mom that I have been accepted to Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio! I have one other 1st choice U thattm waiting for the reply, but so far I'm on my way! I had applied in Belgium and wajs really worried about the outcome! I'm so excited!!!!
