Box 502, Silverdale, WA GENERAL MEETING PRESENTATIONS The November General Meeting is fast approaching. It s a great time to review and share what we have learned regarding growing and showing dahlias this past year. Dave and Leone Smith will lead a round table discussion at the upcoming meeting, to share ideas and help us in our quest to grow (and possibly show) the PERFECT dahlia next year. Dave and Leone Smith will also bring in daffodil bulbs to be sold at the meeting. The Smiths have been growing daffs for years, and it will be a real treat to have these early spring flowers waking up in our gardens next year. The bulbs will be sold by the dozen and the minimum price per dozen will be $3.00. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the club! Colin Walker provided a very informative presentation on his process for harvesting Our October meeting and election gave us a new President, Chet Haus, a new Trustee, Steffany Mootry, and a new pair of Co-Recording Secretaries, Allyn Arnold and Debbie Kurre. The retiring officers, Drew Brant, Chuck Feth, and Wanda Novak turned over the reins at the November 6th Board meeting. Election Results Bradley Aaron B FD PR/WH dahlia seeds to produce new varieties. His presentation highlighted the time, energy, process and control required to develop the beautiful dahlias he has disseminated to the public. A big THANK YOU goes to Colin for coming to our meeting and sharing his knowledge with us! Colin Walker, Dave and Leone Smith A huge THANK YOU goes out to all retiring, returning and newly elected Officers and Board Members! Retiring President Drew Brant said, It is a pleasure to belong to a club with such active, participating members. Congratulations to our new officers! You may not know how the American Dahlia Society and the Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers interact, or what the stated purpose is of each organization. If you want to know how joining these organizations will benefit you and what they do, check out the information on pages 4 and 5. You can join these organizations through our Treasurer, Bill Jones, and now is the perfect time. If you have any questions, be sure to talk to Drew, our FNWDG representative, or Leone, our ADS representative, at the next General meeting. 1

3 2013 KCDS Dahlia Harvest Many Hands Make Light Work Thanks to the outstanding club participation, our dahlia tubers have now been dug, divided, labeled, and stored, and are awaiting the 2014 KCDS tuber sale. On Oct. 26th we had 15 volunteers at the Silverdale Post Office, 9 at Port Gamble, and 11 at the Fairgrounds. Additionally, 3 volunteers helped dig the West Hills Post Office tubers on a separate day Eleven volunteers helped Eric Anderson cut down the dahlias at the President s Hall garden at the Fairgrounds. Eric donates many of these tubers to our annual dahlia sale. The Port Gamble dig Bill and Nancy Jones, along with Port Gamble gardener Mark, oversaw the planting and care of these dahlias throughout the year. Tubers awaiting division. A total of 4,584 tubers were packaged, representing 402 varieties. Good times were had while 34 members participated in mentoring, dividing and labeling tubers. Twelve members were available on Nov. 6th to inventory and store the dahlias. Not all dahlias made it past the experienced Quality Control volunteers, who culled those tubers that did not meet the club s standards. Kaile and Wendy Brant outdid themselves with the scrumptious food they provided at the Nov. 2nd dividing party. Thank you ladies! 3

4 The Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers (FNWDG) KCDS Representative: Drew Brant The Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers was formed on November 18, Many people have difficulty understanding the difference between the Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers and the American Dahlia Society, and why they are both very important to the success of a local dahlia society. Local dahlia clubs come under the umbrella of the Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers. The present number of clubs in the Federation is fourteen eleven affiliated and three associated. Each local club has one representative on the Federation Board, ensuring that each club has an equal say in what happens at the Federation level. The Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers in turn comes under the umbrella of the American Dahlia Society, along with all other American Dahlia Society conference groups in Canada and the United States. Purpose and Objectives of the FNWDG To provide an organization of dahlia societies with common goals for Northwest dahlia hobbyists who grow and exhibit dahlias To provide leadership in dahlia culture and improve, through experiments and research, the quality of exhibition, garden and cut flower cultivars To educate and train dahlia judges through field experiences and workshops To support a trial garden with financial assistance and expertise To promote inter-society communication by proposing solutions for common problems To provide yearly publications dedicated to the latest advances in dahlia culture and dahlia news around the world To encourage the free exchange of new ideas and methods concerning dahlias and support such innovations as merited Benefits of membership Two informative workshops per year (spring and summer) Newsletter and Dahlia Annual with a membership roster, exhibitor division standings, allotted exhibitor numbers, and a list of all designations for Federation judges Show book Membership Information: Individual Membership: $10.00 per individual Family Membership: $15.00 per family 4
