3 VOLUME 34 March 3, 1994 EDITOR: Steve Olsen FAX: PUBLISHER: Jeff Young Stuff from the Editor's Wastebasket: At the risk of creating extreme boredom in the audience we may have to suffer some serious blank space in the bulletin until your new editor gets up to speed. If I can overcome the technology of this beast then I can address the content. Anyone who would like to host a future program in the TRAVELOGUE SERIES is invited to talk to Dale Zumfelde to schedule tlie event. We would love to hear stories or see pictures of your travels and get a report of any special event you may have participated in and would like to share with tlie members. Russ Lockner announced at the last meeting die creation ofa Scholarship fund to honor tlie memory of Jeff Abrahamson. This scholarship will be through the Santa Rosa Parks and Recreation Department to fund outdoor activities to youth who could not otherwise afford it. The club will provide $500 and Jeffs firm, The George Peterson Agency, will match that amount. In passing die hat we collected 3/5 of the $500. With one more pass this week we should cover the $500 witiiout getting into die budget. v Drew Turner is asking for RYLA applications not later than March 28. This is quite a successful program so if you know any Youthful Leaders tiiink about getting them on board. Del announced that diere will be cocktails at his home before die Association Dinner in Cloverdale on March 23. And a hearty welcome was given to Christina and Ashley Victoria, visiting gramma and granpa all the way from New York! ilx>ifirwiniiirw'''w*ii'trirtinii I ",.,1, ^i,p --' --" ' \
4 Mystery Rotarian This Rotarian grew up in Fresno, he left as soon as he could go. He went to Hoover High, then Fresno State, where him, they tried to educate. With a Business degree he did graduate then began his Bank career in LA. He says; "It's a great place to visit, and to play, but not a place where I want to stay." In 87 he came here and found heaven. The fact that he had to work with a "Buster" didn't dim the Redwood Empire luster. In High School he was an athlete, and learned tiiat girls could be really neat. His daughter "Emma" from a marriage past, has shown him tiiat kids grow up really fast. He misses Fresno to some degree, the warm weather and his family. He was one of four sons you see, but, Santa Rosa is where he wants to be. Now he's single and fancy free, but doesn't shirk his responsibility. In school his favorite study topics, were Finance, the Stock Market, & Economics. A Mystery Rotarian he's never been, and after this rhyme he may never be again. by Archie Julian POST NO BILLS (THIS SPACE FOR HIRE)
5 Advertising? Gary Doolittle is selling space in the Official Program for the Rotary District Conference. Please talk to Gary for the details and sign up now. What a great way to expose yourself! RECOGNITION CORNER What with all of the official, semi official, and just plain unofficial business going on the recognition was surgically precise. We have your basic well lighted (lit?) birthdays for Dr. Franke and Ms. Lockner-. We have your Rotary Anniversaries: 5 years for Mike Sass, 6 years for Vicki Lockner, and 7 years for Steve Olsen (who?) Why does the "tiiree strikes and your in" start sounding appropriate at this point? Moving right along to Dale Z, a well deserved tiianks for the bulletin but $10 bucks please for the "errors". (Perhaps I should quit while I'm still solvent). Seems that Bruce Reyes went to Yosemite and got a new Pathfinder (how many transmissions?). Archie went to Yosemite too but quickly pointed out diat it was not with Bruce. Finally, Jeff Young was NOT fined for the condition of Nancy's bulletin and he was NOT fined for the Blazer. Russ Lockner was, however, recognized for sniveling. Please note the new FAX number on the masthead ( ) any and all newsy, infonnative orotherwise printable matter will be most welcome. Ifyou don't send anything in you will be subjected to more ofthefollowing: Weasel Willie, mean as hell, dropped his sister down the well; his mother sighed while drawing water, "Gosh, it's tough to raise a daughter."

11 I VOLUME 35 March 10, 1994 EDITOR: Steve Olsen FAX: PUBLISHER: Jeff Young GLEANINGS FROM THE TABLE SCRAPS Usually each meeting generates a number of items that, it seems, ought to be repeated in the bulletin for the edification of those not present and to refresh the memory of those that were present. At times it also seems that repetition would be good to overcome the information lost to the general uproar. Now at the last meeting I fear there was little in the way of new info so here I am trying to fill space with a little steam of consciousness (use a very light fly, a midge maybe?) and wondering if I should try to figure out how to import graphics into this silly program. Anyway, the major announcement for this week is that the Club will NOT pay for your dinner at the Cioverdale Crab Feed. Oh well, this one is actually well worth the price. Del promised to keep HIS promise of coctails before the dinner (March 23). Gary Doolittle sez thanks, but I don't need anymore ads for the conference program - he/she who hesitates is lost. An announcement begging for more elaboration concerning our World Community Service Project in the Cozumel/Yucatan area: Now if we could get the club to pay for a group trip I think we could really get into this project. PROPOSED FOR MEMBERSHIP: LARRY MARTIN - TRAVEL JO GENNUSCO - CORPORTATE TRAVEL
12 Mysler^LRotariaa Our Mystery Rotarian is known real well, about his favorite sport, a story he will tell. To play you need three legs to make a tripod, to keep your balance and not look really odd. You must stay behind the line, until the right time, or be called off side, as the rcfwon'l let you slide. This Rotarian's kids started real young, tales of their exploits often go unsung. Jordan began at the young age of fourt he looked like a "Pacman" racing around the floor. At seven it was Andrew and Craig's turn too, Move fast and stop quickly they learned to do. To glide or slide or dodge and slash, helps them avoid a bashing crash. In Canada our Rotarian first saw this game, but played it not, until to California he came, He's now the Jr. League Leader, or he may have said chief baby sitter. His wife Wendy is a college teacher, and a Family Nurse Practicioner. She hates to watch when her little guys, play against other boys twice their size. Players proclaim "We're really tough!" and to play they are padded with lots of stuff, but, unfortunately too often, it's not enough, because, like dealing with Nancy, things can get really rough. by Archie Julian
13 RECOGNITION CORNER I think there were a lot of late arrivals but only two notable entrances: Rolf Wessman entered sniveling and Bruce Reyes entered with a "skirt" comment that everyone decided should be left as ambiguous as it started. Archie received appropriate recognition for his birthday and for the lovely (week old) bouquet. Bob Scott also celebrated another. Bob Jarvis was recognized for his first anniversary in the club but it cost him an extra fiver for "uncooperative office staff". Nancy awarded Buster five Nancy bucks for sitting at a different table but then promptly relieved him of that and a few more for winning the raffle. Phil Hulen found that it does not pay to buy $10 worth of raffle tickets to win $10 at a 20/30 club meeting and then get recognized for $10 at his Rotary meeting. Nancie Mika, with a little verbalization correctly identified Chicago as the location of the first Rotary Meeting and, widi a little help from her friends, 1905 as the year of that meeting. Randy Seelye High Fived the fact that his grandmother will be 100 on the 13th. Dr. Bruce sent a birthday card to Bob Aita, 5 months early! (the famous Bob Dunn data base strikes again). Ken Coker did not know that the first Rotary Luncheon meeting was held in Oakland in Fine-ally Sergeant at Arms Steve Owles had to confess to a weekend with good friends at Incline. Tom Eakin knew right away that the Mystery Rotarian was Steve Herron - and now we all know a bit more about Steve - just one step closer to tlie big blue badge. Tlie question remains, will I run out of "Willie" material or will the bulletin fill up with contributions from the membership?? Little Willie from the mirror Sucked the mercury all off Thinking, in his childish error, It would cure his whooping cough.. Willie's mother, at the funeral, Remarked to Mrs. Brown; "Twas a chilly day for Willie When the mercury went down."

19 VOLUME 36 March 17, 1994 ^ EDITOR: Steve Olsen FAX: PUBLISHER: Jeff Young GLEANINGS FROM THE TABLE SCRAPS Since the hike & bike in Annadel went so well, Russ is planning another "adult pace" event. This one to be a 25 mile bike road ride. The event will start on April 2 at the Airport Club and will be, in Russ's words, "slowish and flatish". Be prepared to pedal offat 9:00 AM. HOST FAMILIES WANTED This summer Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary and Friends of Kagoshirna will host fifteen high school age students from our sister club in Kagoshirna, Japan. The students will arrive in Santa Rosa on July 29th and depart on August 13th. A variety of activities will be planned for them which will include opportunities for family outings. Past host families highly praise the program. If you are interested or want further information please call Dan Lambert, Bob Scott, or Vicki Lockner. EVENTS!!! 20 DearS: I am wnung in response to your request for additional information. In block number 3 of the accident reporting form I put "Lost presence of mind" as die cause of my accident. You said in your letter diat I should explain more fully, and I trust dial the following details will be sufficient. I am a bricklayer by trade. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the roof of a new six story building. When I completed my work, I discovered diat I had about 500 pounds of brick left over. Rather than carry the bricks down by hand, I decided to lower diem in a barrel by using a pulley which, fortunately, was attached to die side of die budding at the sixdi floor. Securing the rope at the ground level, I went up on the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded it with bricks. Then I went back to the ground and untied the rope, holding it tighdy to insure a slow descent of die 500 pounds of bricks. You will note in box 11 of die accident reporting form diat I weigh 135 pounds. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of die rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a radier rapid rate up die side of die building. In the vicinity of the diird floor, I met the barrel coming down. This explains the fractured skull and broken collarbone that I have noted. Slowed only slighdy, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping undl die fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into die pulley. This explains die lacerations of my right hand. Fortunately, by diis time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold Ughdy to die rope in spite of my pain. At approximately die same Ume, however, die barrel of bricks hit die ground - and the bottom fell out of die barrel. Devoid of the weight of die bricks, the barrel now weighed about 50 pounds. I refer you again to my weight of 135 pounds in box number 11. As you might imagine, I began a rapid descent down die side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met die barrel coming up. This accounts for die two fractured ankles and die lacerations of my legs and lower body. The encounter with die barrel slowed me down enough to lessen my injuries when 1 fell into die pile of bricks and, fortunately, only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, diat as I lay diere on the bricks, in pain, unable to stand, and watching the empty barrel six stories above me, I again lost my presence of mind I let go of die rope. -Willif- -)
21 RECOGNITION CORNER In President Nancy's absence we had our first opportunity to experience the "fine" hand of President-elect Dan Davis. Ifthe initial lesson is an accurate predictor of the future we should be able to cancel all further fund raisers!! In any event: Archie got the chance to purchase a marvelous gift for Susan's birthday; Buster had to pony up for the Birthaversary, he married Marilyn on her birthday. We thought that meant he got off cheap but he says it just means he has to buy two presents. Now then, it seems that Leroy got his picture in the Hunting and Fishing News (Again?) with some ducks. The ducks were less than thrilled to share this photo op with Leroy. As he said the "shoot and release program" has not yet been perfected. Frank had to acknowledge his recent ski trip but declined to eleaborate. Steve (Olsen since there is more than one), got nicked for the recent office move. The change is not in the directory. It seems that it is no excuse that the move happened after the deadline for the directory Gary (Doolitde) had a lengthy comment on the above which caused President elect Dan to fine him for practicing law without a license Carol had to confess to a decadent weekend in Hawaii courtesy of her employer. This employer seems to be a bit confused about the state of the business...rewards for record sales and layoffs for lack of business...carol sez the screwdrivers were great anyway. Peter just got back from a ski weekend with an old friend and needed to leave some cash with the club for leaving Marie and the kids at home. Jerry Johnson didn't know who tlie Mystery Rotarian was but he sez that because he didn't get a bulletin...steve O sez that's because bulletin central had no address, Dan sez that will cost, Steve...oh well...

36 MYSTERY ROTARIAN Our Mystery Rotarian from Turlock came, to seek a fortune and fame iu the selling game. Actually he followed his spouse to keep peace iu tlie house, when a job offer she received was too good to he believed. His father built houses as a Geueral Contractor, to him truality is and was a major factor. His mother was the church organist and the Choir director, Four boys she raised, for which she deserves a lot of praise. He lirst met his wife at U.O.P. as high school scholars, in a tooting bee. She lived in Redding, far to the North Just too far from Turlock, to commute back and forth. Much later in life again they met as in the horn section they both sat. They met again and again and eventually began, a love story that has yet to end, and has resulted in a son named Ian. This Rotarian is trained as a teacher of music, He can carry a tune and never loose. In high school he played in the band, as the drum major he carried a stick in his hand Prior to attending UC Stanislus State, He toured Europe, he said the trip was "...great". With the U.S. Honor Band and Choir, he did play music for crowds by the hour. He keeps a cat, dog and fish as pets, respectively named "Mouse", "London", a name the fish lias not got yet. Can you guess who this person may he, if not, come to die meeting to hear and see, this Rotarian talk about himself to you and me. by Archie Julian

Terry Cheney playing tlie role of mafioso managed to raise $561 for tlie American Diabetes Foundation and incidentally got her boss out of "jail". -N President Nancy noted that she got her traffic ticket dismissed and added anodier $100 to tlie foundaton, plus tlie club $50.
