NEWSLETTER Number 42 May - June 2018 The Friends of Two Rivers Mansion, a 501(c)(3) organization McGavock Pike, President Larry Weber's Remarks - With summer around the corner, let s get ready to enjoy our Two Rivers Mansion and the grounds around it. The Friends group has many engaging activities planned, and we want to see you along with all our guest having a good time and participating. Remember, the Donelson Farmer s Market will be setting up in our lawn this summer. While this is not a Friend s planned activity, we will certainly benefit by the exposure. Hopefully, many new visitors will see and appreciate the Mansion. The Friends group will have a presence at the Farmer s Market and it would be wonderful to have many volunteers available to explain our role in preserving this historic home and plantation. Get ready, come walk through the wooded area behind the mansion, study the Master Plan and be prepared to interact with guests. Hope to see you soon. Property History - In 1798 Giles Harding Jr. moved his family from Virginia to Tennessee. Along with his brother, Thomas, they purchased bottom land along the Little and Big Harpeth Rivers (present day Williamson County) where he built a house. Following his death in 1810 his children rose to prominence as one of Nashville s leading families. John Harding was the oldest son of Giles and he bought 250 acres in McSpadden s Bend that became known as The River Farm. The farm grew to 1293 acres before he relocated to a second 250 acre tract located along
Richland Creek six miles southwest of Nashville. That farm continued to expand around the federal style home he had built reaching 3,800 acres. In addition to the farming operation John began investing in thoroughbred horses and the land became known as Belle Meade. In 1828 John s son, William Giles Harding, assumed operation of the River Farm until he took control of his father s holdings at Belle Meade. His grandson, John Harding II, moved to the River Farm plantation in 1853 and built a house he called Bellevue. That structure was destroyed by fire during the Civil War years. Giles son and John s brother, William Harding, purchased 476 acres in McSpadden s Bend from Willie Barrow in 1819 and relocated to Nashville from Virginia in By 1832, when he died, he had amassed over 1000 acres and 70 slaves. Much of the acreage was made up of the original Nicholas Coonrood and David Buchannan lands. The plantation was called Two Rivers and the main cash crop was cotton. William also traded in livestock, especially hogs. In 1931, William married Elizabeth Clopton, an 18 year old neighbor living at Clover Bottom. Elizabeth became pregnant later that year and unfortunately, William died on May 13, 1832, four-and-a-half months before the baby was born. His estate included 1081 acres, 77 slaves, and $ Elizabeth received 1/3 of the property, the house (1802 House) and the proceeds of the sale of farming equipment and household furnishing. The remainder of the estate was placed in a trust for his daughter, William Elizabeth (Willie) Harding, which was to be transferred to her and her husband upon her marriage. Her cousin, William Giles Harding, became her guardian and helped to manage the property along with their uncle, David Harding. West Woods Trail improved with a Foot Bridge - The West Woods located between the Greenway and the TR Golf Course are home to several ruins of former structures that were part of the Two Rivers Plantation and farm. Among those are several stone walls that separated fields, the foundation ruins of a barn and machinery storage area, the foundation ruins and footprint of a dairy barn, and the remains of a spring house and ice storage structure.
In the winter of 2017 a trail to the ice house location was created by a Parks ground crew and then this past February, another crew cut a trail to the dairy barn site. These are loop trails that run off a main entry trail which begins near the south end of the parking lot across the park road from the dog park. Both loop are marked at the main trail splits. The Spring House loop cuts through a picturesque area where stepping stones provide the way through a shallow spring fed stream and until recently required climbing up a 4 foot embankment. As of Saturday, March 31st that climb is no longer necessary. Thanks to the hard work of Joey Syracuse a foot bridge now spans the creek to the return trail. Joey is a member of Boy Scout Troop 777 and the bridge was his community project required to complete the requirements for Eagle Scout eligibility. The work was done in two phases and members of the Troop assisted Joey in the work. Materials were donated in part by the Hermitage Home Depot and he was supported throughout the process by grandfather, Thomas Syracuse, and dad, Councilman Jeff Syracuse. The Friends of Two Rivers wishes to express gratitude to Joey and Troop 777 for their efforts in making this area more accessible for the community to explore and better appreciate this part of the farming history of the Two Rivers Stock Farm/Plantation
The Big Payback - is a community-wide, online giving day hosted by The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. On May 2 from 12:01 am to 12:00 pm the Friends of Two Rivers Mansion will be participating along with other non-profits in the 40 county area served by the Community Foundation. Your gifts are eligible to be amplified during the day by bonuses, incentives, and prizes made possible by The Big Payback s generous sponsors. Once again donations can be made during the 24 hour period from 12:01 am to 12:00 pm on May 2nd. We look forward to your support which will enable more programing and accessibility to the Mansion and to the history of the McGavocks and the Two Rivers Stock Farm and Plantation. Hip Donelson Farmer s Market at the Mansion - Beginning next Friday, May 4th the Hip Donelson Farmer s Market will be relocating to the lawn of Two Rivers Mansion. The Market hours will run from 4 pm to 7 pm. There s ample parking, lots of shade, food trucks will be on the circular drive, the music stage begins at 5 pm, and the backdrop for the market will be formed by the grandeur of the 1850 s era Italianate Two Rivers Mansion. For those who have never been inside the Mansion, tours will be available beginning June 1, and to honor the relocation of the Market, all new memberships with the Friends of Two Rivers, or any renewals of a current membership during a market visit will receive a free print of the Mansion or 1802 House. Mutts at the Mansion - The next Friends sponsored event at the Mansion will take place on Saturday, May 19th from 10 am to 2 pm. This event is
called Mutts at the Mansion and the focus of the day will be on dog adoption. But, regardless of whether you are in the hunt for a new canine companion or just want to enjoy the day on the Mansion grounds, there will lots to do and see. A flyer for the event is included as the last page and you are encourage to print some copies and help us advertise by posting them at the different businesses you visit in the community. Nashville Symphony Returns to the Mansion - Mark the calendar and save the date. On Tuesday, June 26th the Nashville Symphony will return to the lawn of Two Rivers Mansion for a summer concert that will begin at 7:30 p.m. Selections will include That s Entertainment, William Tell Overture, Armed Force Medley, fan favorites by John Williams and other classical and popular pieces. This is a FREE community concert sponsored by the Nashville Symphony and Metro Parks and is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an evening of music under the stars. Pack a picnic, bring a lawn chair or blanket and come celebrate the summer with us. Membership - Memberships with the Friends of Two Rivers available in categories that range from a minimum of $20 a year up to corporate memberships of $2,000 a year or $3,000 for two years. All membership fees are considered donations for tax purposes. Friends members are admitted free at all Friends sponsored events at the Mansion upon presentation of a current membership card. Admission generally range from $5 to $10 per person so its easy to see that the basic membership cost is far less than several individual admissions. Parking is free and traffic is not a problem, and, your support enables the organization to continue offering more opportunities while at the same time continuing the restoration and preservation work that's at the heart of our mission statement. This year the Hip Donelson Farmer s Market will relocate to the Mansion grounds and the Friends organization will have a tent as part of the Market where membership can be purchased or renewed. In recognition of the relocation of the Market to the Mansion all new or renewed memberships will receive a free print of the Mansion or the 1802 House.
