1 su\n»[{osa ROTARY CLUB R.I. Hugh Archer DISTRICT GOVERNOR Jack Vallerga Kent Seegmiller -ELECT GaryDoolittle SECRETARY Steve Olsen TREASURER Tom Eakin PAST Bob Dunn ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 513 DIRECTORS: CLUB SERVICE COMMUNITY SERVICE VOCATIONAL SERVICE Leroy Carlenzoli INTERNATIONAL SERVICE SERGEANT-AT-ARMS Chartered June 30, 1986 Meets every Thursday 7:15 a.m. At the Sheraton Round Barn Inn P.O. Box Santa Rosa, CA Meeting of August 3,1989 KSRO/KHTTARE THE TALK OF THE TOWN Terry DeVoto, new general manager of Santa Rosa's talk radio AM station, KSRO and hit music FM station, KHTT, was our speaker last meeting. A native of San Francisco, Terry has been in radio for quite some time, starting at KFOGin SF, then KSFO and eventually moving to KYUU. At KYUU he became national sales manager then general sales manager and vice president and general manager in When KYUU was sold he joined Fuller-Jeffrey Broadcasting, the company who has recently purchased KSRO/ KHTT. He serves as general manager for the two stations, headquartered on College Avenue. Fuller & Jeffrey are real people who have had real careers in radio. Thus they understand radio and approach it not just as a business, but as something they love and understand. Their first radio station purchase was a New Hampshire station operating out of a dilapidated trailer. They now own radio stations around the country, including Sacramento, Chico, Modesto, Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa. Research conducted by F/J in ourarea examined "needs" of ourcommunity. There are five radio stations in Santa Rosa. KREO was a teen-oriented top-40 format. To help indicate a change had taken place, F/J changed the call letters to "KHTT - The Heat." The target is now people in their 20's (younger& older, too) because of changing tastes in the market. KSRO has remained a talk radio format with the addition of some national shows, less emphasis on strictly local programming.ksro is competing with the best talk shows in the nation with KGO and KCBS. In fact, the #2 radia station in Santa Risa is KGO, with KCBS ;a close #3. KSRO was simply not strong enought at number 16to compete without some help. Jim Grady and Merle Ross, two popular local talents still have the a.m. slot between5-9 on weekdays. At 9-11 a.m. is Rush Limbaugh, a very controversial and very entertaining right-leaning national talk show. Michael Jackson (no, not that Michael Jackson!) is on from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local talk show host Larry Chiaroni is from 1-2 p.m., with possible expansion of this show in the future. From 2-4 p.m. is Dr. David Viscott. From 4-7 p.m., Sally Jesse Raphael and from 7-10 p.m., Tom Snyder. The Mystery Theater is for late night listening. Terry explained how the Arbitron rating diary system works to rate radio stations. The results of these findings rate radio stations and help advertisers _ determine where and when to spend their advertising dollars. It is DeVoto's sincere desire that the community will respond to the new ownership with as much feedback as possible. ATTABOYS& ATTAGALS Immediate Past President Bob Dunn was pinch-hitting for President Kent Seegmiller. Bob did a great job, of course. We have a new post office box - please make a note of it: Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary P.O. Box Santa Rosa, CA The briefcase is back! That's right. Our historyis not lost. A kindlypersonfound our briefcase in South Santa Rosa and returned it to us. Downtown Rotary is putting on an Auto Classic to benefit the Salvation Army. Dates are August 26 & 27 at Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. They're looking for classic and antique cars for display. Contact them if you can help. The baseball bash still needs victims. The game is August 17th.Get your cash and/or reservation in to NOW!! Ray Gorman reminds us all to get in shape with the in-crowd at the Nautilus center on Piner Road. The small group meets at 7:00 a.m. It costs $150. to enroll and $25. per month thereafter. What price youth and beauty? You are hereby reminded once more DUES ARE DUE!! $100 annually, now due and payable. Our own Ken Coker hit the big 4-0 last week. For this horrendous feat he was fined a paltry $10.

He was not only reminded, he had to pay $15. for the now-infamous rose and vase. Loretta Slyh really knows how to travel. She gets real deals - like checking out Maui to see if it's still intact with a little marlin fishing off the big island. Two weeks of such punishment only cost her $20.! Steve Owles travelled to Boston via Lake Tahoe. Sounds like he had a real good time, complete with wife, mother-in-law, four teenagers and a senile dog. He was let off easy with a $10. fine for having to suffer so much. Vacations, vacations, vacations. John Jones visited Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. That sounds innocent enough, but not when you get flown there in a private plane. He saw some unusual things like a coyote with a yellow spotted tie. On the Snake River he saw five fly fishermen who caught a big nothing. He put his roostertail on a hook and caught three cutthroat in one hour. He also caught a German shorthair. The trip cost him $15., the dog cost him $5. Kent Seegmiller, while not present, nonetheless spoke, asking for 100% attendance. He is willing to put in $100. per month for any month we make it. When invited into a school, the or ganization sends counselors to train elementary and high school students how to thwart a molester and say no to sexual advances. Betty told of elementary children who avoided be ing kidnapped by using techniques learned during a 20 minute WAR pre sentation. They teach the children that it. is okay to say "no" to sexual advances, how to get away from that person and where to go for help. Kids have a right to be "Safe, Strong and Free" which is the rallying cry of elemen tary children. It was good to hear someone is tak ing positive steps to prevent child abuse. FINE TIMES Ray^ Gorman placed a very expensive ad in the Sonoma Business magazine. Also, President Kent spotted a Gorman Designs vendor while visiting his favorite ghost town, Jerome, Arizona. This cost Ray $ But, did Kent buy any ear rings? Have you heard Ponseti & Partners new client is Simons & Brecht. She almost escaped a fine because she did such a good job on the bulletin masthead and new logo for our'" fund raiser known as Westoberfest. She didn't need that $5.00 anyway. The Olsen's have a new addition to their family. The 800 pound 3 year old just arrived. Isn't Morgan Mare a funny name for a baby. it cost Steve only $5.00, which should have been increased when Rhoann pointed out that there is no "tt" in Ponseti, contrary to her new Rotary Membership card. John Jones donated $3.00 for helping Lmkenheimer Hebrew grow and expand! Tom Eakin paid $12.00 for saying something which was quoted in one of our local papers. is giving his wife a lovely rose for her birthday which was graciously donated by the club. 5 RECOGNITION ( ROTARY CLUB ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT1 513 R.I. Hugh Archer ; : 1 DIRECTORS: DISTRICT GOVERNOR ; Jack Vallerga 1 : CLUB SERVICE Kent Seegmiller i -ELECT Gary Doolittle SECRETARY Steve Olsen TREASURER Tom Eakin PAST Bob Dunn COMMUNITY SERVICE VOCATIONAL SERVICE Leroy Carlenzoli INTERNATIONAL SERVICE SERGEANT-AT-ARMS! Chartered June 30, 1986 Meets every Thursday 7:15 a.m. At the Sheraton Round Barn Inn P.O. Box Santa Rosa, CA August 17, 1989 Ms. Ellen Roddick spoke to us about organizing our thoughts. She explained The Mind Map and The Harvard Outline. They are essen tially the same, but, the Harvard Outline looks prettier. Both methods start with a question to be answered. The Mind Map looks as cut tree viewed from above. The question is inserted in the trunk. She used the example "What do I do?" to show how both systems work. Each branch is identified with a key word or phrase. Avoid sentences as, at this point; they just get in the way. Additional branches are drawn to and labeled with related topics. Jim Knauff used his to describe how he plays golf and it worked. He explained it very well. Ms. Roddick has a book full of ideas or methods that make writing easier. If you see an improvement in the bulletin you will know they work. Howard (Buster) Daulton was selected for Leadership Santa Rosa. Seems Nancy couldn't wait and told President Kent about it in front of everyone. Nancy that's brave for someone who claims to be broke, but Buster wasn't and paid $15. Con-gradulations Howard. Tom Eakin of Vac-u-Dry was recognized twice; once for his bosses continual denials and again for being anything but dry. More about that later, the first offense cost him $3. Eric Van Cleave who sits on the Board of Directors of the "proposed" Windsor Oaks National Bank paid very little considering the amount of free publicity he is getting. The cost $15. Seems he paid at the Windsor Rotary also. President Kent asked Mr. Jeff Smith a member of the Windsor Club to take a message to his president, "Don't mess with us," sung to the tune, "Go ahead, make my day." Jack Eddinger paid $2. for driving his hot rod in public. It is a 1929 Yellow Ford pick up which he readily admits is all Chevy except the body. Allan Rich received the complimentary rose for his wife, after he and Kent had a long discussion as to what day her birthday was. Kent placed the fine at $15 but Allan's raised it to $20 in honor of his childs birthday, which is also this coming week. Nancy Aita created a new Oxymoran when she used the words Legimate and Dolinsek in the same sentence, during her craft talk. It cost her $5. And last, the matter I promised to talk more about, The Four Horsemen. Jim Hakel, Tom Eakin, Gary Doolittle and attended at the fair to enjoy an afternoon at the races. I cannot divulge any gory details as silence was purchased for $5. each. NEW MEMBER The following person has been proposed and approved by the board of directors for membership in our club. GUESTS Jim Knauff and Steve Davis introduced their guests David Karpilow and Frank Cercone respectively. NEW BLUE BADGES Jim Knauff, Bill Amos and Steve Davis are now Blue badges. President Kent took pleasure in presenting these gentlemen with their new badges. Congratula-tions. HOW TO PRESENT YOUR IDEAS TO A GROUP Ms. Linda Paulson not only told us how to present our ideas to a group, she demonstrated. Polls show the greatest fear we have is talking to a group. she pointed out that we fear public speaking more than death. You too can overcome fear by knowing your audience, the room, and learning to be natural. The last is most important as 7% of one's message is received as words; 38% by voice inflection and 55% by body gestures. Some body gestures are more fun to watch than others, so; we have to make ours interesting. Everyone is afraid of being in front of an audience including such amateurs as Bob Hope, Willard Scott and Gloria Steinum. They overcame their fear as we all can. The audience is usually pulling for the speaker because everyone likes to see someone else succeed. Also, they are glad someone else is speaking and not them. To learn more about public speaking, Ms. Paulson recommends the following books: "Swim With Sharks and Stay Alive" (I missed the author's name) and "You Are The Message" by Roger Ais. She claims these are the best books on public speaking, at least until hers comes out. YOU CAN HELP!!! Our club is sponsoring Ariane Dukers who is a foreign exchange student from Belgium. To relieve the burden on the host family and to be sure she has a memorable trip Dave Lorenzen is requesting volunteers to take Ariane on day trips. Ariane speaks English and enjoys Skiing, Tennis, Swimming, Movies and Shopping. She loves animals and children. She is 17, soon to be 18 years old. MONEY IS GROWING IN THE SONOMA HILLS Greg Nilsen, owner of Wine Country Cuisine told us how small, independent farmers are making a good living growing vegetables in Sonoma County. He told us how a little land, some know how, and a small investment can yield harvests of great profits. Sonoma County is famous for quality produce. After World War II local farm output de clined with the rise in che mical farming. Local farmers could not compete with those in the San Joaquin Valley who can use chemicals efficiently to increase production drama tically. The desire for quality creates markets for "home grown", hand raised, often organic, vegetables. Our climate and soils combine to intensify the flavors of fruits and vegetables. Every one knows about the fine grapes and wines of Sonoma County. Locally grown let jtuce, tomatoes and other yeg etables are recognized world wide for being the finest one can buy. Here the word finest means expensive. Wine Country Cuisine packages and sells this fine produce throughout the United States. i If you want to know more about this kind of farming contact the Farm Bureau or Greg Nilsen at ANNOUNCEMENTS The following members are PAUL HARRIS SUSTAINING MEMBERS according to Rotary International. Leroy Carlenzoli, Ken Coker, Jim Daw,, Gary Doolittle, Robert A. Dunn, Thorn Eakin, Clifford Eddinger,, Frederick F. Franke III, Pat Gallagher, John R. Jones, Archie Julian, Bill Kokke, Daniel Lambert, Russell F. Lockner,, David C. Lorenzen, Mike McCracken, Alan Rich, Kent Seegmiller, Warren Smith. J Your club is sponsoring Ariane Dukers who is a foreign exchange student from Belgium. To relieve the burden on the host family and to be sure she has a memorable trip Dave Lorenzen is requesting vol unteers to take Ariane on day trips. Ariane speaks English and enjoys Skiing, Tennis, Swimming, Movies and Shopping. She loves animals and child ren. She is 17, soon to be 18 years old.
