BOX 4687 / SANTA ROSA, CA CHARTERED JUNE 30, 1986 MEETS EVERY THURSDAY 7:15 AM AT THE SHERATON ROUND BARN INN DISTRICT GOVERNOR Robert V. Kane < SANTA ROSA A CITY DESIGNED FOR LIVING, By Archie Julian We enjoyed a slide show of the im provements made to our downtown over the last 20 years. Taken one at a time the change seems piece meal but, a look a what Downtown was just a few years ago shows a complete transformation. The changes are continuing. The Rosenburg building on the Northeast corner of Mendocino Avenue and Fourth Street is planned for hous ing on the upper floors and new re tail stores on the ground floor. Square is scheduled for a face lift and a new community market is coming to Fourth Street." The city must continue to change to remain a desirable place for it's citizens to use. Now, FINE TIMES BY C.E. it could be attributed to all the stress of tax time, but Alan Rich was a little dazed when he showed up for our Thursday morning meeting April 27th and no one was in attendance. $10.00 When we say "Queen for a Day", Who comes to mind???? Non other than Rhoann Ponseti, right?! Well for 13 AWARDS Bill Kokke got to pay $10.00 and Randy Seelye volunteered for the other $ A two week vacation to Kona and all he did was play golf!!!! That cost Phil Hulen $20.00 (How do you pro nounce his name again Pres Bob?) Well, I guess Carol Estes and old Webster will become better ac quainted, $1.00 because she didn't know what "Bankers acceptance" means. When Dana Anderson gets fined, all the females are going to start to scatter. Judy Mills had to pay $10.00 because Dana doesn't help his wife with the Yard work!!! According to Gary Doolittle the only thing in his house that is burglar proof are about a dozen earrings produced bv Gorman De-. signs!!! $1.00 fine to Ray for such a good concept. What is this club coming to!! John Jones paid $5.00 for a little R & R after a tough tax season. BOARD MEETING At the last board meeting the board approved applications for member ship of Mr. Bill Amos and Mr. George Dennis Lenhart. Approved $2,000 donation to the Sonoma County Child Guidence Cen ter. The money will be invested in the SCCGC's general fund and used where needed. Approved $1,000 for improvement of a Chilean School. Many of you may remember the talk Del Raby gave about the need in Chili. John Jones agreed to sponsor bulle tin mailing for next month. The board gave special thanks to John Jones of Linkenheimer, Hebrew and Company, for use of their con ference room and the donation of coffee and donuts.??? Mystery Rotarian??? BOX 4687 / SANTA ROSA, CA < CHARTERED JUNE 30, 1986 MEETS EVERY THURSDAY 7:15 AM AT THE SHERATON ROUND BARN INN DISTRICT GOVERNOR Robert V. Kane THE MYSTERIOUS MULE LADY IS A NO-SHOW It sounded like one of those "don't miss" programs -a chance to see the mysterious fmule lady. Expecting the mule train to dash in and surprise us at any minute, needless to say there was a great deal of disappointment. Now we have only our imaginations to count on. (Shades of the Tenacious Tannenbaum Twins?) * THE MYSTERIOUS MYSTERY ROTARIAN IS A NO-SHOW II Married to a wonderful Georgian, this person must have been with the Mule Lady... where? Not at our meeting. The mystery Rotarian is still a mystery. CLUB ASSEMBLY Sonoma Child Guidance We were forced by the lack of a speaker into a Club Assembly, wherein Ray Gorman invited us to participate in a "fixer-upper weekend" at the offices of Sonoma Child Guidance on Saturday, May 20. A sign-up sheet will be at this Thursday's meeting. Our level of involvement came up in this discussion. Ray has done a great iob choosing an organization tor us to align with. What remains is some serious soul searching to determine our direction. Ray is taking a fund-raising seminar to help Child Guidance and Sunrise Rotary to learn as much as we can about this vital issue. Some areas of involvement for our group include: joint fund-raising efforts; developing a diversified income chain over the next 10years; five-year business plan; formation of a committee to direct this effort over the long-run. A suggestion was made to make our Oktoberfest a joint fund-raiser. This will, be considered by appropriate committees. Oktoberfest Howard Daulton reported on the progress of the Oktoberfest. The date is set for Saturday, October14,1989 in the evening. Ticket prices will be lowered from $15. of last year to $10. T-shirts and visors will be for sale, imprinted with the (Gorman) logo. Howard very graciouslyinformed us of our "volunteer" committees consisting of: graphics & posters, Rhoann Ponseti silent auction, Warren Smith ticket sales, Jim Knauff accounting, Phil Hulen food, Dave Lorenzen Darbeque, Peter Treleaven food service, Russ Lockner beer & distributor, Jack Eddinger prize drawing, Loretta Slyh decorations, open - need volunteer clean-up, to whoever sells fewest tickets entertainment, Pat Gallagher Some suggestions included a music group that goes somewhat beyond whatever "oom-pa-pa" music is. Country and western was suggested. The mule lady was also to be invited - one more chance! fine Times... A guest gave us the rundown on Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He "forgot" to bring his club's flag, so, we lost but did not gain one. Does anyone know the percentageof flags we actually get from those who promise to send them? Wayne Light paid $25. for the privilege of tellingus about his new 4,000 square foot house. That's getting off pretty easily for a house that size. It's a good thing he wasn't fined for his wife's pushing of the panic button... Pat Gallagher, who as of this writing is still employed and still employed at the same location (not employed by the same employer), has a live radio show going to benefit Canine Companions for Independence. $8. admits you to a performance at the Studio Kafe. June 2 is a special benefit night for CCI... be thereor bebittenby a mad dog. Leroy Carlenzoli filled us in on a lazy Mississippi River trip, complete with history lesson. It seems that in the good ole' days the river was laden with 100's of steamboats. The railroads wanted the business and would stopat nothingto get it - they burned those classic beauties... Steve Olsen started talking a foreign language again - about his horses and that world. He was recently in the South, too, to attend the Volvo World Cup Horse Combined Driving competition. Did anybody whinny? Phil Hulen's name has become somewhat of a joke. Why? Seems our president has a hard timepronouncing thisname no one elsehas a problemwith. Is this a good or bad sign? All we know is, he's leaving office soonand we have high hopes for the next president's ability to pronounce this highly unusual, foreign name. ****«a«*n*«*^n**a^^ v\\\\\\\\\\v«\\\\w

BOX 4687 / SANTA ROSA, CA CHARTERED JUNE 30, 1986 MEETS EVERY THURSDAY 7:15 AM AT THE SHERATON ROUND BARN INN ( Jeffrey Harris, M.A., C.C.C., etc. Talks Right Good Communication is a very important word. The goal of all communication is Trust and Believability. What you radiate is what you attract. Your voice is a communication tool too many people ignore. Harris & Associates is a group of speech and organizational communication consultants who help individuals and. organizations become moresuccessful by refining their communication skills. Excellent communication skills enhance success in any endeavor. We spend fully 75% of our communication time in speaking and listening. Even listening is a critical skill, making up fully 40% of our communication time. 38% of our communication skills involve the voice and how we saythings. Surprisingly, 55% of all communicationis non-verbal'. Four things make a good voice: pitch, resonance, intensity and intonation. Howard Daulton demonstrated his incredible abilities by repeating repeatedly the phrase, "Uh, huh, my name is Howard." Harris' friendly computer analyzed his voice and found it adequate. 70% of us do not speak in the natural pitch of our voice, while 38% of our effectiveness is based on the sound of our voice. Many men (not in our club!?) have the "John Wayne" voice syndromeassociating deep tone with power and masculinity. While verbal communication is certainly important, non-verbal is 10X more powerful than what you say. Five factors contribute to non-verbal factors: distance, posture, face, eyes and hands. Mystery Rotarian is a No-Show III Married to a wonderful Georgian, this person attended our meeting, but was left out again due to time constraints. Welcome New Members!! We are pleased and proud to welcome three new members into the tribe: Howard Daulton brought in Bill Amos, owner of Coddingtown's Baskin & Robbins store. Phil Hulen sponsored the membership of his own son-in-law, Stan Walker of Stan Walker & Associates, acoustical contractors- Dan LainDert proposed and welcomed George Dennis Lenhart (Denny) of NuForest Products in Healdsburg. They manufacture wholesale forest products. Remember, membership growth is everyone's business. One of the privileges you have as a member of Rotary is the right to propose new members. More New Members Proposed Art King, CPA with accounting firm of Moss Adams, proposed by Howard. Daulton. NancyAita, insurance and employee benefits, owner of Aita & Associates, proposed by John Dolinsek. These candidates for club membership have been approved by the Classification & Membership committees and accepted by the Board of Directors and hereby are published in accordance with the Bylaws, Article II. Before taking final action on these proposed members,a ten-day period from the date of this notice shall elapse, during which time any member has the privilege of objecting to the election of any proposed member by so notifying the Board of Directors in writing and stating therein the reason for his/her objection. Sf^Hg^fefc. Keeping up with Kagoshima Dave Lormzen filled us in on Kagoshima Nishi. Chartered in 1986, the program started with a student exchange committee, enlisting the help of Friends of Kagoshima. In ,nine students were sent to Japan during the summer for a full month. The Group Study Exchange Program allows 4-5 young professionals to tour local Rotary districts with at least one Rotarian in attendance. Our club has also hosted 15 students from Japan, involving some 20of our families. We have also sent funds to a club in Chile to provide a heating stove for a rural school. In , ten students from Santa Rosa are slated to go to Japan for one month with two chaperones. On the local scene we will be hosting a Belgian student from August through June. She will be staying in four different homes.
