One of our favorite events was the Concours at Hillsborough. It was a favorite because of the friendly welcome we received when attending their event. Last Sunday the Concours in Santa Rosa was every bit as nice an event! Everyone, from the registration desk, to the volunteers who helped guide us to our Class parking, to the volunteers who offered water, were all wonderful. We were thanked throughout the day for bringing our car. You are to be congratulated for hosting a very fine event. We thank you for all your work. We were proud of our City of Santa Rosa. I am quite sure that everyone in attendance had a wonderful day. Santa Rosa Junior College was the perfect place for the event. Thank you, again. Sincerely, Rudy and Patricia Kreuzer Santa Rosa

Planning Ahead: Due to their un-tiring efforts at this years Concours d Elegance, Ken Coker and Casidy Ward were both rewarded with the titles of Chairpersons of the Concours d Elegance 2000! There is no doubt that next years event is in good hands (boy, do we plan ahead or what?). A Hat, by any other name: How President Shauna can call flowers around her neck, and another one above her ear, a hat, is anyone's guess, but she did. Unsuccessful guesses cost Bob Scott, Warren Smith and Jim Brenton a couple bucks each. Nice try guys, but I was kind of

Steele Lane Elementary gets more books: It seems that Dave Lorenzen was charged by a certain Rotary Club President to move a Concrete Fountain that a certain Rotary Club President bought. To offer a plea of help, Dave became a Boastful Book Buyer and offered to any Club member in assisting in the landscape project the same recognition. Thanks to the assistance of John Dolinsek and Phil Sitzman, the fountain is in place, and Steele Lane Elementary Library now has three more books! Contributions were as follows: John Dolinsek for Scott Dolinsek = $100 Russ Lockner for Christina Ranasinghe = $125 After these contributions, Santa Rosa Sunrise has contributed a total of $2,162, or $33.26 per capita (16.63% of Club goal, 33.60% of District goal, and 60.48% of RI goal). The $10,000 World Community Service Project contribution is in addition to these amounts. So far only 19 members have taken advantage of the matching monies available because of the WCS Project. Remember the Club will match the first $100 each member contributes to the RI Foundation. Additionally, there is still $3,093 available on a first pay, first receive basis for members who contribute more than $100.

As it turns out the hat was for the Railroad Festival Celebration, in Promontory, Utah this week (boy, your stretching now). More, and more and more books for the Steele Lane Library this week. Dave Lorenzen made good on his promise for the slave labor on his Fountain moving project with John Dolinsek and Phil Sitzman signing books to the Library. Since books were being presented, Frank Cercone wanted to donate a book in the name of Baboo Scott for the great work he did with the SRKSEP Project this year. Thanks to both Frank and Baboo. Organized by John Dolinsek, a group of Club members and spouses spent what turned out to be a very warm, but very enjoyable day hike to Point Reyes. Enjoying the event were Kathy Kent, Steve Amend, Hugh Helm, Jim Brenton and Nancy and Bob Aita. Board member Steve Amend is responsible for the planning of this series of events, and will be informing us of the next outing as soon as it is scheduled! Thank You Letter From Youth Grant Recipient ANGELA CASE FOUNDATION REPORT It seems in an attempt to offer a Hi Five of sorts, Leroy Carlenzoli realized that perhaps his trips to Canada, the Northwest and the Caribbean might just need a little more contribution, so he bumped it up to a contribution to the Foundation of Rotary International in the amount of $100 to start a PHF for his daughter Jennifer That makes our club total for the at $2,462. or $37.88 per capita. As always, the club will match Leroy's contribution $1 for $1. live band and Hay Rides. Seems like a great time and place to invite a guest. This will be a legitimate make up meeting, and, for Sunrise Rotary, will be an additional meeting that week. SRKSEP Celebrates 13 Years of Success! This year celebrated the 13th successful year of student exchanges with our sister Club in Kagoshima, Japan with the Santa Rosa / Kagoshima Student Exchange Program. The Rotary portion of this program was started by charter member Dan Lambert, and has been headed for the last five years by Bob Scott. Over the past 13 years there has been participation in the program by 73 students from Kagoshima, and 53 students from Sonoma County. The visitors from Japan usually spend 2 weeks in Santa Rosa, staying with host families from both Rotary and members of the Friends of Kagoshima Association. Additionally they will spend another 1 to 2 weeks touring California, including places like Disneyland a n d Yosemite. The group that travels from Sonoma County on the alternating years will spend only 2 weeks on Japan, traveling to Tokyo, and visiting Rotarians in both Hiroshima and Kagoshima. This years delegation of 8 students were chaperoned by the Mooney s, a husband and wife team. Next summer, there will be another contingent of travelers from Japan coming this direction, so if you are interested in enjoying a wonderful experience in hosting a student from Japan, let Bob Scott know as soon a s possible. You won t regret it!

In medieval Ireland, mushrooms were thought to be umbrellas for leprechauns; the English believed mushrooms should be gathered under a full moon to be edible; the ancient Egyptians considered mushrooms the sons of gods, sent to earth riding on bolts of thunder. Puffballs, a kind of fungi, were found in Stone Age settlements. Historical data indicates mushroom cultivation and consumption throughout the ancient Greek and Roman eras, and Asian civilizations have been cultivating mushrooms (specifically the Shiitake) for over 2000 years. However, it wasn't until the 17th-century in France that commercial mushroom growing began. The Agaricus, or White mushroom, was the first variety to be cultivated. The original mushroom "farms" were, and still are, located in quarry tunnels near Paris the reason why White mushrooms have long been called "Champignon de Paris" by French chefs.commercial mushroom farming in the U.S. began in Pennsylvania in the early 20th Cerntury. Today, cultivation has spread to more than 20 states but Pennsylvania remains the largest producer, with California a strong second. PROGRAM CHAIRPERSON FOR SEPTEMBER IS STEVE HERRON CLUB STUFF Did anyone see where that cop came from? I'm sure that was what Debra Corrigan was thinking about when our Speaker of the Day Wayne Ziese pointed out that she was not only speeding so that she would not be late for the meeting, but she also parked in a Handicapped Parking space. He said the usual fine was $271, but he settled for her paying the Club $20 instead! Thanks for the fun Debra! Traveling Rotarians! It seems that several members have been traveling the world. Merle Hayes just got back from Scandinavia, and gave us quite an oration in Swed-markian. She also tried to butter up President Shauna with a hat, hoping to reduce her fine (it didn t work). Then there was the pair of travelers to Spain, PP Randy Seelye and PDG Del Raby. After a long explanation why they never actually went to any kind of a normal Rotary Meeting, Del presented

Once again, Archie and Susan Julian have graciously offered to host a bar-bque and swim party following the canoe trip. Please contact Archie if you wish to participate in the bar-b-que only. All Interact Club members, Rotarians and families are invited to attend this fun-filled get together. Contact Jim McCracken to sign up. Living Room Golf Tournament: Steve Amend announced that The Living Room, an organization we support both through the Club, as well as through some of our businesses, is having their Annual Fundraiser Golf Tournament, Friday, October 1 at Oakmont. It s $100 per person: Contact Steve for more info. CONCOURS 99 UPDATE The preliminary numbers are in for the Concours d Elegance, and it appears that there is a NET of just o v e r $14, That means $7,000 for each Santa Rosa Sunrise and Santa Rosa Rotary. Pretty darn good for a first time event, especially when you consider that this was a shared event. Because this was such an involved event, the final numbers may take as much as another 30 days to determine. LIVESTOCK AUCTION Once again this year we participated in the livestock auction at the Sonoma County Fair. Thanks to John Dolinsek coordinating this, the Club purchased a lamb from Flora Karoki, a FFA member, and then donated the meat to The Salvation Army. A Thank You from Flora is to the right. Pres. Shauna with a flag from Portugal to add to her headgear. PP Randy also made sure that the Prez. added another hat to her collection with a barrette from his travels in Spain. Another traveler was Tux Tuxhorn, who on his last hunting trip went in search of a nice big buck, but instead he bagged a nice big pig! Because of all the confusion, he offered up a few green backs! Great News! PP Russ Lockner took the opportunity for a Hi Five to let everyone know that Susan is walking. Gee Russ, all it took was a new one story house! Project Amigo Update: Board Member Steve Davis informed us that our money for Project Amigo has been sent to the Foundation, and we are still trying to solicit additional funds from local Contractors to participate. He says the Club has also been asked by DG Mike Merrill to assist the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa in getting involved in this project as well. OH YEA! The hat this week was for National Little League Week, and, by the way, you have to pay even when you guess right!
