the Grapevine P.O. Box 493 Napa, CA Exclusively for Rotarians and their families Rotary Club of North Napa August 17, Officers Tom Webber,Pres Bill Bennett,VP Tony Giaccio, Sec Carl Mianecke,Treas George Shanks,IPP Board Members: Chris Burns John Duser Tracy Tinsley Steve Simich Editor-Edgar Calvelo Meets on Tuesday at 6:30PM at Culinary Arts Center, Wine Train, 801 Eight Street Napa, CA District 5130 District Governor Jim Flamson (Kathy) Rotary Club of Calistoga 1818 Cedar St. Calistoga, CA Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith (Judie) Rotary Club of Kirksville, MO UPCOMING PROGRAMS: August 24 - DG Jim Flamson Invite your spouse and guests August 31 - Grace Goldman Wills & Trusts September 7 - Superior Judge Mark Boeenecker September 14 - Mike Pechner September 21 - Kate Rubin Volunteer Center September 28 - Liz Alessio Operation: With LOVE from HOME Foundation sets up fund to help flood victims in Pakistan Rotary International News August 2010 In response to the floods that have devastated Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province since 23 July, The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees is accepting contributions to help fund Rotary projects that will support long-term disaster recovery in the affected areas. Rotarians, clubs, and districts can contribute both cash and District Designated Fund (DDF) allocations to the Rotary Pakistan Flooding Fund. This account is being administered through the Foundation s Matching Grants program. In their application, Matching Grant project partners can pledge DDF and cash contributions and request that they be matched by the Pakistan fund during the and Rotary years. Applications received by the Foundation for recovery projects in Pakistan will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis and will be approved by the Pakistan fund. All the current Matching Grant guidelines and criteria will apply to these projects, including restrictions regarding construction and renovation. For more information, read the Rotary Pakistan Flooding Recovery Information Guide.

CLUB MEETING AUGUST 17, 2010 CELEBRATIONS Bruce Lederer, Tony Giaccio, and Larry Renner all celebrated their anniversaries. Somehow Larry wound up with half a steer during his celebration his wife Carol won t let him keep it on ice in the bathtub, so he is seeking steak lovers YOUR DOLLARS ARE SMILING Erna Stevenson is pleased to have a new building on Camino Dorado named in her honor. Steve Simich noted his daughter s first day of high school. President Tom looked forward to his 50 th class reunion. Bill Bennett fined himself for a mysterious, but probably minor infraction. Carl Mianecke enjoyed a holiday in Dunsmuir until the train thundered through. Tracy Tinsley appreciated having a few bucks left over from back to school shopping. Erna insisted that George Shanks be fined for an alleged transgression in the parking lot. George seemed stoic about the whole thing. OTHER CLUB NEWS President Tom and John Duser attended a Rotary Foundation meeting in Rohnert Park. Clubs and individuals both get points for their donations. Our North Napa Rotary Club has historically ranked very high in the District in donations per capita (typically $ per individual). This year the club ranked 4 th in the District. Bill Bennett is seen here receiving his 4-sapphire pin from Ted Witten.

George Shanks presented the club with the proceeds from the Chef s Market wine sales this year: $ Somewhat less than hoped for, but a fine effort, nonetheless. The pig brought in an additional $400-$500 in proceeds. That makes the pig our second best Chef s Market representative, after Teal, of course. At next week s meeting, we will host District Governor Jim Flamson. The Board will meet with him at 4pm. The club social will begin after the Board meeting plan on 5:30 or slightly before. Champagne and appetizers are promised. Spouses and guests are highly welcome. Business attire is strongly recommended. Ties are optional. The normal meeting follows at 6:30. Carl Mianecke laid out his working concept for the Friends of North Napa Rotary Club : that we have a closely affiliated (non-member) group of supporters for our club. Friends would be more than guests, but less than regular members. The concept is still evolving, but Friends might include friends and family of club members, potential new members, and even exiting members. They would not be part of the formal Rotary processes. They might have their own fundraising processes. Perhaps there would be a regular club member who would serve as a liaison to the Friends. Tracy said she would be willing to serve in such a capacity. Erna noted that spouses already can be handled as honorary members if they have a history of significant contributions to the club. The niche for Friends is currently a little fuzzy. More conceptual work needs to be done. Stay tuned. As President Tom has declared, we have a goal of adding 5 net new members during his term. George Shanks, Tracy, and Kathi Metro are attending a membership seminar this Saturday and hope to bring back some fresh ideas on increasing membership. Mark your calendars: on Sunday, October 24 there will be a special multi-district event in San Francisco. RI President Ray Klinginsmith will lead members from Districts 5130, 5150, 5160, and 5170 on an End Polio Now adventure. There will be

a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, shopping and dining activities, and a special ceremony of the lighting of the End Polio Now sign at the Ferry Building. All club members are encouraged to participate. Troop 51 scouts and parents are holding a bike stop clean up this Saturday from 8:30 12:00. You can contact John Kempkey for more information. There will be no highway cleanup this weekend due to low availability of workers. Ted Witten talked about the history of this club activity (we have done it every year since 1990!) and encouraged members to participate. The next target date is Saturday, September 11. Please try to help. John Kempkey earned his blue badge! Here President Tom is shown proffering the prize.

Recycling Guest Speaker Tim Mattei Tim Mattei, Public Education Manager for Napa Recycling & Waste Services (NRWS), talked about their recycling efforts in the City of Napa and southern Napa County. Currently, over 60% of trash is recycled in the area, making Napa a very green place indeed. Tim expects a state mandate to go to 70% within 10 years and thinks it will be no problem. There are economic benefits to go along with the ecological ones, including savings in raw materials and job creation (10-25 times more jobs are created through recycling vs. landfill operations). Twenty-five different materials are separated from the single recycling stream. In fact, 92% of what goes into recycling cans is actually recyclable. Food-soiled paper, styrofoam, and plastic bags make up most of the unusable stuff in those cans. Plastic bags can be recycled at grocery stores and wind up in Trex. These bags may eventually be banned by the state. NRWS is now composting yard waste and the product is certified for use on organic crops. The waste is heated to 150 F for 2 weeks and then screened to prepare it. You can now recycle electronics on any day at NRWS with a free drop off. Supposedly, you can drop off any appliance for free if you have purchased an energy efficient replacement however, Carl says he was snubbed during a recent such attempt. Tim will talk with the staff. There is a cooking oil drop off now for biodiesel manufacture. A food recycling program has been initiated. 20% of non-recycle trash is now food waste. NRWS plans to have you put it in the yard waste container once they get the permits. I wonder if those will get stinky? NRWS is working on wine bottle reuse. The hard part is getting the labels off. They are getting a lot of pre-consumer wine bottles from bottling operations and tasting rooms. George Shanks said every winery has bottle waste because it takes several cases to set up a bottling line and bottles are only delivered on large pallets. To learn more, go to
