1 WCSC GRAPEVINE September Newsletter 2013 Hello New and Returning WCSC Members, Get excited! The WCSC year is starting, and there are wonderful luncheons scheduled and a wide variety of activities planned. The website has a listing of many activities in store for you this fall. Come on out and join us for some fun. You should find plenty of opportunities to make friends, make memories, and make a difference. Get excited because we are working on plans for a WCSC extravaganza to take place this winter. More details to follow! It is disappointing to have to tell you that the MWR Bazaar has been canceled for this fall. Due to all the growth USAG Wiesbaden has experienced this year, there is no current space available that could accommodate an event as large as a bazaar. It is a huge disappointment to our hardworking bazaar committee, to our membership, and to our Wiesbaden community. I want to thank everyone who worked on this effort and for all those who had signed up to volunteer. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Loss of the bazaar revenue places more emphases on the WCSC Thrift Shop to make money. This program is the primary means WCSC has to generate revenue to support our club, welfare and scholarship programs. The enormous efforts of our hardworking staff and volunteers make it possible for us to support our community s needs. Please join me in thanking Lilly Parkos for her tireless dedication to the store. She has decided to step down from the manager position. For all you have given the thrift shop, we thank you Lilly. I hope to see you at our first luncheon. We will be playing BINGO for beautiful Polish Pottery prizes. The fun starts Wednesday, September 18 th, 10:00 to 1:00, ACS Cafeteria, next to the Pizza Hut on Hainerberg Kaserne. Warm regards, Claudia Helmlinger, WCSC President Visit us online at: 1
2 Tuesday, Sept Vineyard Wagon Ride, Wine Tasting Join us for a 2 ½ hour wagon ride through the vineyards in Nierstein. As we ride along we will have the opportunity to sample many different wines and have a light lunch of brotchen and wurst. After the ride we will have an opportunity to purchase house wines. Cost is Euro each, maximum 24 participants. This group will not be able to return before school is out. Tuesday, Sept Lunch Bunch This month we will meet at the Palmyra Restaurant, Taunussstr 15 at noon for some Syrian and Lebanese cuisine. For those who want to carpool, we will meet outside the Entertainment Center at 11:30. Wednesday, Sept 25 Rüdesheim Walking Tour Our favorite tour guide and fellow WCSC member, Judy Schönmayr, will lead us on this beautiful path above the town of Rüdesheim, through the vineyards, with amazing views of the Rhine River. We walk down the path into Assmanshausen, take the chairlift back up, perhaps have a glass of wine along the way, and will finish our tour by having lunch at the restaurant at the Niederwaldenkmal. Meet at Hainerberg Shoppette at 8:45 to carpool. This trip will return by the end of the school day. Free! Friday, Sept 27 Book Club Meet at the WCSC apartment in Hainerberg Housing at 11:00 to discuss the novel, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. (39 Texasstrasse, apt 1). Please feel free to attend even if you haven t read or finished the book yet. Sunday, Sept 29 Race for the Cure This is a fun event in support of a great cause! This charity run is organized to raise funds for research, support, and awareness of breast cancer. The WCSC is organizing a team (10 or more people) to take part in this year s event in our local area which takes place on September 29, There will be a 2 km Walk and 5 km Run. Tuesday, Oct 1 Apple Picking We will visit Happel Appel in Mainz to pick apples and pears fresh off the tree. There is also a small store with fresh pressed juice, vegetables and more. Bring a basket or bag to carry your fruit home. Price is set by weight. Meet at the Hainerberg Shoppette at 10:00 to carpool. This trip will return before the end of the school day. To sign up for any of the above activities, contact wcsc_activities@yahoo.com at least one week in advance of the meeting date. Things to do in our Community: WCSC Activities Wednesday, Sept 25 Auto Skills Class for Spouses An auto skills class will take place at the Auto Skills Shop at Rennbahnstr 12, Erbenheim on Wednesday, Sept 25 th at 9:00 a.m. The cost is $5 which will include the class, coffee/tea, pastries, juices and a great time of learning about auto maintenance such as checking fluids, jump starting a vehicle and winter tips and checks, proper tire pressure and an oil change.
