2 PIONEERING WEEKEND PROGRAM GUIDELINES THEME: The theme for this Camporee will be pioneering. Scouts will be testing their skills in knot tying, lashings, and teamwork. Be sure to learn and practice your Scout skills! Date: Friday to Sunday, September 30 - October 2, 2016 Cost: $8.00 per Scout and Adult. It is a Council requirement that you register online for all events. Check-In: Check-in is on Friday, 9/30 from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM. All units must park in the sports field/chapel parking lot. The following items will be required during the check-in process: One completed Patrol Registration Form for each patrol in the troop. Payment for any fees unpaid due to changes in numbers of Scouts attending. ALL Troop Patrols will compete in the Camporee events. Adults: This Camporee is an activity based upon the Patrol method and there is therefore no reason for adults to accompany Patrols during the events. If adults other than event staff are seen assisting the Patrols, points will be deducted from that Patrol. ALL adults are encouraged to help make this event a success by volunteering to staff a station of their choice. Please offer your assistance in advance; first come, first served. Bonus Points will be awarded to each patrol that sponsors a leader or other adult volunteer at the camporee. Same adult cannot be counted by multiple patrols. To qualify for points the adult must help the event organizers with planning by indicating their willingness to volunteer in advance of the event. A scorecard will be handed to each patrol leader. This is a record of your points during the Camporee, it will be specially marked at each station for record of having participated, and it is you responsibility to keep this with you at all times. Scorecards will be turned in to headquarters (see schedule). Food: Each Troop, Patrol & Scout are responsible for providing and preparing their own food for this event. No Food will be provided for by the Camporee or its Staff. Patrols should plan a cold/bagged lunch for Saturday as the event schedule will be adhered to strictly. Weebo Clause: A patrol with each of its members bringing a non-perishable food item for donation to local food pantry will earn bonus points. First Aid: Each unit should have their own first aid kit, and be prepared to treat minor injuries. There will be qualified medical personnel at the Camporee to treat any medical emergencies. Proper Clothing: This is a Rain or Shine event. Therefore, plan and prepare for wet weather! 2

3 Campsite Inspection for Competition: A campsite inspection will be performed Saturday afternoon/evening judging each patrol s pioneering projects. Saturday night Campfire: All Troops are encouraged to perform a skit and a song for the Saturday night campfire. All skits or songs need to be approved prior to the campfire. More information regarding signups for the campfire will be passed on at the SPL meeting on Friday night. Sunday: Before leaving the campsite Sunday morning every unit must completely police their area. All trash must be picked up and packed out nothing should be left behind. Additional instructions will be given Saturday evening. Troops must checkout with the camporee staff before leaving their campsites. Troops should strive to leave their Campsite better than they found it. Camporee patches will be handed out at the gate as Troops exit. 3

5 REQUIRED SUPPLIES Each patrol is required to bring the following supplies: Six 8 staves, 2 inches in diameter Four - guide ropes, ¼ or 3/8 dia., at least 15 long each Nine - lashing ropes, ¼ or 3/8 dia., long each Three Stakes (for or log and stake anchoring) Mallet/Stake Hammer Small Pulley or eye bolt Patrol Flag Work Gloves for each scout The supplies will be required at each station. After completion of the Travois race, you may use them to build gadgets in your campsite. Scouts need to wear some form of work gloves when working with ropes, spars, and timbers to prevent rope burns, wood splinters and rope fiber splinters. Points will be deducted at each station for scouts not wearing gloves. As there can be some discrepancies on how certain knots are tied; the current edition of the BSA Pioneering Merit Badge pamphlet will be used as a guide for station judging. 5

6 PIONEERING CAMPOREE STATIONS Patrols will be scored during the pioneering events. The events will consist of 8 stations and a final travois race. Each event will test scouts abilities in knots and lashings in timed events. Scoring will be based on time to complete, as well as quality of knots and lashings. Patrols will spend thirty minutes at each station. (550 total points) 1. Flagpole raising (70 points): as a team construct and raise a self-supporting flagpole and fly your patrol flag. a. Lashings/Knots used: Round lashing, clove hitch, taut-line hitch, two half-hitches. b. Allowed supplies: 3 poles, 4 lashing ropes, 2-3 lashing ropes to hoist flag, 3 guide ropes, 1 small pulley or eyebolt, patrol flag, 3 stakes, hammer. c. Completed pole must be at least 20 feet in height. 2. Nitroglycerine transporter (70 points): construct a transporter to safely transport nitro. a. Lashings/Knots used: Tripod lashing, square lashing, clove hitch b. Allowed supplies: 6 poles, 7 lashing ropes c. Supplied by Camporee: Nitroglycerine 3. Save the log (70 points): tie a series of knots between two stakes to lift a log off the ground. a. Lashings/Knots that may be used: clove hitch, bowline, two half-hitches, square knot, sheet bend, timber hitch, slipknot, fisherman s knot, taut-line hitch, and sheepshank. b. Allowed supplies: 8 lashing ropes; each no longer than 15 feet c. Supplied by Camporee: Stakes, log d. Each scout must tie at least one of the knots at the station 4. A-Frame walk (70 points): construct an A-Frame and walk it over a set course. a. Lashings/Knots used: Square lashing, clove hitch, two half-hitches b. Allowed supplies: 3 poles, 3 lashing ropes, 4 guide ropes 5. Tripod swing: (60 points): construct a Tripod strong enough to hold the weight of the judge! a. Lashings/Knots used: Tripod lashing, clove hitch, bowline b. Allowed equipment: 3 poles, 3 lashing ropes 6. Knot challenge (70 points): in relay fashion, tie a series of knots as fast as you can. a. Lashings/Knots used: Clove hitch, sheet bend, square knot, bowline, two half-hitches, timber hitch, taut-line hitch, figure eight b. Allowed supplies: 6 lashing ropes 7. Ladder lashing (80 points): construct a ladder to climb and ring a bell. a. Lashings/Knots used: Clove hitch, two half-hitches, ladder hitch b. Allowed supplies: 2 poles, 3 lashing ropes 8. Rope making (60 points): describe the characteristics of at least 5 different types of rope and make some rope. 6

7 TRAVOIS RACE (100 points, 75 points, 50 points, 25 points, 10 points [1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th place] Equipment needed: 5 pieces of lashing rope about feet long; 4 staves Patrols will lash the travois together using the poles and lashing rope. When completed one Scout will be chosen to ride on the travois while 4 other patrol members drag the travois around the course. The same 4 Scouts must pull for the entire course, no substitutes. There are no prescribed lashings, but the design should look somewhat like an A-frame with an extra crosspiece. If the travois comes apart during the race it must be lashed over where it came apart before proceeding to the end of the course. The course will consist of a number of stations where scouts must quickly put to use scout skills. Scoring: Ranked by time (100, 75, 50, 25, 10 points) for patrols finishing the course. There is a penalty of 10 seconds for every time the rider touches the ground (except when re-lashing). 7

8 PIONEERING CAMPSITE (250 total points) For the Pioneering Campsite, your troop will attempt to construct the projects listed below. You may not be able to construct them all, so be sure to use your time and abilities wisely. You may plan your projects prior to the weekend; including securing wood, but ALL projects must be constructed at the Pioneering Camporee. You may begin your projects upon arrival Friday evening, but not before! To reduce expenses, bailing twine may be substituted for rope for these projects. Full points are awarded for perfect lashings. These will be judged Saturday evening. Gateway: 75 points, 10-point bonus for a moving door, 5-point bonus for a doorbell Picnic Table: 75 points, must support at least two scouts Lantern Tripod: 10 points, must include lantern Dish Washing Station: 50 points, must include at least two bins Drying Rack: 10 points, clothesline does not count Troop s Choice - Create a useful camp gadget that uses at least four lashings: 15 points 8
