3 THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1987 **************************** * TODAY'S PROGRAM * * * * Community Banking Past, Present, Future * * * * Jim Alexander * **************************** UPCOMING November 12 November 19 November 21 November 26 December 3 December 12 Falconry, Rob Bell "101 Corridor", Maureen Middlebrook Foundation Dinner, Burlingame DARK TBA Christmas Party at Dave & Shauna's Also... November 9 - Board Meeting, 5:30 p.m. Dean-Witter November 19 - President's/Secretary Meeting, Santa Rosa East SANTA ROSA SUNRISE COMMUNITY SERVICE In response to a consensus of membership support for identifying our club with a community service in the area of family violence and child protection, Russ and Warren have followed up our presentation from the "Women Against Rape" with visits to Sergeant Jim Carlson of. the Santa Rosa Police Department and Dr. Bob Cassidy of the Sonoma Child Guidance Institute. The agencies that help children recover from sexual abuse and other violence are under-funded.- Support of these agencies is a community service project that CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE! As a start, the Board of Directors have approved a contribution of $300 to the "Women Against Rape" in support of the Child Assault Prevention Program. P.P.P.P.P.P. 234*. That pound that went down went back up again. MYSTERY HOTARIAH This Rotarian was born of all places in Santa Rosa! He studied in the Air Force, but not the academy. While serving in Vietnam he save the United States from communism. If you don't believe this, just stop and think about the last time you bumped into a communist at the mall, a bar or anywhere in Santa Rosa. Sorry to report there is nothing unusual (or mysterious) about this Mystery Rotarian except he's a true blue bronco buster who firmly believes Kent Seegmiller served in the Third Riech in an unmentionable capacity! * P.P.P.P.P.P. stands for President Peter's Pounds for Polio Plus Program.

4 Vol. 2 HO. 19 IN OUR LAST EPISODE... BLUE BADGE HECOGNTTIOB Tom Akin and Eric Van Cleave will be sporting blue badges from now on. Congratulations from everyone! FOUNDATION DINNER If you haven't purchased your Foundation Dinner Raffle ticket(s) you're missing the boat (or in the case of the trip to Hawaii, the plane). If you thought winning our weekly raffle was exciting, imagine winning valuable prizes like: cases of fine wine, weekend getaways, a breathtaking hot air balloon ride (courtesy of Wim's company) not to mention the grand prize a Hawaiin dream vacation! (Bells, Whistles, Applause) But, there's more. You can put the purchase of your raffle tickets towards your polio plus pledge (which in turn goes toward your Paul Harris). So, if your P.P. pledge was $100.00, buy 10 raffle tickets and you've fulfilled your pledge! Bruce still has a number of tickets, at $10 a piece. Oh yes, you need not be present to win. KSHO NORTHBAY. HEWSTALK Our club is very grateful to Frank McLaurin for taking time away from his very hectic schedule to speak about the growing Sonoma County broadcast industry. Mr. McLaurin was delighted to delve back into KSRO's history which has been a part of his history for thirty-five years! He has certainly seen the changes within those years, particularly the most recent years which have brought several new radio stations into Sonoma County. With the recent format change at his station, Mr. McLaurin proudly hailed: "The future of KSRO Newstalk is exciting! It is a listener participant format." AMD THERE'S NEXT YEAR Dana Anderson, John Jones, Del Raby and Warren Smith (all past-presidents) ' make up your nominating committee for next year's officers and directors. Sonoma International Dan Lambert and Tom Eakin attended the Association of Sonoma County Rotary Clubs dinner at Sonoma National (that's a golf club, not a bank, Dana). The topic was international talk to Tom if you're interested in having a foreign student to (not for) dinner at Thanksgiving. Get ready for the Valentine's Day Party. THE FINE TTHKS $5 Warren' s "contribution towards Unocal's new sign. $5 Bob paid the price for poor planning on some important calendar events coming up this month. $14 That nice article about Jack in the Press Democrat picked up a fine for advertising. His vacation netted yet another fine. However, Dr. Franke played the role of Jack Eddinger and wound up also playing Jack's bleeding heart. $10 Tom had a great Mexican vacation and even brought Mrs. Tom Akin. $10 Pat's radio station's commemorative 50th anniversary key chains were appreciated by his fellow members, but advertising is still a fine. IN A MATTER OF A MONTH... November is Rotary Foundation Honth, also known as "Aviation History Month", Home Education Awareness Month" as well as "One Nation Under God Month". (Wonder which month is "With Liberty And Justice For All Month"?)

10 1 - IN OUR LA.., EPISODE: In keeping our promise to increase club membership by 3% Dan Apodaca brought in Jeff Abrahamsen, the newest member on the Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary Club Roster. Jeff is from Eureka originally and now lives in Santa Rosa with his wife, Debbie, and two young children, and is the co-owner of George Peterson & Associates. If David Letterman ever runs a look-alike contest on his show, Jeff would make a likely entry don't you think? Welcome to the Sunrise Jeff! You'll have a fine time. MYSTERY ROTARIAN REMAINS A MYSTERY: Even with the reference to "Bronco Buster" no one was able to correctly guess the identity of last weeks's Mystery Rotarian. If you're still guessing at it you were either absent or absent-minded, because it was none other than Jim Daw. Incidently, Jim's craft talk was a masterful performance. One footnote missing from our original description of Jim was how he became employed at Sonoma Title. As Jim put it-he was "born into the job, because my grandfather started the business". SONOMA INTERNATIONAL: Invite a foreign student into your home and you'll find it's a learning experience for both of you! Those in terested in this program should contact Mrs. Fisher at SSU: , or talk to either Dan Lambert or Tom Eakin. JIM ALEXANDER-"COMMUNITY BANKING": Last week's guest speaker got the topic off to a great start by proposing a fine be levied against his fellow employee, Dana. In a highly informative and entertaining manner, Jim Alexander shed some new light on community banking. While most of the nation's major money lender's are falling by the wayside, community banks such as Sonoma National are, in Alexander's words: "thriving". To date, there are no less than 491 community banks in California. SNB prides itself in maintaining a "one to one relation ship with each customer, and provides such unique services as their "sit down teller", which alleviates the usual long waiting lines at banks. Alexander admits that their target in this market is narrow, but by targeting the commercial accounts, they can provide

11 maximum service to their clients. Yes, it's true Jim was formerly a drummer with Sly & The Family Stone( ). FOUNDATION DINNER RAFFLE TICKETS: Time is not on your side for long so buy your chance to some fabulous prizes soon. These and other awards will be drawn at the Rotary Foundation Benefit, November 21st in Burlingame. 3 nights for 2 at the beautiful Sunburst Resort Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. A panoramic hot air balloon ride (courtesey of Wim) or the grand prize: an all expense paid 7 days for 2 in Waikiki (includes tote bag). Remember, you can fulfill your polio plus and Paul Harris obligations by purchasing Foundation Dinner Raffle tickets. They're $10 each. All those who purchased tickets from Bruce, be sure to fill in the stubs and turn them in November 12th. THE FINE TIMES: $10 - Kent addressed Pres. Peter in an "untraditional manner". We received an intriguing twist to last week's mention of Kent's "unmentionable capacity" in the third riech from an unidentified source. Apparently Kent's "unmentionable capa city" was as high commander with the elite "RACK" (rid all commie killers). $5 - Pat's wife's birthday was moved up four days from Nov. 16th to Nov. 6th! Fortunately he knew Sue's correct birthdate which was un fortunate because he still got fined. (For Bob's record it's November 10th). $10 - Dr. Bruce's "appearance" on KSRO's talknet cost him $5 for advertising plus an additional $5 for correcting Warren (a man who is seldom correct). MYSTERY ROTARIAN: This is a real mystery, only the shadow knows, 2 -

18 IN OUR LAS.PISODE. BLUE AND HAPPY Last week Jim and Pat traded in their red badges for a blue badge, after they both fulfilled all their new membership requirements! TICKETS PLEASE! If you have purchased Rotary Foundation Benefit Dinner tickets, be sure that Bruce gets those stubs from you before the day of the Foundation Dinner, November 21st. THE MYSTERY ROTARIAN IS He was born in the "silver state" in the little town of Wells. More than likely you have passed through his town,if you've traveled along He had a somewhat undistingished education except for a "shotgun marriage" during his senior year in highschool (probably had good grades in biology!). Even with seven generations of West Point on one side and three on the other, he somehow managed to miss having to serve his country. The closest he came to the service was as a cadet in the civil air patrol. Our mystery rotarian may be known for a lot of things, but above all he's always good for a dirty job. Have you shaken hands with the mystery Rotarian? MEDIA RELATIONS WORKSHOP On November 12th the media went public! Actually the Sonoma County Foundation and the Press Democrat sponsored a media relations workshop to "Get the Word Out" to various volunteer organizations and community groups on ways to send press releases to print, radio and television. The three hour seminar was hosted by Viginia Hubbell, Executive Director of Sonoma County Foundation and featured such noted guest speakers as: Michael Parman; Editor of the Press Demo crat, Susan Leathers; PD Feature Editor, KZST News Director Rob Singleton, as well as KSRO News/Operations Director John Burgess and TV 50's Jim Johnson. Among the three hundred who attended this informative seminar was our club's public relations committee members Bob Dunn and Pat Gallagher. They had to have been there, how else would they have gathered such' a wealth of information? That's P.R. (and it ain't Puerto Rico). FALCONRY Last week's guest speaker took us all to new heights with regard to Falconry. Rob Bell, a well-known Falconer(well at least Dolinsek and Daw know him) provided the club with insight into the sport of falconry, which evolved in early Egypt, but did'nt become popular in the U.S. until the 1950's. -1-

19 The Dept. of Interior regulates falconry, and those wishing to become trainers must first take a 100 question test, that includes identification of birds and first aid treatment. You obtain a permit from the fish and game dept., who then makes periodic inspections of the area the falcon is to be kept. There is a month long process whereby the trainer teaches the bird "tracking" (that is keeping track of the bird in flight), which nowadays is done with an electronic transmitter/receiver. Bell said these electronic trackers can pick up transmission within a radius of seven miles. Even as a bird of prey, the falcon falls prey to other birds, especially the eagle. When a falcon is attached and killed, the loss suffered by its trainer is "minimal financially"...but greater in terms and effort put into training the bird. Falconers like Rob Bell are members of the North American Falcon Association (NAFA). THE FINE TIMES $20 - From Dana (and rightly so) for Nov. 5th's topic "Community Banking" turned out to be a major league plug for Sonoma National Bank. That's advertising with a capital A Dana. $2 - Somehow (and we don't know how) Bob didn't give Steve the word about those important dates Rotary has in November (of course there aren't any yet) Steve knew it but still got fined. $5 - Joe couldn't reveal the identity of last week's mystery Rotarian (Joe must not be "The Shadow"). $2 - Dr. Franke didn't know! $1 - "The Shadow" and Pat knew! P.P.P.P : When you maintain you have nothing to gain.

24 "101 CORRIDOR" Our guest speaker was Maureen Middlebrook, EVP Building Industry Association. Maureen was introduced by Kent Seegmiller in absence of Dana Andrews who used to be Dana Anderson until DuFranke did a root canal reconstruction on his name earlier in the meeting. Maureen is one of the most knowledgable people in Sonoma County concerning our building and development needs and her concern is why she sits on the 101 Corridor Committees. She siad the problem with 101 to San Francisco is more than just the commute. You also have to consider the pollution generated by idling automobiles, goods and services are at a stand still and emergency vehicles are also stranded. By the year 2005 if nothing is done, it will take 6 hours one-way to commute to San Francisco. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM is that everyone complains about the problem but they are not willing to either get involved or pay the price. Many thanks to Maureen for her time and insight. ********************************************************* A "NICE GOING" to Sunrise Rotary. We passed the 1400 mark for Rotary Foundation and we were given a banner to be attached to our club banner. *********************************************************

25 THE MYSTERY ROTARIAN The Mystery Rotarian was not identified by anyone. It was in fact Keith Gregory who bad mouthed Pat Gallagher of all people. Keith was born and raised in Wells, Nevada. At 19 he went to Los Banos to work on a ranch. He didn't like the garden spot of planet earth and went back to Nevada. In 1967 he visited Santa Rosa and has been here ever since. Keith lives in Sebastopol with his wife and three children. He is a Geo-Technical Soils Engineer who started and sold his own company. Since 1982 he has worked at Don Herzog and Associates. PROPOSED BY-LAWS Please read the proposed By-Laws you received at the Thursday meeting. If you have any comments prior to the "VOTE" on December 3rd, please contact Warren Smith, Del Raby, John Jones or Dana Anderson. The BY-LAWS affect all of us BE INFORMED. LETTERS RECEIVED 1. Thank you from Women Against Rape for our donation 2. Nice letter from Aldo with a lot of nice things about our club. *********************************************************** HOPE EVERYONE HAS AN ENJOYABLE AND PLENTIFUL THANKSGIVING
