With Spring on the way, this season is one of my favorites. While the days can seem dark, there is so much to look forward to. For example, by the time we meet for our catered dinner at the Galley in a few weeks, we will already have gained more than 90 minutes of daylight since January 1 st. Since that day you should know that your board has been busy making plans for celebrating our annual sunfest that officially begins with our Opening Day festivities on Saturday, May 4 th when we will have almost fifteen hours of daylight! Making plans for exploring the surrounding water with our waterborne friends is an important and exciting part of what we do and it all begins in January. I hope you have taken the time to weigh in on the online Survey Monkey John Zaborsky ed out last week. Your responses will play an important role in determining our North (or South) boating destinations this summer. Our January potluck at The Islander was very well attended with 51 members and guests. The food was fabulous and the speaker compelling. Taylor Shedd of the Friday Harbor Whale Museum spoke to us about the plight of the Southern Resident Orcas. Arlene Sund and Rob McNeil, our Vice Commodore, did a great job hosting. This month, with The Islander closed, we will meet at The Galley on Wednesday, February 20 th, for another delightful catered dinner. If the dark days of winter begin to wear on you, you can always think of summer days cruising and call on a quote by M. Wylie Blanchet, author of A Curve in Time, Enjoyment is always greatest when you have enough contrast to measure it by. Commodore, Mike North

If you are not founding/charter LIYC members (who are exempt from paying dues for their lifetimes) or if you joined LIYC prior to October 1, 2018, your annual membership dues are due now. Those who join in the last quarter of a calendar year have the dues amount they submitted with their membership application and initiation fee applied to the following year. For everyone else, please complete the Membership Renewal Form which you can print from the LIYC web site or from Lane Langford s dues reminder dated 1/19/19. You can also order new burgees, updated rosters/handbook inserts, name tags, etc. on this form. AND SPEAKING OF CHARTER MEMBERS Those of you who missed the January General Membership Meeting did not see this little sign that appeared on the buffet table next to big platters of Islander appetizers. Robert is one of our longest serving LIYC members a charter member from 1978 (40 years ago). Robert now lives in Bellingham, but thought it would be fun to surprise us. He said he d be down to attend a meeting when the weather gets a little nicer. THANK YOU, ROBERT!!! New member activity: Rick and Vicki Lotz and Richard Lotz and Erica Karnes have completed requirements for LIYC membership. Please introduce yourselves and welcome them at our next LIYC event.

5 TWO NEW (OR UPDATED) PRODUCTS TO BUY NOW! For most of us, the start of cruising season is a couple of months off. Now s the time to start gearing up with these two just released products. The new edition of the Waggoner Cruising Guide, 25th anniversary edition, packs twice the usual amount of information into this 5 pound tome, published right here in our own backyard (Anacortes). The new edition is spiral bound so it lays flat when open and includes information on the new ROAM App for reporting your arrival into U.S. waters, Go-NoGo weather checklists and other Smartphone Apps. After our interesting and informative presentation on the dwindling resident Orca population by Taylor Shedd, of the Whale Museum, at our January General Membership Meeting, it s clear we need to do more to clean up and protect our cruising waters. This new Clean Way Fuel Fill is a good way to start. NEW REPORTING OPTION FOR RETURNING TO THE U.S. Boaters foming back to the U.S. from Canadian waters have a new option for reporting their arrival. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol introduced a new app called CBP Reporting Offsite Arrival-Mobile (ROAM). Per CBP, The CBP ROAM app is a free mobile application that provides an option for pleasure boaters to report their U.S. entry via their personal smart device or a tablet located at local businesses to satisfy the mandated reporting requirements. In limited areas, travelers arriving in remote locations may also be eligible to use the CBP ROAM app. Contact your local Port of Entry to confirm arrival notifications via the CBP ROAM app are accepted. There is a lot more to know about the app and how it can be used, so visit CBP.gov, the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
