3 Woden Rotary Club President s Report for year 2016/17 from Jeff Ibbotson Tonight, as one Rotary year comes to an end and prior to another begins, it is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the Woden Rotary Club. Thank You All Before I begin this reflection, I would like to particularly thank everyone for their commitment during the 2016/17 Rotary year. I m speaking not only our active club members but also partners of members and families who are all so willing in their support of the Woden Club in whatever activity we engage. Thank you! Weekly meetings of the Woden Rotary Club were generally held at the Irish Club at Weston Creek and occasionally at alternative venues such as the Hellenic Club and in private homes. Thank you to members who opened their homes on special occasions. Meetings saw many guest speaker and club members addressing the club with varying topics including: Menslink, Wattle Day, Introduction to the Beef Industry and more recently Renewables and Energy Efficiency. Together with the Sergeant session our meeting were entertaining and informative. The 2016/17 Challenge We began the year with the challenge from the President of Rotary International - John F Germ Rotary Serving Humanity, and as each weekly meeting came to an end, the memberships were wished the best for the coming week and to look for opportunities where Woden Rotary could serve humanity. Club Survey To enable all members to have an up-to-date understanding of how our club operates, a survey of the membership was held. A club survey was held early in 2016/17, with questions covering a range of topics, covering our regular meeting, the operation of the club board, using technology, through to service projects and attending conferences. The results of the survey were shared with members resulting in the club being able to move forward as a united team. Service The members of the Woden Rotary Club have involved themselves in numerous fundraising activities this year. Whilst it is difficult to maintain an accurate running total of service hours it is clear Woden Rotary has amassed in excess of 1000 service hours during the 2016/17 Rotary Year with involvement in: Parking at Thoroughbred Park for the Melbourne Cup and the Black Opal, the 5 Peaks Bike Ride and the Virtual Race Meeting held with the assistance of the Hellenic Club. Parking at Thoroughbred Park has been one of Woden Rotary Club s service projects for many years. In the past, Gary Scott liaised with Thoroughbred Park and under his stewardship this project established itself and continued to generate considerable funds. The 5 Peaks Bike Ride has also been an integral part of the Woden Rotary Club s fund generation. Thank you goes to both John Widdup and Jeff Ibbotson, whose passion for cycling, has maintained a strong commitment to this positive lifestyle project. Community support with volunteers from other organisations such as Inner Wheel, Sailability and Peddle Power ensured this programs continued success. The Virtual Race Meeting was a new fundraising initiative to raise funds for our local community enabling us to purchase a Trishaw electric-assisted bike. The Trishaw Bike will allow the Cycling Without Age program to be implemented at Araluen Retirement Village in Fisher. This program will enable residents to venture out of the village and enjoy an assisted cycle ride in their neighbourhood. The driving force behind this program was again a team effort involving John Widdup and Jeff Ibbotson. Page 3 of 4
4 Community Achievements New Generations Rotary Youth Exchange is for students in secondary school and has been operating since This year, Deborah and Peter Schultz, opened their home to host Fabian Golla from Germany. When Fabian recently addressed the club, you could see the change, from the shy Year 11 student upon arrival to the mature and thoughtful young man he is today. 2016/17 has seen the initiation of the Woden Rotary Club - Robert Harvie Memorial Bursary. Robert (affectionately known as Bob) passed away in mid His widow Helen presented the Club with a substantial cheque to be used in Bob's memory to 'help young people'. Each year the recipient of the Bursary will be chosen from the year 10 students attending Melrose High School who will be continuing their education at Canberra College the following year. Rotary Adventure in Citizenship is a shared Youth program in partnership with the Canberra Rotary Club. This year, the program was coordinated by Woden Rotary Club being chaired by Deb Whitfield. Twenty-Five Year 11 student came together here in Canberra during Budget Week. Membership The current membership of the club stands at 20. During the year we have seen two very experienced and committed members leave Canberra. The club bid Gary Scott and Mike Rodd farewell as they relocated to Sydney and Melbourne respectively. Need I say Membership will be a high priority moving forward. Donations Funds raised through projects including Parking at Thoroughbred Park, The Virtual Race Meeting and The 5 Peaks Bike Ride totalled in excess of $22,000. During the year, the Woden Club donated funds to various causes including: Rotary International Foundation, Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, Shelter Box and numerous local causes including Araluen Retirement Village, Inner Wheel, Canberra Rotary to sponsor children with disabilities to attend Circus Quirkus. In early 2017, the late George Klim and his son Ed, donated funds to Woden Rotary Club. The Club together with funds raised from other fundraising activities, purchased and donated a new sail boat to Sailability for use by people with disabilities learning to sail. Additionally, the club has made a considerable financial commitment to support MyHome in Canberra. During the latter part of the 2016/17 Rotary Year, a neighbouring rotary club, Canberra South Rotary Club, found themselves in a position where the club was not viable and their board decided to hand their Charter back to District Governor, Steve Hill. Many of the South Canberra Club programs will continue into the future, as some of the members have joined other clubs and will take with them these programs. Woden Rotary Club has assisted by purchasing the South Canberra Barbeque Trailer. Whilst the chapter on South Canberra Rotary closes, a new opportunity arises for the Woden Rotary Club to assist local organisations with our catering skills. Finally, Past President Deb Whitfield, Secretary John Widdup and Treasurer Lyn Svanosio have been a tower of support to me during the year. A special thank you to all 3 of you. Also, from behind the scenes we have some members and honorary members who continue to serve the club in particular I refer to Noel Hart, Des Pain and the tireless duo of Ken Goard and Ros Osbourne, a big thank you from me and the Woden Rotary Club.
