Having great people around you in your workplace can be a rare thing. I can count on my fingers the people that I have really loved to work with over the years. But the people that we will meet on Thursday clearly pay attention to how to be that person, rather than who those people are around them. 2 Last Weeks Meeting Our own John Taylor entertained us this week with his fine illustrated description of his voyage on the square-rigger Europa to Antarctica early last year. Originally built as a German Light-house vessel, she was converted in the 1960 s by the Dutch and now sails the world as a specialist tourist vessel. John and two friends boarded the ship in Ushuaia, on the island of Tierra del Fuego in southern Chile, before sailing down the Beagle Channel, where they met four days of rough and stormy weather. With only a small engine, the ship mainly used its sails in open water and all the 45 passengers helped the 15 crew sail. The ship visited many places during the two week trip, including the South Shetland Islands, Deception Island and several working and abandoned research stations. John produced wonderful photographs of the voyage showing vividly the scenery, wildlife and the daily activities on board. A particularly striking photo was of twenty passengers lying in the shallow water on a beach in Deception Island which, because of its volcanic past, still warms the shallow water s edge. A once in a life-time trip, which John explained, exceeded his expectations: perhaps not suited to the faint -hearted or the squeamish but a wonderful story for your grand-children (or anyone else close enough to hear). The story of the young English passenger who was sea-sick for the first four days but at the end of the trip signed on as a cook, was an example of how the majesty of the Antarctic can lure you. 5 Humour by Geoff Prichard The Navy Wine Taster At a wine merchant's warehouse the regular taster died, and the director started looking for a new one to hire. A retired Chief Petty Officer, drunk and with a ragged dirty look, came to apply for the position. The director wondered how to send him away. They gave him a glass of wine to taste. The old Chief tried it and said, "It's a Muscat three years old, grown on a north slope, matured in steel containers. Low grade but acceptable." "That's correct," said the boss. "Another glass, please." "It's a cabernet, eight years old, south-western slope, oak barrels, matured at eight degrees. Requires three more years for finest results." "Absolutely correct. Now a third glass." ''It's a pinot blanc champagne, high grade and exclusive,'' calmly said the drunk. The director was astonished and winked at his secretary to suggest something She left the room and came back in with a glass of urine. The old Navy Chief tried it. "It's a blonde, 26 years old, three months pregnant, and if I don't get the job, I'll name the father." Page 5
