2 Local A2 Sciece Ceter cruises offer uique way to see the beauty of Squam Lake BY DONNA RHODES Staff Writer HOLDERNESS It may be a little too chilly for swimmig i the fall, but there are still plety of ways to ejoy the Lakes Regio, such as the Squam Lakes Natural Sciece Ceter cruises that allow visitors to explore the beauty ad ature of the lake. Besides the Explore Squam cruise that tours people betwee the islads ad alog the shorelie of the sceic body of water, there is also the Nature of the Lake cruise led by aturalist Margaret Gillespie. Gillespie has bee with Squam Lakes Natural Sciece Ceter for 28 years, ad is well-acquaited with the loos ad eagles who call the lake home. Settig out for oe of her ature cruises, each perso is give a set of bioculars. As they help sca the water i hopes of spottig oe of the beautiful black ad white birds, Gillespie also educates her guests about the loos habits ad physical features. Last week, it was t log before a adult ad youg loo were spotted i waters off oe islad but their proximity to some rocks made it difficult for everyoe to get a good look. With a stiff wid blowig, Gillespie steered for more secluded coves where loos ofte fid quieter waters to fish. As she expected, a older loo chick, hatched early i the summer, was foud divig i oe such cove. Keep a eye out whe they go uder ad you ll see them pop up somewhere earby i just a miute or so, she advised. True to her word, the chick soo surfaced earby givig everyoe a good look at its markigs. Aother iterestig fact she shared is that a family of two adults ad two chicks ca cosume up to 900 pouds of fish i a seaso, diig o warm water fish like bass ad perch. Some of the adult loos see last week were begiig to show sigs of witer plumage ad i a few moths, Gillespie said, they would head for ope waters whe the lake begis to freeze. Mediatio is a alterative to court, ad my family law practice helps people settle their differeces ad move o with their lives, said Schwartzberg. Whe people come to me for a divorce or ay other family matter, they create their ow agreemets that are the simply set o to the court for approval. While she oted that the courts i New Hampshire do a fie job, judges are ot able to sped time lookig at all the special uaces of each family law case before them. Through her services, everythig is settled betwee the parties ivolved, ad ofte, divorced couples lear to get alog with each other oce more, eve if they have t spoke for moths prior to comig to her office. Oce you go to court, your relatioship with your spouse is forever damaged, Schwartzberg said. You ca t take back the awful thigs that are said i a court room, ad there s o eed of that. Schwartzberg offers two processes that families ca choose from, the first beig Mediatio ad the secod beig Collaborative Law. Through mediatio, she guides couples as they makes decisios o how to divide their assets ad other possessios. Collaborative Law goes oe step further, requirig them to sig a documet statig they agree ot to go to court with the curret attoreys they ve hired, should they iclude oe i the process. Couples ca brig their ow lawyers with them whe they come to my office. Through collaborative law, though, they would have to hire aother attorey ad start the process all over if they chage their mid ad opt to go to court. It helps them work harder to reach a agreemet, she said. Ad i the ed, they are always glad they did. Whether a couple chooses mediatio or collaborative law, they lear to work together agai ad that, Schwartzberg said, is especially beeficial if they will be co-paretig childre. They lear how to talk to each other i a respectful way, ad that establishes a patter for the future. They ca feel comfortable attedig graduatios, weddigs ad other special gatherigs for their childre without the hurt ad ager they might otherwise have, she said. Schwartzberg is a graduate of the Vermot Law School, ad holds a Master s degree i couselig. She is licesed to practice i New Hampshire, New York, ad New Mexico, ad has served exclusively as a family law attorey for 30 years. This past July, Schwartzberg made the decisio to merge her offices i Cocord ad Piermot ad move her etire practice to Plymouth s ew Eterprise Ceter at Oe Bridge Street. May cliets from those two offices cotiue to travel to her Plymouth office but the added bous is that she is ow able to help more families i the North Coutry as well. I m the oly oe i my field this far orth, ad it brigs people a better ad less expesive alterative to court. I m really glad I ca reach out to help more people ow, she said. Schwartzberg is also reachig out to help other attoreys i rural areas of the state. For two years she served a the presidet of the Grafto Couty Bar Associatio ad she was also elected as the Grafto Couty represetative to the Board of Goverors for the New Hampshire Bar Associatio. Her role as represetative is to develop programs that will ehace the ability of attoreys i the orther part of the state to have successful practices with the same level of competecies available to attoreys i metropolita areas. I ve bee workig with the presidet of the New Hampshire Bar Associatio o those programs ad o ways i which we ca brig more of the Bar s resources to the North Coutry attoreys, she said. I was pleasatly surprised with the proposed revisios to the SEC, which icluded revisig the committee makeup, fudig the committee, addig a staff admiistrator ad requirig that sitig guidelie be developed. Whe SB245 added the requiremet that two members of the public, appoited by the Goveror, be added to the SEC so that there would be greater public ivolvemet of those who ultimately will live with the decisios of the SEC, I was hopeful that New Hampshire was actually goig to put i place a fair evaluatio process. Call or check To the Editor: Idustrial wid developers are accustomed to problem eighbors who wish to keep towerig turbies out of their backyards. Wid promoters have, ad will cotiue to mischaracterize our commuity as fear mogers ad NIMBY s whe i fact, our commuity is the exact opposite - we ve embraced five reewable power plats to date. Oh, do t forget, Norther Pass will be cuttig though our commuity as well. Ca oe commuity support ie eergy facilities withi a 15-mile radius? What will that look like? How will that impact our commuity? Why are ski resorts ot iterested i year roud wid reveues? Why do t schools, prisos or state lads have wid turbies? Developers are accustomed to oppoets ot beig very ifluetial - rather they see oppoets as oly capable of stirrig up local oppositio based o fears ad lies. Our commuity does ot fit that profile. We cotiue to ask importat questios... with o aswers. It is rumored that developers fear our commuity oppositio so much - they ve lobbied harder with Gov. Maggie Hassa. Last week, Gov. Hassa omiated Se. Bob Odell ad State Rep. Amada Merrill to sit o the first public committee i charge of permittig Norther Pass ad ay future wid farms projects i the state. These two omiatios tell me that our commuity has bee eormously successful. It was our grassroots commuity focus. It was our aggressively uified commuity voice. It was our commuity fudraisers ad pot luck diers. It was our votig record. That s what stopped additioal wid developmet i our commuity. Our commuity is full of self-proclaimed evirometalist, ad we re all workig hard to protect our local eviromet. Developers are clearly targetig our ridge-lies, ad we all kow there s o recreatig our forests i our lifetime. We are simple folk. We kow right from wrog ad we kow where the power is destied - souther states. Simply put - developers should have just aouced from the begiig that they are goig to destroy out ladscapes, erect oe hudred 500-foot turbies ad charge us to coect ad ship this electricity to souther states. Why are souther states outsourcig their reewable eergy tax credits? A ew questio rumblig i our foothills: How ca a U.S. Seator be appoited to a public committee before officially retirig from his Seate seat? Will Se. Bob Odell resig his from his Seate seat prior to his October 1st appoitmet? Or ca he hold two seats at the same time? Two paid seats? With the icreased umber of reewable eergy projects proposed for New Hampshire i the comig years, the SEC fids itself stretched ad we see the eed for appoitig a fair ad balaced public committee. But, there s a chill i the air ad it has othig to do with the temperature outside. There s a chill o our lad values, a chill o our home sales ad a chill up ad dow the spies of New Hampshire residets as they cosider if ayoe is lookig out for them. Are we beig represeted? Or shafted? Ray Cuigham Bridgewater Executive Coucil is Se. Bob Odell, formerly of Lempster. Odell will fairly represet the public iterest i the sitig of wid farms is ludicrous. So ow we kow that the SEC revisio process was really a charade. We put lipstick o the pig, but it s still a pig. Oly ow, whe the SEC approves a wid farm o New Hampshire s moutai ridges destroyig their sceic beauty ad drivig tourists to Maie ad Vermot, so that Coecticut ad Massachusetts ca beefit from New Hampshire s excess electrical power, they ca say we got public iput before we approved the project. 11 Arts & Etertaimet A11 Origial silet film versio of Chicago to scree Thursday, Oct. 9 at Flyig Mokey Popular jazz-age melodrama, log thought lost but recetly rediscovered, to be show o the big scree with live music PLYMOUTH Log before it became a log-ruig Broadway musical ad the 2002 s wier of the Academy Award for Best Picture, the story of Chicago first achieved worldwide fame as hit silet film. Noted for its cyical humor ad adult themes, early movie-goers loved how the origial Chicago captured the aythig-goes flavor of the jazz age at its height. See for yourself whe the origial 1927 scree versio of Chicago is screeed at the Flyig Mokey Moviehouse Courtesy Phyllis Haver stars as Roxie Hart i the silet film versio of Chicago (1927), to be screeed with live music by Jeff Rapsis o Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Flyig Mokey Moviehouse ad Performace Ceter, 39 South Mai St., Plymouth; Admissio $10. For more iformatio, visit ad Performace Ceter o Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. The program, the latest i the theater s silet film series, will be accompaied by live music performed by silet film composer Jeff Rapsis. Admissio is $10 per perso. Chicago tells the jazz age story of gold digger Roxie Hart, a youg wife who gus dow her older lover ad is the put o trial for murder. With Roxie represeted by a publicity-hugry lawyer, ad with prosecutio i the hads of a ambitious district attorey, the courtroom drama hits the spotlight ad scadalizes the coutry as the atio awaits a aswer to the questio: Is she iocet, or headed for the slammer? The silet film versio of Chicago, based o a hit 1926 stage play, was for may years thought to be oe of the may silet films that were completely lost, with o copies survivig i ay archive. But i 2006, a pristie origial prit of the film was discovered i the archives of icoic director Cecil B. DeMille, who supervised its productio. DeMille persoally supervised the shootig of Chicago, but refused to take directorial credit for the lurid melodrama because its message clashed severely with DeMille s high-mided Biblical epic Kig of Kigs, the playig i theaters. The film stars vetera actors Phyllis Haver as Roxie Hart; Victor Varcoi as her log-sufferig husbad; Eugee Pallette as her lover; ad Robert Edeso as the lawyer who takes o Roxie s case. Directig credit was give to Frak Urso. League of NH Craftsme Gallery hostig eedle felted wool pumpki class MEREDITH Joi us at the League of New Hampshire Craftsme Meredith Fie Craft Gallery o Suday, Oct. 5 from 1 4 p.m. for a Needle Felted Wool Pumpki class with Caroly Wright. To pre-register visit the League of New Hampshire Craftsme o 279 DW Highway, Meredith, or call at The resurfacig of the origial scree versio of Chicago after eight decades was regarded as a major ciematic rediscovery. I reviewig the film, critic Jamie S. Rich of called it a melodrama that remais fu to watch eve 80 years later. It s more tha a historical curio or a atiquated prototype for its more famous descedet; DeMille s productio is stylishly ambitious ad smartly costructed. This looselimbed crime story is evidece of just how assured ciema had become prior to the advet of soud. Other critics sigled out the performace of Phyllis Haver as the film s highlight. Chicago impresses by its moder sesibility; its o-holds-barred look at love, lust, law, social mores, ad the media; ad especially by its delightfully amoral heroie, played to perfectio by former Mack Seett Bathig Beauty Phyllis Haver, wrote Adre Soares of the Alterative Film Guide. All i all, i spite of the moralistic edig Chicago holds up remarkably well as a jaded (or perhaps just plai lucid) take o sex ad power i America society, dealig with issues that are as relevat today as they were yesteryear, Soares wrote. The story was used agai i Roxie (1942), a Hollywood remake starrig Giger Rogers, before beig reshaped ito Chicago, the hit 1975 musical by Joh Kader ad Fred Ebb. A Broadway revival that opeed i 1996 is still ruig, ad was the basis for a star-studded film versio featurig Catherie Zeta-Joes, Reee Zellweger ad Richard Gere that wo the 2002 Academy Award for Best Picture. I revivig the origial Chicago, the Flyig Mokey aims to show silet movies as they were meat to be see i high quality prits, o a large scree, with live music, ad with a audiece. All those elemets are importat parts of the silet film experiece, said Jeff Rapsis, who will improvise a musical score durig the screeig. Recreate those coditios, ad the classics of early ciema leap back to life. They all featured great stories with compellig characters ad uiversal appeal, so it s o surprise that they hold up ad we still respod to them. Rapsis performs o a digital sythesizer that reproduces the texture of the full orchestra ad creates a traditioal movie score soud. Church FROM PAGE A10 thex. 14 The Rest of the Story A14 Parkig FROM PAGE A1 whether the parkig should be chaged. Oce the report is complete, they will schedule a meetig with the Bristol selectme to discuss the fidigs. Highway Egieer William Rose, who is with the DOT s Commuity Assistace Bureau, reportedly told selectme that, util someoe ca demostrate that the parkig is less safe, he would ot wat to chage it. Izard credited the DOT with beig proactive i its decisio to cotract with the LRPC for the study. It s a good example of the DOT showig cocer, he said. It s a opportuity that does t come up very ofte, whe job costructio issues are raised by the DOT after a project is completed. They reached out to the plaig commissio to assess how well the ew traffic patter was workig. Shaw Ecoomides, the brach maager of North Coutry Mortgage, o the corer of Pleasat ad South Mai streets, is coviced it is ot workig. People have t gotte used to it, he said. They re detig their cars ad bedig the sigs they hit whe tryig to back ito the parkig spaces. I support of his positio, Ecoomides has set photographs ad YouTube video liks to local ad state officials. The videos show the difficulty people have tryig to park withi the paited lies while traffic attempts to get past them. I would expect that it might be particularly challegig for older drivers who frequetly have problems due to the mobility of their eck because of arthritis, Sweeey commeted. That said, I suppose oe could argue that it is easier to drive out ito the traffic flow tha to back out, because you have a full view i both directios. However, the backig i could be particularly challegig, especially at certai times of the day, due to the presece of pedestrias ad childre o bicycles. May of today s passeger cars have particularly poor visibility to the rear, which is the reaso that may offer backup cameras as stadard or optioal equipmet. Ecoomides said he tried twice to park the right way oe day ad, both times, he had aother car right behid him, so he circled the UPCOMING FREE INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOPS: Wilder (W. He said he fially gave up ad pulled straight i ad subsequetly had a visit from a Bristol police officer. After ie moths of costructio, which hurt our busiess, ow we re havig people say they wo t stop i because the parkig is such a problem, said Ecoomides. Aletha Lewis of Ti Shoppe Atiques agreed. People sit i the road ad look aroud ad fially drive off, she said. If they ca park elsewhere, they will, but they wo t park or are very ervous about tryig to park i frot of the store. Someoe is always hittig the hadicapped sig. The busiess owers say they have see people cut their wheels sharply to pull forward ito the reverse-slated parkig spaces, rather tha backig i. Whe they go to leave, they are facig the wrog way ad some of them drive away i the wrog lae. The merchats also say they have see drivers turig the corer from Pleasat Street ecouter someoe tryig to back ito a parkig space, ad they get agry, soudig their hors or shoutig obsceities at the driver who is parkig. There have bee several ear-collisios, they say. I m afraid someoe from out of tow who is t familiar with the parkig will be comig aroud that corer ad will hit someoe, said Lewis. Is that what it s goig to take? Tow Admiistrator Michael Capoe said drivers backig ito traffic also pose a safety hazard. With head-out parkig, he said, people are able to see the vehicles approachig from the rear. Additioally, the ew parkig cofiguratios make it safer to load purchases ito the back of a hatchback or SUV because the loadig would be from the sidewalk, rather tha from the street. As for passegers, they ow exit toward the sidewalk, rather tha havig to go aroud the ope car door. Witer sports are comig soo as well ad coaches ad referees for basketball are beig sought to ru cout i the sprig, ad also looked at the summer traffic volume, speed, whether pedestrias were safe, how much the traffic was queuig, etc. Icluded i the study was a traffic sigal warrat study Bristol residets have argued for years that there should be a traffic sigal i the Square, but the state has always said a sigal there was uecessary. Capoe oted that the tow cotrols North Mai Street ad the souther ed of the square, but the state has authority over Route 104 ad Route 3-A which itersect dowtow. Capoe also oted that federal moey was ivolved i the dowtow project ad he said chages i the parkig cofiguratio might affect that fudig. Izard said that, from their observatios, the LRPC has foud traffic to be flowig through the dowtow area effectively. As part of their study, the plaers reviewed a 24-hour video provided by the tow from a camera set up overlookig the recofigured square at midweek. Izard said they determied that would be the best time to record the traffic, based o the auto traffic couters ad peak traffic studies. Ecoomides commeted, To me, it s ridiculous to rate the safety of this parkig o a camera utilized for a mere 24 hours. He added that studets from Sat Bai School, who meet the bus dowtow, fid the parkig cofusig. The studets have stated to me their stress ad frustratio, eve poitig out they recetly completed driver s educatio, ad owhere was this [type of] parkig ever taught or described to them, he said. By circulatig his photographs ad video liks, Ecoomides is hopig to fid someoe who will step i ad say the back-i parkig is ot workig.
