They also share some of the current challenges they face in their application. Dr Pragati Gautama who experienced first-hand the Christchurch Earthquake from within the Hotel Grand Chancellor on the 22nd February and rallied with the other medical professionals in the immediate medical provision for those trapped in the CTV building. Alpine Fault Resilience Fund Project (AF8) It is highly likely that an Alpine Fault event will happen in the lifetime of today s population. The impact on the South Island and the national economy will be significant and we must provide strategic thinking and a coordinated effort to plan for this event. This project brings science and emergency management planning together to identify consequences of a large Alpine Fault earthquake for all CDEM groups in the South Island and identify coordinated initial response actions for CDEM groups. Dr Caroline Orchiston who as part of a team of researchers is engaged in a new programme of work called Rural Resilient Backbone. This project is focused on resilience in rural communities as part of a National Science Challenge called Resilience to Nature s Challenges specifically aimed to build resilience to natural hazards in NZ.

3 Chris Hawker Regional Manager and Group Controller for Emergency Management Otago will be acting as our MC for the conference. We will be hearing from the Ministry of Civil Defence of the latest public education campaigns, risk assessment, online learning and the online emergency management information system.
