1.0 Message frm the Chair At the last Annual General Meeting, I felt privileged and pleased t have been appinted Chair fr the Centre fr Vlunteering. Firstly, I want t thank Jy Wdhuse fr her wnderful leadership as the previus Chair, and am pleased that she has agreed t remain n the Bard fr a while. I am happy t reprt that the Centre has had a gd year. By this I mean nt just financially, but by ur scial impact and the increasing numbers we have assisted either int vlunteering r int wrk via their vlunteering experience. Vlunteering plays an imprtant part in the Australian cmmunity with abut 40% f the ppulatin being invlved ne way r anther. Many peple think f vlunteers as well-meaning lder peple, but in fact mst vlunteers are still in paid emplyment. The scene is changing and the challenge is t start selling vlunteering as a way f changing peple s lives fr the better whilst advantaging urselves persnally by develping leadership, mentring, self-cnfidence and adaptability skills. Crprate vlunteering has experienced huge grwth, and the Centre has received many requests frm the sectr t help give their staff the pprtunity t lend their expertise t nt-frprfit grups. These rganisatins cnsider vlunteering a part f their crprate scial respnsibility, and understand that staff gain satisfactin frm being invlved (which in turn results in imprved staff retentin rates and generally a mre cntented wrkfrce). The Centre cntinues t value several relatinships within the sectr including the netwrk f vlunteer centres acrss the State, the NSW Office fr Vlunteering, the Office f the Minister fr Citizenship, the Hn. Victr Dminell, and the CEO Netwrk f State peak vlunteering bdies (CEON). These relatinships ensure that the fcus n vlunteering is always at the frefrnt f ur business and ur purpse. The Centre has als strengthened its relatinship with yuth. Yu may recall that gvernment funding fr the Schls and Cmmunity Invlvement Prgram (SCIP) was withdrawn after 30 years, but the Centre made a decisin t cntinue its wrk in this area. Prmting the benefits f vlunteering t yuth is imprtant and many educatinal facilities such as schls and universities are becming increasingly invlved, and are ffering frmal recgnitin t yung peple wh participate in vlunteering. Such invlvement can help yung peple t develp the "sft skills", and jb seekers in particular, can clearly benefit. Research indicates that emplyers are psitively influenced by a yung persn's invlvement in a vlunteering prgram. The Centre, thrugh its Research, Develpment and Plicy unit, has develped a range f initiatives with University f Technlgy (UTS) and the University f Western Sydney (UWS) fr prgrams encuraging yuth invlvement in vlunteering. In June 2013, the Centre hsted anther very successful ne day Ignite Vlunteering Cnference which was well attended, and prvided a full day f training fr vlunteer managers acrss NSW. The brad range f expert speakers has made the cnference a must g fr peple invlved in the vluntary sectr. The Centre fr Vlunteering Annual Reprt Page 2

The training arm f The Centre, The Schl f Vlunteer Management (as an RTO), thrugh its manager Mark Tippett, has develped a reputatin fr slid training and educatin in management with its certificate and diplma curses. The results are clear and have led t partnerships with varius levels f Gvernment, universities and secndary schls that encurage cmmunity interactin and leadership develpment thrugh vlunteer training and practice. The Vlunteer Referral Service cntinues t be a critical part f the Centre's wrk, and I ften hear cmpliments abut the effectiveness f this service. There are still challenges ahead. Amngst them is finding jbs fr the many vlunteers frm the crprate, yuth and university sectrs wh want t get invlved. One f ur gals is t persuade the nt-fr-prfit sectr, that many tasks which they feel they cannt perfrm (due t lack f resurces) can be undertaken by a variety f experts in the vlunteer chrt. Lynne Daltn has reprted t the Bard that she will resign early We will miss her. Lynne became CEO in very difficult times and she steered The Centre in the right directins, financially and strategically. We wish her all the very best and hpe that she will remain invlved in sme way in the future. Pht: Valerie Hgstad with Micheala Cllins, 2012 NSW Yuth Vlunteer f the Year fllwing annuncement f award recipients during the state ceremny in December Many thanks t the Bard which has supprted me in my first year. A special welcme t Terry Brigden, Lki Ball and Brendan Lynch wh jined the Bard during the year, and thanks t Lynne and her fabulus team f staff and vlunteers fr their nging invlvement in the Centre. Valerie Hgstad Chairpersn Vlunteering plays an imprtant part in the Australian cmmunity with abut 40% f the ppulatin being invlved ne way r anther The Centre fr Vlunteering Annual Reprt Page 3

2.0 Message frm the CEO The past financial year has been ne f increased expansin f ur partnerships arund vlunteering within the cmmunity, within the crprate sectr and within Gvernment. We have develped nging and innvative relatinships with Macquarie University, UWS, UTS, Cmmunity CPS (nw Beynd Bank), the NSW Gvernment, Cmmnwealth Bank f Australia, Natinal Australia Bank, The Sydney Mrning Herald and an ever grwing number f crpratins. These partnerships will all wrk twards enhancing the vlunteering sectr thrugh the creatin f many vlunteer pprtunities. ClubsNSW has cme n bard as a dedicated spnsr f the NSW Vlunteer f the Year Award, and cntinues t ffer its expert advice and staff resurces t ensure that the Award prgram fcuses n acknwledging the invaluable cntributin the vlunteers make including the 50,000 vlunteers in the club industry alne. I am extremely grateful t Anne Fitzgerald, Executive Manager, Member Services & Marketing at ClubsNSW fr her cmmitment t the vlunteering cause. Thanks are als due t Maria Peña, Cmmunity Partnerships Executive at ClubsNSW. We were als very lucky t have intrduced t us a persn wh has becme a majr asset t The Centre thrugh her amazing zest fr the vluntary sectr. I speak f nne ther than Paula Duncan AM, wh has becme a staunch ally and friend f The Centre and wh last year accepted the rle f NSW Vlunteer f the Year Award Ambassadr. This year the Bard f The Centre ffered Paula the psitin f Ambassadr n an nging basis because f her cmmitment and dedicatin t the rle. Paula brings a wealth f understanding abut cmmunity engagement and prmtin frm which we have benefitted greatly in the shrt time she has been with us. I cntinue t be amazed at the dedicatin f The Centre s vlunteers. Many have been cming t The Centre fr decades, thrugh three relcatins, a few CEO changes and many staff changes yet they turn up day after day, week after week, year after year fulfilling ur need fr reliability and prfessinalism in their vlunteer rles. Sme even g away and cme back! As mentined in my reprt last year, I was pleased that the Minister fr Citizenship, Hn Victr Dminell, cmmitted the Gvernment t cnsulting with the cmmunity n the issue f vlunteer rights which resulted in a rbust prgram f meetings, and frums with an expert grup and the brader cmmunity regarding the cncerns raised by many vlunteers. The utcme was the adptin f a charter f principles which was endrsed by the Gvernment with an invitatin t rganisatins t sign up t the principles built n the three bjectives f respect, dignity and fairness fr vlunteers. I encurage rganisatins including gvernment agencies t sign up t, and apply, these principles in their everyday vlunteer management practices. The Centre fr Vlunteering Annual Reprt Page 4

Yet while these principles have been develped and prmted, I am still taking weekly calls frm vlunteers all ver the state wh have experienced frustratin, anger and even grief as a result f inapprpriate behaviur f managers and/r supervisrs. While I acknwledge that vlunteers themselves can smetimes cause disruptin, the rganisatin has the apprpriate management rights and pwer t deal with such behaviur in an apprpriate way. Vlunteers, hwever, have n structure, system r prtectin when it cmes t their rights and wellbeing. Of curse I culd nt cmplete an annual reprt withut mentining the Bard, vlunteers and staff, wh are all vital fr the rganisatin t functin effectively. The peple I have arund me are ne f the reasns I have jurneyed fr ver seven years frm Bwral t the City every day - a jurney f almst six hurs daily. There is never a day when I dn t want t cme t wrk and meet with my staff and vlunteers. The Bard als ffers me the supprt and friendship that makes my daily jurney wrthwhile. Our lng time chairpersn, Jy Wdhuse, retired frm the Chair at the last AGM due t her relcatin t Suth Australia, but has agreed t cntinue n the Bard fr the freseeable future. Her effrts have been a huge help twards the seamless transitin t ur new Chair, Valerie Hgstad. Pht (left t right): Paula Duncan, Bruce Venables, Judy Nunn and Lynne Daltn appearing n Weekend Sunrise n Channel 7, n 2 March This is my last reprt as CEO f The Centre fr Vlunteering as I have advised the Bard that I am intending t finish in my rle n 31 March While sme may think it a lng way ff, I believe that a substantial lead time will enable the Bard t implement a successin prgram in a cnsidered and methdical way. It is difficult t let g f a jb which enables me t wrk with a uniquely prfessinal, dedicated and supprtive bard, and a grup f peple I cnsider my friends and wh als happen t be the staff and vlunteers in the rganisatin. Hwever it is time t inject new vitality int the rganisatin thrugh the energy f smene with a different backgrund, different experiences and new ideas. I d hpe after a brief perid, in which t vercme the inevitable withdrawal symptms, that I will still be invlved with The Centre in sme way. Kindest regards t all and many thanks t everyne fr supprting and valuing the wrk f The Centre ver the years. Lynne Daltn CEO The Centre fr Vlunteering Annual Reprt Page 5

3.0 Vlunteer Referral Service The Vlunteer Referral Service (VRS) cntinues t be a busy department in The Centre fr Vlunteering. Each week, sme 35 vlunteers devte their time t ensure the smth running f this service. These vlunteers answer enquiries and make appintments fr vlunteers t be interviewed; prcess expressins f interest received and respnd t them; interview vlunteers and prvide them with advice and guidance t help secure vlunteer rles. Vlunteers als liaise with ur members, entering new rles nt ur database and listing these pprtunities n the varius websites we use t prmte them. Figures shw that we assist 700+ members f the public each mnth, ften thrugh respnding t s and prviding infrmatin regarding ur service, and f thse we refer vlunteers t suitable pprtunities within the cmmunity. The VRS has a wide range f rles frm the highly skilled thrugh FIDO, t thse that require n previus experience. Rles vary frm ne-ff special event vlunteering t an n-ging 16 hurs per week. The FIDO website, e-newsletter and newspaper clumn (in The Sydney Mrning Herald) cntinues t prmte skilled vlunteering rles and acts as a cnduit between skilled vlunteers and NFP rganisatins. Many thanks t Denis Prter, wh vlunteers each week as a Liaisn Officer t prcess and pst ur FIDO rles. We are als very grateful t The Sydney Mrning Herald fr dnating space fr the weekly FIDO clumns. Achievements As their supervisr, I am respnsible fr the n-ging training and supprt f these vlunteers, many f whm have been with us fr ver 10 years, and a few fr clse t 20 years. During the year we have said gdbye t five f ur vlunteers and recruited new vlunteers t take their place and embarked n crss training vlunteers t help the teams better manage when vlunteers are absent. I als prmte the VRS t ptential members and prvide new members with infrmatin n hw t make the best use f the service. As a part-time emplyee, I am extremely grateful t Wendy Chin, ur Membership Services Crdinatr, wh supprts the vlunteers in the VRS n the days I dn t wrk. I knw the teams are extremely appreciative f her supprt. 8 We have als made a cncerted effrt t identify rles suitable fr yuth vlunteering in rder t prmte them n ur yuth website and thrugh scial media. The VRS wrks clsely with ur Yuth and Cmmunity Develpment staff t ensure that yung peple cming thrugh the VRS are well taken care f. T this end, Jacinthe Brsseau and her team are able t schedule interviews tw days per week between 3 5pm t accmmdate schl students. Challenges The challenge we face cntinues t be a mismatch between supply and demand fr vlunteer rles. Administrative rles are ppular especially with internatinal students, hwever, we have a predminance f welfare/aged care rles. The VRS has seen an increasing number f peple wh have disabilities referred by casewrkers as a pathway t emplyment. Fr us t be able t find suitable vlunteer wrk fr these vlunteers, we will depend largely n the rganisatin s ability and willingness t engage with disabled peple, and it will becme mre imprtant in cming mnths t seek ut rganisatins wh are prgressive in this regard s we can refer with cnfidence. The rle f the VRS is t bring vlunteers, nt-fr-prfit rganisatins and Gvernment agencies tgether fr a mutually beneficial assciatin, and t enrich the cmmunity and the lives f the individual vlunteers. 9 4.0 Member Services Member Services renewed its fcus in the financial year after the appintment f a new Membership Services Crdinatr at the end f September The main bjective was t crdinate effective and efficient engagement with members, with the main respnsibilities including: Crdinatin f nging supprt and service t members ensuring best practice engagement and supprt fr members Review and refinement f referral membership prcesses ensuring reprts, plicies and prcedures are up-t-date and in practice Secure integratin f member services, including cnsistent messages, shared prmtin, planning and timely respnse t requests fr advice r supprt. Based n this, Member Services has been able t develp a better articulatin and cmmunicatin f their purpse and directin t current members, internal and external stakehlders and ptential members. A new membership engagement plan has been created that fcused initially n cntacting all ur existing members t either build a new relatinship r t build a better relatinship. By the end f the financial year, all nt-fr-prfit members had been cntacted either by phne r . The aim was t share a cnsistent message with all ur members abut the benefits and services they were entitled t as members f The Centre, and develp clser relatinships with ur member base. The cmpletin f this initial stage f the Membership engagement plan has helped t ensure a smther, mre efficient, membership renewal prcess. Additinal imprvements will be made t the renewal prcess in the cming year. Member Services this financial year created a Member Services sub-cmmittee n the bard which has develped a strategic plan. This is the basis n which Member Services is building its future plans, and will lk at future member benefits and services. I wuld like t acknwledge the supprt f wnderful vlunteers, Brendan Lynch (Bard Member), Christine Bassiri and internatinal student intern, Sihan Ga, fr their dedicatin and cmmitment in supprting Member Services. This team has been rejuvenating the Crprate Vlunteering Prgram and its internal prcesses t match the increasing demand frm varius rganisatins that want t fulfill their Crprate Scial Respnsibility (CSR) prgrams and/r t initiate a CSR prgram. We have als assisted American University students t fulfill their cmpulsry vluntary prgram requirements fr their studies. In March 2013, the Cmmnwealth Bank f Australia (CBA) became a crprate partner with a new Crprate Vlunteering prgram t ffer mre pprtunities t its staff. This has created a great pprtunity fr CBA s CSR prgram, ur nt-fr-prfit members and vlunteering in NSW. We welcme CBA s input n CSR develpments and fr having the visin t partner with The Centre t find the right pprtunities fr its staff and assist the cmmunity thrugh ur netwrk f nt-fr-prfit cnnectins. We have rganised Crprate Vlunteering Days fr their staff, such as the makever f an adlescent accmmdatin facility, and participatin in a Special Olympics sprts day. We kicked ff ur new CBA partnership with a Crprate Vlunteering Breakfast in May t celebrate Natinal Vlunteer Week. CBA presented its existing vlunteering prgram t a netwrk f CSR managers. The aim was fr the crpratins t discuss their ideas and views n their Crprate Vlunteering prgrams in a relaxed atmsphere. Mre crprate breakfasts will be held quarterly thrughut the year at crprate hst venues. During Nvember and December 2012 there was the traditinal strng grwth with several cmpanies rganising events, including Experian and Westpac. In 2013, there was a significant increase in the number f crpratins wanting t bk an annual r six mnthly vlunteering prgrams t increase the CSR activities within their cmpany. In particular, we have frged relatinships with Real Insurance, Wise Educatin and Cca Cla Amatil. The prgrams range frm aged care, sprting events, makevers, scial welfare gardening and envirnmental activities. The team is wrking hard t assist ur nt-fr-prfit members t prmte their crprate vlunteering prgrams, assist with prgram ideas and create mre pprtunities t engage with crprate vlunteers and CSR prgrams. Of nte, we have been wrking with Ted Nffs t find skilled crprate vlunteer day pprtunities, and with Wesley Missin t create prmtinal material. The Centre wuld like t thank all the rganisatins that have utilised ur services this year and fr their cntributin t the cmmunity thrugh these prgrams. We wuld als like t say a big thank yu t ur many nt-fr-prfit members wh liaise with us t prvide these crprate vlunteering pprtunities. The Centre fr Vlunteering Annual Reprt Page 9

It was such a rewarding day. We did things like taking the dgs fr a walk, cleaning their kennels, feeding them treats and best f all had play time with them. It was great t g t this shelter as I nly knew abut the RSPCA befre and cuncil shelters like these aren t as recgnised and struggle with funding. We had a great time and I instantly fell in lve with sme f the dgs. It was sad t see hw sme f the animals have been treated befre ging there but the shelter takes great care f them and they shuld be cmmended highly fr that. Jennifer Hdges n behalf f the Real Insurance Team The Centre fr Vlunteering, thrugh these crprate vlunteer prgrams, acts as a cnduit between the business wrld and the nt-fr-prfit sectr.
